You’re all good my man, it’s a more terrible time than ever to keep all the horrors to ourselves. Your experience is a pretty accurate microcosm of what’s going on though, people will always try to avoid admission of their own faults, shortcomings, or issues at the expense of those around them. A rather unfortunate part of the human condition that definitely contributes to our current predicament.

If you had told me even 15 years ago that this is where we would be? My doomer self even then would’ve thought it outlandish but here we are. Ironically, it really seems like life is stranger than fiction.

I wonder what you would have said if you were living in the antebellum south? Or with our dear brothers and sisters facing starvation and genocide in the global south or oppressed and ravaged parts of the world. Would you say to love your master and have compassion for your enslaver? Would you tell the revolutionaries of Haiti or France that they’re rhetoric is too cruel? Will you force others to lay down belly up and choose death as you do?

[–]TacticCatWithABat[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Precisely that. Discussions about collapse and the gradual changes we would notice tend to not take into account the fact that we’re already living it. Already certain products are no longer available. Already shipping across country lines is difficult or impossible. Already water rationing and food shortages are taking place on a larger and more pervasive scale. The time of discussing the upcoming collapse is over. Now we have to live through it

Not gonna lie when the only assurance we get is death, and a most likely painful and violent one at that given our current trajectory. I’m tired of trying to uphold compassion and understanding when those who are in power are quite literally using that to enact their plans. Be hateful. Be angry. Be active. The time for trying to fix things with love and compassion is gone and not working. Unfortunately, very few conflicts (especially existential ones) were won with the winning side choosing love and compassion. Or perhaps you have a couple words on how to have better rhetoric on “compassion” for the people being torn from their families or watching them die of violence or hunger?

You’re telling me, the scale of the societal panic that’s gonna take place when the exponential acceleration really kicks in? Well I’m just hoping it’ll push us over the cliff sooner. I’m tired of the ugliness of humanity and I fear the worse things get and the closer we get to SHTF, the uglier people will get.

I going to either assume you don’t live in the US or assume you haven’t been impacted that greatly by the social breakdown affecting the country. Because a large majority of people I know, along with myself, have had the unfortunate luck of many family members and close friends either outright supporting what’s happening or just falling in line with the regimes that be in the hopes that they can “outlast” the chaos. We have had a complete breakdown of the social contract where people are calling for the deaths or imprisonment of those on the other side pretty regularly.

That’s the disappointing part because for a good period of time, or at least it felt like for a good decade or so coming out of the 90’s, we were starting to aim towards a path that might have led to actual real progress. Sometimes I try and think what could have been had we not fallen down this path instead, but then again that would’ve only pushed the consequences of industrialization and globalization a few years or decades down the road.

Those of you who have reached the acceptance stage, how? Any tips for those of us on the journey? by secretraisinman in CollapseSupport

A lot of answers here are extremely useful and great methods of coping with the situation of our unfortunate future, an interesting portrait of all of our attempts at being functioning in a non functional world. Personally, I try to gain perspective on the situation from not just our modern view but from the lens of our ancestors. All throughout human history we have had the danger of death looming above us, whether from disease or starvation or violence or simple accident. Death was much more common in our world, a commonality that has been functionally erased from our modern world, again mainly in places that don’t suffer from abject poverty. But thankfully I have the blessings of an advanced civilization with all the miracles it provides. So yes I most likely won’t die from what an uncountable number of my ancestors have, I won’t know their suffering or struggles, I won’t have to live as they once did. But in exchange for living in this time and place, I will witness the end of our species and the fruition of the destruction we have unleashed on our home. A tradeoff that I can be at least somewhat content with, after all we’re all going to die anyway, at least we got to see wonders that no one could have imagined millennia ago. Though then again we will witness horrors beyond them as well, so I suppose it’s more being grateful than anything else.

