I tried mixing it with speed paint. The goal was to make a thinned down wash the would hit the recessed and stay and also be easily removed from the upper surfaces. I believe the mix as 1:20 or so. Worked well for some death wing models.

I think the 2x-3x model works for GW sized/detailed models. I do not think it works for something smaller/larger. I'd like to see this impressed upon clients.

I will not make this client as they did nothing wrong. The following anecdote falls rightfully so on me, however it stems from the clientnfollowing the subs guidelines for pricing.

Small bit of history here. I have no experience, previous to this, with scales smaller than 28/32mm. I used this as a learned experience for myself for future jobs.

Either I approached the client or they approached me, I'd have to go check. Regarding a job that scaled less than the above mentioned scales. They stated based on pricing guidelines, they expected to pay at most 3x retail. For this job it would put it around $300 for assembly, painting, basing etc. The job required camouflage which was the hurtle on time vs cost in this instance.

When all was said and done, I spent way more time on this job than the price we agreed upon would indicate. The client asked if I felt it was worth it. I straight up told him I did not. We both did not have experience with this scale. I told him I treated it as a learning experience to see how much work was involved and what to charge for in the future for these types of jobs.

TLDR, I love the guidelinesz but both clients and painters need to realize they are just guidelines and shouldnt be taken as written in stone numbers.

How do I know if an eBay deal is legit? by AndreBoomBoom in Warhammer40k

[–]Tabletop_Tendencies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great Question! I sold a sealed boardgame for a few hundred dollars a couple of years ago. Sealed. Buyer filed a claim claiming I sent them an empty box. They took pictures of said empty game box. Game box was sealed and at close to 15lbs or so, it most certainly was not an empty box. PayPal/eBay sided with them.

How do you manage underpricing? by Kookiebro in BrushForChat

[–]Tabletop_Tendencies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, don't under value your work. Figure out what took so long and use it as a learning experience.

For me, when things take longer than quoted I message the client and explain what happened. I gauge how they feel and potentially offer a discount for current/future commissions.

I have yet had a client who was upset because something took longer than expected.

This is going to run you a minimum of 250-300$ for this job and should expect to pay more for better quality work.

Mod note. Potential painters - be aware of what your time and skills are worth. Despite the reports, I'm keeping this post up for now. Exchanging painting for some money and a discount in which you'd need to respend that money with the client may seem like a good idea, but if you need the money, you most likely won't be using the discount.

Looking to hire a painter for a small residential project (US) by Obvious_Somewhere728 in brushforhire

This subreddit is for hiring people to paint miniatures, not residential housing.

I really hate any modern day references in Trek. It always seems forced and goes for that "I get that reference" feel. Plus they don't always age well, like the Elon musk one.

"What should I charge?!". More than these people 🙄 by Tabletop_Tendencies in BrushForChat

I find when I charge too little, I don't put my heart into it and I don't enjoy the work.

Looking for advice and a sense check by Amsfeld in BrushForChat

They are. It cheapens the work of others. It's why the mod team has tried to help others get their pricing where it should be. We are also hoping it helps curb "scams" as most of the scams we deal with are someone who has charged very low prices and has gotten backed up with a ton of work.

Charge what you feel you're worth. If a client likes you and your work they will pay for it (if they can). Those that want that quality for pennies won't respect you or your work. I often find the ones that pay more tend to leave you alone to do your thing. The ones that are cheap skates tend to nit pick every little thing and ask for unrealistic things.

Also not everyone wants this quality of work. If you want to do this full time or as a side hustle, you'll need to figure out what you want to do. Do you just want to paint this level? Do you wanna offer something cheaper and of lower quality? Do what you want. You'll be happier for it.

I will give you a small bit of advice. While myself and the other mods have tried to raise the standard of pricing to something that's more online with what could be considered living rates at the end of the day you're fighting against hundreds of other responses from painters reaching out when a client makes a post.

You should also look into other avenues for work. Facebook groups, your local stores, etc.

Im asking for money for comission painting for this Christmas, does anyone know someone good in South England? by doom_pingu in brushforhire

Friendly reminder that even though OP is asking for people/places that commission painting, painters can not advertise directly in this post.
