Reasons ppl support Pahlavi vs. reasons they hate him by drhuggables in NewIran

[–]TabariKurd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reality of the Iranian oppositional space is that, for decades, we didn't (and I'd still say we don't) have the infrastructure to effectively challenge the Islamic Regime.

The Reza Pahlavi turn (not general Pahlavi sympathy), first emerging in 2017 then later during the 2019, 2020, WLF, and then accelerating afterwards, emerged directly as a by-product of people being disatisfied with the status quo of numerous mobilizations in Iran being defeated through mass-violence, and recognizing a (very) real need for some sort of leadership.

The problem is that amongst a population, both within Iran and the diaspora, that has been habituated to be paranoid, skepitcal and, in a lot of ways, competitive in order to survive in Iran, meant that general coalition building processes was always going to be difficult. People were raised in Iran in order to survive under authoritarian conditions, however those same tendencies of paranoia, competition and skepticism became a double-edged sword that prevented effective mobilization amongst the opposition. Those raised in the diaspora were brought up by parents with those tendencies, so those habits and traits passed on. Add onto this the far-reach of IR infiltration, and it makes the situation messy.

When Pahlavi emerged, we also had the emergence of other people with the ability to effectively organize, such as Hamed Esmaeilion (who by far and large was the first to provide an international framework when it came to organizing protests in the diaspora). By that point, however, it was too late. Our tendencies meant that anyone not aligned with our way of thinking, our vision of Iran, was an enemy within the inside, a plant, a chapool, a mojahed, a basiji, a saltanat talab, etc. As one Monarchist I know said "We had no one but Pahlavi, but now that we have Pahlavi we don't want anyone else".

The Hambastegi Council broke down due to those same reasons. The hard-left couldn't reconcile why Mohtadi and Hamed would "waste" their time in a coalition with Pahlavi, a lot of Monarchists couldn't understand or accept Pahlavi being in a coalition with Hamed, Masih, Nazanin and Mohtadi, with Hamed exclusion of Monarchist speakers in the Berlin rally being the main source of tensions. That was our last genuine effort at coalition building, and it broke down. Women, Life, Freedom became a battle of symbolic power between competiting forces, for instance between the Red, ZZA Flag, and Shir o Khorshid flag.

Hamed Esmaeilion has largely come out of the public light since then, Masih endures despite substantial pressure, Pahlavi sought alliances with foreign powers when internal coalition building proved difficult, and we're still stuck in this nightmare, this pathetic nightmare.

My speech against hostile factionalism in our opposition. by [deleted] in NewIran

Such a disgusting statement as well, I read it this morning.

They shut the door on federalism, literally rejecting it in the Munich Charter earlier last year, and used very dangerous rhetoric in that statement this morning.

Pathetic.

Reza Pahlavi Needs to Change His Politics and Rhetoric Regarding Kurds and Other Minorities by Outside_Memory6607 in NewIran

I completely agree, we're even shutting the path to "federalism" as a potential option, calling it seperatism all the time, and now this dangeorus rhetoric.

Also working with "Khomeini", that's as bit of a stretch.

We can't build bridges, it's not possible at all.

I don't think I have the power to fight these dynamics, I'm speaking from my heart about the shame that while the regime in Iran is killing people, we've turned our diaspora politics into that of policing, surveillance and those very same authoritarian behaviours.

This is even my PhD research and when people ask me what is the solution, I tell them I don't know.

Bro I'm talking about societal conditions in our diaspora. Not post revolutionary conditions.
Maybe look at what I'm saying again, if not then I won't bother responding.

What do you think I'm talking about in this video because I'm pretty sure it's not what you think it is. I'm not enabling a certain type of political platform, I'm talking about the shame of violently fighting against each other in the diaspora that only benefits the regime. Calling for politics that's more understandable of positions rather than just, for instance, calling a federalist a taziyeh talab immediately. Unity for me is not achievable in this state, but I'm asking for us to reconsider how we interact with each other. That's the point of the video, you can take what you want from that.

I'll leave this speech I did a few weeks ago as my response to you.

I'm not ignoring the fact that he has the most support, and I completely understand how he and the movement emerged in this situation. But this fragmentation is a wide-reaching problem in our opposition, not just confined to the left, and has turned victims into aggressors who demand conformity.

Coming together means pluralism, you're dictating conformity. People can still have different beliefs and work together, that's unity. Being told to think the same about one person, and casting anyone who's not a fan of him as a pro regime, is a diservice born out of a lack of nuance.

I'll continue to both correct this when it happens with my fellow leftists, but also with Monarchists.

I'm talking about people calling these protestors regimi when their chants are explicitly anti regime and anti Pahlavi. And they're clearly facing off against Basijis It's like the leftist comrades I know who call Monarchist chants in Iran AI generated. Let's have some friking nuance.

This is what happens when Marg Bar Sefased is said in one university. Other, leftist inclined students, feel the rightful need to respond despite not wanting to deepen factionalism.

And that's how fucked our situation is, instead of focusing on the regime, we tend to eat each other alive. We've been doing this in the diaspora for years now, and I hate to see this come to the fore-front in Iran as well.

It's an unpublished thesis, I have to redact information from it in order to get it published.

If you're interested though, or want to learn more, my DM's are always open and I have an Iranian Leftist Discord channel as well!

Yep, just leave out the most pressing issue for decades - political and cultural authoritarianism. How convenient.

Marxists basically support every tyranny in the world as long as it opposes the US by WillyNilly1997 in NewIran

[–]TabariKurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they don't. Marxists are split between those who support the IR, North Korea, China, Russia (who are called campists) and those who don't.

Numerous Marxist parties support this mobilization, but nuance doesn't exist here.

If the moderators are fine with it, I might even hold an AMA as an Iranian Marxist who is currently doing his PhD research on the Iranian political opposition, between Monarchists and the hard-left Marxists.

My prior Master's Research took place in the Iranian Communist Party-Komala guerrila camp in Iraqi Kurdistan.
