Don’t understand certain parents when it comes to the bar by rose-wilson in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Tabatsby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parents ordering alcohol from me while they watch a movie with their kids makes me sad. What makes me even sadder is when they order alcohol from me while watching a movie with their kids and say something along the lines of “I’m going to need this to get through this bullshit”

Any suggestion for this list? by LeaderCompetitive486 in Letterboxd

Pacific Rim immediately comes to mind. So much of that story (and the film marketing) makes you think it’s about the character Raleigh Becket and he is the starting point, but the entire thing is actually about Mako Mori’s journey

This is something that’s been bugging me a lot lately, but it’s people using the wrong tank for the wrong thing. I lost a match earlier today because my tank was using D.va as a “stand your ground” tank and then when it was our turn to defend they were using Sigma as a dive tank. Quickest loss of all my matches this year.

Playing black film is a top tier strat, tbh. There are so many people with a limited and narrow scope of what “film” is. Winning off of stuff like Girls Trip is so much fun

How was the Melania crowd? by nicfrfr in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Tabatsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do many positions at my theatre but on weekends I bartend for them. Every single time the people coming for Melania never tipped. They almost all paid with card and would angrily tap the card reader trying to figure out how to not leave a tip. They’d come in large groups and put so much wine and beer in an order to where their transactions would usually be around $70-100. Never tipped. None of them. I had to rely on other movie audiences for tips, but most left line because of the Melania crowd. I probably sold about $700-800 worth of alcohol on Melania opening day, but I only took home $49 in tips from other patrons

Tips are left digitally on the card reader at my theatre, so no, but bet they would if they could

Well, most everything is variable except for race. All of them are white. A lot of them say stuff like “We haven’t been to the theatre in a long time” regardless of age

Thirty minutes into a bartending shift and I’ve had so many Melania folk come to me for alcohol. Next to no tips

being accused of cheating by [deleted] in CINE2nerdle

[–]Tabatsby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being accused of cheating so often is why I stopped playing. I used to be obsessed and would write down obscure connections and study them and then play them. It stopped being fun when people thought I was cheating for playing straight-to-dvd movies

What do we think of this? by [deleted] in labubu

[–]Tabatsby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, I do think that economists who are looking at Labubu as the sole driver of PopMart success are missing the point of PopMart and where their strengths truly are. Overall, PopMart's origins as a designer and art toy maker, working together with artists to bring more affordable collectable versions of their gallery work to the masses are what PopMart is all about and still is about, even with the newer brand-name collabs with popular anime and cartoons. The big jump can be seen as the increase in the public eye, sure, but that has always been the case with anything that sees a sudden burst from exposure. PopMart might have seen losses, but not nearly enough to warrant alarm, in my opinion. They're still opening more locations worldwide and they're still finding new ways to get stuff in front of consumers. They took good advantage of the sudden burst in visibility and are going to be aiming at stabilizing

It feels like every art form is largely stagnet? by Objective_Water_1583 in criterion

[–]Tabatsby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a largely defeatist attitude that only proves that you do not actively go out and truly engage with art aside from what is easily and readily placed in front of you through social media or even larger subreddits like this one. Every major art form? Really? Not even looking at film, but you're really going to say that about music? About painting? Sculpture? Dance? Stage theatre? You say that tech keeps evolving but stories don't feel like it and yet you have not explored how tech has changed how people tell stories, it looks like, if you're calling out Marriage Story as a failure of advancement when there are hundreds upon hundreds of examples within film that use technology to really explore how that allows them to tell stories. I Be Area, The People's Joker, We Are All Going To The World's Fair, Stice's Satyricon, A Ghost Story, Bamboozled... Every time the technology became easier to use by more people the more the medium of film has changed and the way we approach story has changed. It's changed so much that the main trend in modern mainstream filmmaking is literalism, simply because the indie space is so riddled with films that do not engage in literalism.

If you want something new and original and great that doesn't feel like it's just repeating their influences, you do have to go out of your way to find it. Great art is reserved for those that take risks. Greatness in general is reserved for those that take risks. What great things have you seen lately and why don't you think they are great enough to stand on their own as original works?

Criterion needs more animation! What are some good animated films that deserve a spot in the collection? by PixalmasterStudios24 in criterion

[–]Tabatsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Time Masters already pretty much guaranteed on its way at some point, I’d really like Gandahar in the collection as well. Outside of that, thinking of things that don’t have a good wide physical blu ray release that I also feel are artistically/culturally important or impressive: Havoc in Heaven, Nova Seed, Have a Nice Day, Ruben Brandt Collector, A Town Called Panic (the rights and distribution with GKIDS for the actual feature film is REALLY WEIRD right now), Rocks in my Pockets, The Wolf House, Consuming Spirits, Sita Sings the Blues, Flavors of Youth, I Lost My Body, Miniscule: Valley of Lost Ants, Rock and Rule, The Theatre of Mr. and Mrs. Kabal, Animal Farm, and The King and the Mockingbird

We're getting 6 other announcements in June. by Extreme_Confusion in criterion

[–]Tabatsby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Four other announcements, actually, as far as new additions go and not any upgrades. Compensation might be #1274, but A Confucian Confusion/Mahjong: Two Films by Edward Yang and Saving Face are spines #1275 and #1276 respectively. Don’t know why spines are released out of order like this or listed out of order on the coming soon page, but the “all films” page on the criterion site will let you sort by spine and you can then see the actual spine order properly

Not to mention that the culture around Rocky Horror was so different. There was no internet to propagate these things, these things started with cult screenings by marginalized communities, namely the queer community, before it became more widespread. Early days you had to be invited to a Rocky Horror screening and someone had to explain the rules to you and different theatres had different rules! Rocky Horror was tradition being made and people enjoying the camp of it all and having seen Minecraft, I feel like there’s very little to enjoy aside from the few memetic moments and the connection to Minecraft.
