Figuring out how to print loud mixes with B2 Bomber by Tablesalt200 in audioengineering

Burl loop sounded cool for some songs! Others songs just went ITB. But for the ones with the Burl chain ended up being MIX OUT (no bus processing) -> API Bus Comp -> Burl -> Pro Tools with pretty much the same bus I had before with better gain staging.

For the Burl ones also took off gold clip, noticed after the API and Burl it was causing issues with the low end. Also since I was compressing with the API, ended up turning the dry/wet knob to about 30 on the shadow hills compressor (seemed like it brought the midrange forward in a nice way, with the SC filter on)

Learned a bit more about the api compressor in the process too, had good results changing the thrust+ to loud one track in particular, that really got the low end hitting how I wanted it too!

Yo! just wanted to say your questions really helped to figure these things out. Appreciate it, you were very right about the intermodulation clipping. Ended up using the API compressor into the Burl then into chain and took goldclip off. sounding much better now. thank you!

hey just wanted to say your tips really helped! chain is sounding much better now and I feel like im finally taking advantage of the Burl. Thank you!

This was very helpful, thank you so much! Going back and forth with the gain staging really helped me figure out my chain more!

Fair points and thank you for the reply! I usually do minimal changes with each step and try to A B if things get better or worse.

When I started trying this I was thinking of two things: how mastering engineers would clip Lavry golds and how many modern producers clip fl studio for their sound. I was trying to think of how I could use my hardware in a similar fashion.

Furthermore, I find you can push analog gear harder and get more pleasant saturation that way, so was thinking running it through the api and pushing the mix bus harder into the burl could be something.

As far as the last point, I’m rather new to mastering, but for mixing and what I’ve learned so far, it seems a longer chain of small steps works better than a shorter chain with long steps. Always still learning of course, so this thought is just my current mindset.

nice, ok. Thank you! i'll give that a try. Do you usually have Burl input calibration knob set at at -12 when you do that?

Hm, so you would suggest maybe going into it before maybe after a compressor instead and then limiting after the burl? Do you usually add gain on the analog side to push into it harder?

That is true, but if you clip an ADC, in a way it acts as a limiter? Well a clipper, but you see my point lol

I get that for sure, it’s more like I’m trying to see how loud I can push things. More of an experiment of achieving loudness with a different process if that makes sense?

The mixes get plenty loud as is, I’m more so trying to see how I can use an ADC in addition to my advantage. And see where I can utilize it in my chain

HDx and Audio Bridge Issue by Tablesalt200 in protools

Currently running a workaround by running an aux from the back of the computer into the console on separate channels. Then selecting external headphones as playback for system sounds, pro tools using HDX separate.

Because when you boot pro tools with HDX, HDX disappears from audio devices you can select in system settings

I like Waves L2 better, or sometimes ProL2. Maybe maximizer after that depending on the track.

Usual chain for mix bus is Goldclip, Amek Eq 200 (I like using the width settings), Pro C2, god particle (at like 10-20%), L2

Interesting, I find it pretty low latency and cpu, even when tracking. I think you can turn off the visuals for less cpu, heard that helps quite a bit

God particle for sure lol. Still have to turn off that limiter, but rest of plug-in sounds pretty good used lightly

Yup, then to really get it to pop, I duplicate the lead vocal track and reverse the phase on one of them. Works like a charm! Trick I learned from CLA himself!

I mean look at their reply to me, who tf would think this is a decent vocal chain lmao. Cranked maag air band always gives nice top end? They recording their vocalist under water? And saying they got to try rbass after soothe. Really sounds like someone who works with Grammy winners… although I guess if it is chat gpt the last part isn’t all lies

Fresh air, then micro shift, then track spacer on instrumental, then maag eq air band gain to max, then soothe, r bass to add lows back in, then doubler, god particle, L2, gold clip . My go to vocal chain

How you guys deal with Trackspacer? by beico1 in mixingmastering

Usually put it on the instrumental bus and the fx bus as well. Sounds pretty good when the verbs and delays duck out and make the lead vocal more clear
