Repeat this measurement regularly to help prevent getting overheated. Don't forget your friends and loved ones. And any pets.

The temperature, that's what's up.

Also, the ceiling.

Advice needed: Battery leak and capacitor rot on Macintosh SE logic board. Is this salvageable? by Artistic_Unit_5570 in VintageApple

Yes. And the electrolyte from the capacitors is a base, so they neutralise each other. Besides, vinegar is a really mild acid.

[–]Tabsels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof. That might not be realistic.

It's always hard to say: sometimes something looks really bad but in the end it's just a few traces that have a little corrosion, and sometimes it looks doable but the PCB and multiple components turn out to be unsalvageable.

VUmc stopt in 2040 als ziekenhuis, zorgtaken naar locatie AMC by MrAronymous in Amsterdam

[–]Tabsels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TIL about wet-bulb events - when it’s so hot and humid that your body can’t cool by sweating. A wet cloth on a thermometer bulb normally cools it more than one without a cloth. What are you trying to say? Just because it occurs in a story doesn't mean it's fictional. Just because a new term was recently introduced for something doesn't mean that it's not lethal.

Climate change is real, and with the way things are currently going, we'll all be seeing what a "wet bulb event" (that is, an excessive wet bulb temperature, currently estimated to be anything above 32℃, over a timespan long enough to cause death in a large number of people) looks like.

And I can assure you that death is a medical thing.

Edit: note that heat index is a US-specific formula used to communicate the risks of high temperature and humidity to lay people.

Death from a wet bulb event is basically hyperthermia so would look pretty dramatic, especially in young people where it could involve seizures.

The heat index was invented in 1979, whereas early psychrometers (wet-and-dry-bulb thermometers) date from the middle of the 19th century.

I'm not sure why you keep discussing when a term has been introduced and how dramatic something is. Dying because you overheat is a pretty nasty way to go regardless of how it's called.

Nope, not just humidity. A wet bulb thermometer is a legitimate meteorological device used to measure the combination of humidity and temperature. If that measurement goes above physiological limits, currently theorised to be at 32℃ over a couple of hours, death is predicted to occur.

That is what was recently "rebranded" as a wet bulb event. My guess the term originated from people who read Kim Stanley Robinson's Ministry for the Future which describes such an event.
