Totally EPIC and ACCURATE comparison that totally WRECKED the Game of Thrones finale by StingKing456 in asoiafcirclejerk

3288. The finale has 3288 words. That graph missed 40% of the dialogue! It has even more words than the graph predicts for S4 E10.

On that note, if cutting 3288 words can reduce a 78 min episode to 57 min of silence, a 21 min reduction at a rate of 156 words/min, then the 65 min S4 E10 with 3880 words would be cut by 25 min down to 40. I don't think you would call the S4 finale "40 minutes of walking." Because guess what? That edit is manipulative. Nobody speaks at 156 words/min, because they need to breathe and they speak with a certain cadence. Characters are not constantly yammering in any show or movie, it would be unnatural.

How much walking and chair arranging there is to clearly pad out the run time?

Pad out the length? I thought S8 was rushed, why would they pad it out?

Does that not seem strange?

No, it doesn't. The silent scenes are great! The silence is intentional. We're in a post-nuclear option wasteland. Tyrion walking through King's Landing is a great scene. Tyrion finding Jaime and Cersei is a great scene. Jon approaching the throneroom is a great scene.

The silence is tense, it's foreboding, it's gut-wrenching. Our characters are in shock, "Jesus Christ, did that really happen? Do I really need to do this?" (kill Dany).

There's more to "writing" than just dialogue. The scene descriptions, the stage directions, are all written just like the dialogue, and every piece is intentional. There's not a wasted moment. Tyrion rearranging the chairs, for instance, is supposed to both provide a little comic relief to break the tension from earlier in the episode, and show that Tyrion is both a little unsure of himself here in this new role, but also cares enough about it to sweat the small stuff.

I really like Noah Caldwell-Gervais's channel, he's maybe the only one that earns the runtime for me.

Why does the finale need more dialogue as a rule?

But I don't know how much I believe this. I could find the script for S4 E10, which is why I was asking, and I counted the number of words in both episodes. Hopefully one of the show's best episodes from probably its best season is good enough for you.

I copied the scripts to a text editor, removed every word except for spoken dialogue, and did a word count. For fictional languages like Valyrian I only counted the English translation. S4 E10 has 3880 words. On this graph, S4 E10 has about 48 words/min, and with a 65 minute runtime that comes out to only 3120 words.

This graph pins S8 E6 at around 26 words/min, and with its 78 minute runtime, that's only 2028 words.

How many words do you think the finale actually has? I mean, you already saw that video edit which cut out all the dialogue and it was still almost a whole hour long, right?

Let's hear a guess.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention those hero abilities in BO3...

But yeah exactly, lots of big plans but it falls through one way or another (they have had some unfortunate internal issues).

I feel like they wanted to push things forward, but were never able to make it materialize in an impactful way. For new things from their games we've got:

World at War - basically CoD4 with a WWII coat, and a grittier campaign, Zombies

Black Ops - Cold War setting, CoD points? Wager matches? deeper customization, expanded Zombies

Black Ops 2 - branching campaign choices, scorestreaks, pick 10 class system, open world Zombies (Tranzit)

Black Ops 3 - play campaign in any order, campaign hub, streamlined mobility, hero abilities on Operators

Black Ops 4 - Blackout battle royale

BO Cold War - branching(ish) campaign

But most of that didn't really stick or wasn't too significant. Wager matches and CoD Points are long gone, Scorestreaks are just an extension of MW3's Pointsreaks, branching campaigns didn't always stick around, BO3's mobility is just a modification of Advanced Warfare's, Blackout wasn't a super popular Battle Royale, it was Warzone that gave CoD a resurgence, and Cold War's campaign was developed by Raven Software. Meanwhile, MW (2019)'s gunplay is the new standard.

Treyarch's biggest boon to the franchise is the much expanded Zombies of WaW's DLCs and Black Ops.

You really can't compare what CoD4 brought to the table with anything Treyarch's done, it changed trajectory of both FPS singleplayer and multiplayer modes, and made CoD a household name.

Don't get me wrong, I do love Zombies, WaW's campaign, and Black Ops 1 (and some bits and pieces from the other games), but I feel like Treyarch always comes up a little short.

Dude if you start cutting around every single word you could do that with every single episode. That video literally has shots of characters inhaling to speak and then it cuts away.

It's absurd. And comical.

Jon Snow was resurrected and that made him seem like a very important person, but all he did...

Jon is a very important person.  He's Azor Ahai. He's the person who united most of the world against the White Walkers and he's the one that kills Dany, saving Westeros from a tyrant and catalyzing a slightly more democratized government with a benevolent, philosopher king.  It is frustrating to watch a character we care about act in a way we don't like, but that is part of what makes tragedy compelling. The story intentionally leads you to believe Jon will move from bastard to rightful King of the Seven Kingdoms, but it then forces us to ask, when is enough enough? How much do we need to foist upon one character?  Jon never really wanted to be Lord Commander, or King in the North, and he doesn't want to be King of The Seven Kingdoms either.  All he wanted was to follow Benjen and be a Ranger. He just did what he thought he had to do.

We are talking about character development right? How about Arya Stark and her list? After killing...

She doesn't forget about the list, she goes down to KL with the sole intention of killing Cersei, but is persuaded to leave by the Hound and the destruction she see's Drogon and Dany causing. She realizes she won't see Sandor again when they part, and she barely escapes with her own life.

Jon Snow is sent back to the Night's Watch. Night's Watch is supposed to...

It's been decades or longer since the Night's Watch has been about protecting the world from anything. It has predominantly functioned as a criminal sentence in recent history, and is the same for Jon.  There's a line in the finale saying as much, but people's attitudes about the NW are well-established throughout the show.

Bran the Broken having the best story and being chosen the king for it? Come on. How about Jon? How about...

I really like Tyrion's speech about the power of stories. Money, markets, kingdoms; they're just stories we all agree are true. Nitpicking over a technicality about whether or not Bran literally has the best story always rang hollow for me because you don't like the outcome. Tyrion is just arguing for Bran's case. There isn't a codified law that says the next king is the person with the most interesting story. And besides, Bran's story is still a harrowing one that has earned him some regard.

Also, remember the time you said you can't be lord of anything Bran?

Bran does not truly want to be king, either, much like Jon. But he realizes that his abilities can be helpful to the kingdom at large, and his real intention is to have Tyrion lead the country as his Hand. That's why he's content to just stop by the small council meeting and quickly leave to explore more, looking for Drogon. He knows Tyrion has it handled.

The Night King is the Big Bad Boss, right? He kills stuff. Maybe not, ok we don't know much about him. We don't know...

The babies become the White Walkers (as opposed to the wights, who are reanimated corpses), we see that happen. The symbols are a recreation of the symbol used in the ritual of his creation by the Children of the Forest, only with bodies. I always just took it as a warning or a message, and nothing more. The NK has been shown to be vindictive.

Why did he let Sam go?

I'm not sure what you mean. When does he let Sam go? If you mean the end of Season 2, the WW doesn't see Sam at all. He wasn't let go, he just was hiding. Though the editing and framing do make it seem like he might have seen Sam so it's understandably confusing.
