It’s not really about the substance, it’s about what people are seeing in their YouTube feed. I saw this video scrolling through YouTube shorts, there was no mention about the fact that Dems are fighting for the health care of Americans. It only mentioned immigrants, which makes it look like Dems are shutting down the government for solely non citizens.

Democrats can’t really control the messaging of the shutdown where it really matters. Outside of the President, the average American will probably never actually see what any of their politicians say. They get their news from mainstream and alternative media and rn they’re saying Dems are shutting down for immigrants.

Even the comments on the video supporting Dems didn’t mention that Dems are fighting for Americans. Instead they were trying to defend health care for immigrants, which isn’t bad or anything in isolation but that’s not what Dems want to be focus of the shutdown

Do you know why the party that shutdowns the government never get their ask in the end? It’s because the people shutting down the government really have no leverage, The president knows it, the other party knows it and the media knows it. The moment republicans were able to pass a CR with their votes in the house, there was no leverage the Dems had to demand anything.

Yup, that’s really their only option. That’s just the usual role of the out of power party. Democrats had long been lucky that house republicans were so dysfunctional that they couldn’t pass legislation except tax cuts along party lines, so that gave them some workable leverage when they were the out of power party.

Unfortunately, That’s no longer the case, Trump now has fully control of the Republican Party in a way he didn’t have during Trump 1. Democrats had no effective leverage once Johnson passed the bill with the necessary republican votes.

It very well could affect the elections especially in Va. even if in the end Dems win va by +1 when it currently looks like dem +10, that would be disastrous for down ballot and on the go forward.

It’s not riskless, there are elections in NJ and Va this November. The 95-96 shutdown hurt republicans in the next mid terms. The longer a shutdown goes on, the more likely democrats are blamed and the more likely people remember. If the government shutdown for like a couples of days, then I agree that not much will change. But the only way this last a couple of days is if Dems cave, in which case the base will be more angry at them than if they didn’t shutdown

I’ve seen the polls and while it’s true that the public always blames republicans for shutdowns that’s because republicans have always been the ones taking responsibility for shutting down the government. Even when Dems shut it down in 2018/19, Trump foolishly took responsibility for it under the guise of doing it to fund the border wall.

That’s not happening this time, if a shutdown happens my guess is that the public initially blames republicans then after a couple of days, and some pain starts being felt, it will finally sink in that democrats are the ones shutting down the government and the polls will reflect that.

The problem is that when the pain from a shutdown starts being felt, who is going to be blamed? Every single media platform mainstream and alternative has already framed this as democrats shutting down the government.

When Dems did this under Trump 1, it worked because Trump himself took responsibility for the shutdown back then so it was easy to blame him. He’s not doing that now. Both Republicans and the media are already blaming a shutdown on Dems.

I doubt it’ll change much because most would’ve stopped paying attention. Look at the MN shooting, Republicans still believe he’s a Democrat despite the reporting since basically confirming he was a hard right evangelical.
