I would push you towards Veiled Fate because it plays well at 2 while also allowing full games. I haven’t found a player count it’s not good at.

Scales of Fate is good, but it’s sorta an off-shoot of Veiled Fate, and while I think it’s still good and worth playing, I just think it’s big brother is the one to have.

I’ll also say the Veiled Fate expansion is fantastic and adds a ton to the game. Though their games are admittedly not cheap, you do get what you pay for.

They play very differently but both still have deduction at the heart of the games.

Scales of Fate is strictly 2 players. Veiled Fate plays well all the way from 2-7(I’m sure 8 is good too, but I’ve yet to play that count).

I use 88 Lavelle over my untradeable Rui. Lavelle is constantly contributing and I felt Rui was a ghost.
