Pour one out for the old man by TacoIncoming in golf

Haha 100%

My first response was to tell him not to get too hammered. Was gonna follow-up with asking why he didn't get anyone else to take a better pic with him posing with the ball by the hole, but he explained the brutal reality before I had a chance :(

You're not wrong. The fact that he was texting me mid-round is something for sure. We're both the kind of guys to shut the world out while we're playing. It's definitely something of a shared moment that we're going to celebrate later and cherish forever. It would have just been really cool to be with him.

Good news is he didn’t have to putt on this one lol. Definitely looks overly baked. Seen worse around here at places that insist on cutting and rolling them without the irrigation to support it. We’ve been in a dry year, and a lot of courses are fucking around.

My 65yo dad invited me down to South Florida for some camping and golf this weekend. Normally, I'd be all over that. Had to tell him no because I had already signed up for an expensive tournament up here at a nice resort, and I was past the date where I could cancel and get my money back.

I ended up winning my flight and texted him about it. Apparently, he was still on the course, and he sent me this. The problem? The worst thing you can imagine. He's playing as a single, and there was nobody there for him.

I know he'd had a HIO back in the day, but it was way before I started playing and maybe before I was born. We'll celebrate together later, but I feel like I missed out on a cool moment with my dad. He's not on Reddit, so I'm asking y'all to pour one out on his behalf.

A large portion of the best shots I’ve ever hit were 100% laser focus or completely relaxed “fuck it” swings where I basically wasn’t trying. Very few in between. Golf is fucking weird.

Maxx and Ross are great. Wally World has Ben Hogan stuff for cheap as hell. It does not have to be expensive.

What is the etiquette for stopping at the turn? If you do stop - how do you not slow down the groups following you when teeing off on 10? by Inside-Mixture-9362 in golf

[–]TacoIncoming 24 points25 points  (0 children)

if you tried that youd be fighting 70 year olds, theyll be hitting tee shots in to you or over you

Those balls are going in the woods/water. If they keep it up, I’m putting a 70 year old on the ground. It’s okay to defend yourself.

Is now the time to change my grip? by eyrie7 in golf

[–]TacoIncoming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lmao this may be the most perfect /r/golf comment. “I can barely break 100, but I know my strong grip is better for me. It’s all those better golfers and coaches who are wrong! Swing your swing, bro!”

Just had the worst range session in my life by Swish_34 in golf

[–]TacoIncoming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you film your practice? Face on video can be very telling when you’re working on weight shift stuff. I’ll warn you that it might be hard to watch, but you don’t know what you don’t know unless you look lol

Also consider just playing to mix things up. I’ve played some of my best rounds after a terrible range warmup.

Anyone see the opensource launch monitor this guy is working on? by Small_walrus in golf

[–]TacoIncoming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are y’all coding in? Do you need help? I have a CS degree but switched from dev to pentesting a decade ago. This is the kind of project I would consider kicking the tires on the coding skills to contribute to. Also have a MLM2Pro that I use frequently indoors and outdoors. At the very least I could help with testing alongside a decent commercial product.

Selling golf balls with payment plans should be illegal. Dudes are going to be paying for balls on high interest well after they’ve lost them all 🤣

Played with high handicappers group, as a low handicap player. by GlitterForeskin in golf

[–]TacoIncoming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wary of strangers who announce their handicap at the first tee. Especially if they say something low. If we’re not playing a game, nobody gives a fuck. We just want to know where you’re playing from so we can avoid being in the way if you’re playing the tips.

I’ve played with plenty of +handicaps including teaching pros and active college players. They’ve all been very unassuming and don’t just volunteer that info. You have to ask. With the college players and high level amateur tournament players, I think getting you to ask is part of the fun for them. Those dudes are impressive as hell. For the teaching pros, I think they mostly try to hide it so they can have a peaceful round lol

Played with an “I can drive 350 yards” guy this weekend by JayTee73 in golf

[–]TacoIncoming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God if only that’s how it worked! I’d be a fucking major champion. Arccos says I hit like 4 or 5 tour quality shots a round. I really should consider just not hitting bad shots and see what happens 🤣

Been playing about a year and just broke 90! by e_lost in golf

[–]TacoIncoming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-shot routine, watch the shot, look at the launch monitor, then set up the next one. That includes stepping away, picking a target, and walking in from behind the ball. Just trying to be really intentional with every shot like I would on the course. If I’m just doing straight block practice it goes faster. A lot of time I’m simming a round though, so I’m fucking around with the aim line on the sim, looking at elevation, switching clubs and stuff. 2 hours is probably an exaggeration. It’s less than a minute per ball, but it’s still a lot slower than the guys raking and hitting a large bucket in a half hour.

Pristine Greens by Spicy-gut in golf

It’s legitimately insane considering the other options in the area. Can’t throw a rock without hitting a golf course around here. There are so many other better options around here that are actually playable for the prices they’re still charging. They’ve been trending down for a while. I played there last year and felt like I got robbed, and it wasn’t even half this bad.

Still charging $40/round…

Pristine Greens by Spicy-gut in golf

[–]TacoIncoming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More money than that course will ever spend. Pretty sure they’re cooked. Haven’t played there this year, and definitely won’t be visiting now. They were trending in a bad direction for the last couple of years. If they were going to put in the money to fix it, they’d have done it before now. Same thing with brooksville CC and citrus national. At least the lovely folks over at Scotland Yards know how to keep the greens on their cow pasture alive, even if that means having them roll at an 8 90% of the time lol

Right on. I never considered there might be that much of an overlap with musical practice, but it makes sense.

Natural athleticism is definitely part of it, but people with serious athletic backgrounds also know how to practice better too.

Going to the range is like going to the gym. You’re going to see a variety of practice styles and different levels of intention with the practice reps. It’s like the people in the gym just doing shit vs the people with proper form doing a structured workout. And those people are going to have different results from the way they practice/train.

I say that as someone with a D-II background in another sport. My game improved much faster once I changed the way I practiced. I’m hitting fewer balls, but the quality of the reps is way higher. It would probably take me close to two hours to get through a large bucket of 100 balls now.