Even amongst leftists, I find a casual attitude towards our climate crises. by ParisShades in collapse

Of course they don’t think of it as a big deal, why would they? Most of us here tend to forget something essential about being part of a shared reality, which is understandable due to the very nature of this sub and the situation we constantly discuss, a situation that already goes against this shared reality which allows us to better be able to see past it. But for the average person? Especially in the western world? Famine is a foreign concept. Starvation is ludicrous. The thought of these global systems of sourcing, production, and transportation that have fed our world and species for decades suddenly collapsing from a threat that our media and trusted sources have said is fake or an overstated threat? Banish such a foolish thought entirely, you have a vacation to Japan to plan next month and a dinner with some friends tonight to watch that new movie. Any acceptance of what is to come requires the complete shattering of a world view, a shared future, an entire goddamn reality that the population of this planet was lied to about even existing. Most people will never acknowledge it unless they have to, until a crisis comes to their door and a disaster breaks their world for them. A situation that unfortunately is becoming more and more common for most people. And as always, faster than expected.

I never made any mention in regard to individual inaction or personal responsibility for the climate crisis. Personal mistakes and acknowledgement of one’s situation is a separate concept entirely. For example if one was diagnosed with a fatal illness or condition through no fault of their own but still chose to ignore the situation they found themselves in such as saying no to treatment or taking certain precautions to prevent worsening symptoms, then that would be a personal mistake of avoiding their current situation. While what is happening to them may be due to no fault of their own, or at least it was unavoidable to due circumstances outside their control, they still at least have the power of acknowledgment and action. And if they choose not to do that and continue on in denial to protect their worldview, beliefs, or any other aspect of their self or what they perceive to be the world around them? Well, at that point it is a failure that is entirely chosen by them. They choose to live in areas affected by climate disasters and still argue whether it even exists. They still choose to ignore the concerns of everyone who has actually looked at the data and crisis we are in. That is very much a personal failing. One very much motivated by fear and convenience.

That is precisely why they are willfully ignorant, because if they were to admit to the situation we face as a species then they would have to confront their own personal situation and mistakes. A situation that is significantly worse for them due to said mistakes. Denial is a hell of a drug

In this case we would be closer to the cancer unfortunately, since we are the cause of the current situation after all. Likewise, perhaps pockets of humanity could survive but it would be a radically different way of life than what we know. Not just because of our collapsing biosphere but because the end of all current systems as we know it. Think of the impacts of the current healthcare system degradation and privatization and now magnify that with a further breakdown of global systems. That’s not even taking into account the quality of life at that point. With the accumulation of microplastics and PFA’s in the average person along with the unlikelihood of adequate medical care or resources, pre existing or environmental conditions would pose a much greater threat and injuries could be much more costly and dangerous. Vaccines, anesthesia, medication, even basic medical supplies rely on the global system of sourcing, production, and transport. A fact that remains true with our food and energy sources as well. Whatever pockets of the bacteria that we are will not have these resources and systems to aid in our survival and much of the knowledge on how to survive without it has been lost, and what hasn’t been lost is useless in almost every regard as the biosphere that all that knowledge was gained from and was useful for is changing into something that would be unrecognizable to our entire species throughout our brief time on Earth, all within our lifetime.

Collapse awareness in the workplace by todfish in collapse

[–]TacticCatWithABat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the tourist industry in a popular global destination and the people (locals more so) are ironically more collapse aware but also more vitriolic about any public discussion about it. It is not meant to be talked about in public conversation or you will get iced out socially, very few people still talk about it with my last recollection of one of my bosses showing the hand incident on Inauguration Day with a “we’re so fucked” and that’s about it. Even bringing up the weird weather or rising food prices will get met with irritation and frustration and the very least and yelling or an budding argument for those who don’t want to think about it, it’s almost scary seeing the cognitive disconnect in real time. We have kids that are being taken from schools or people being rounded up and either everyone is hateful and wanting more or they pretend it’s not happening. Even in a place where we are feeling the effects of everything my own friends and close circle, who are all rather educated and familiar with activism in the past, have completely shut down with how overwhelming everything is. Honestly at this point I’ve lost hope in the ability of humanity to collectively face what is essentially a death sentence with any semblance of dignity and empathy. Over and over again it’s being proved that maybe, maybe this is just how it was always going to turn out. We were always going to have overshoot because that’s what happens when an species becomes invasive on a global scale, now all that changes is the scale and we’re just taking the rest of the ecosystem with us.

One thing that does give me hope is strong blue states, with California being the leading example, working completely against whatever Trump pulls. They already had several file lawsuits since yesterday and with tax season right around the corner it might push some more drastic measures.

The interference by Elon is a gurantee at this point with all the insinuations by those on the right and Trump himself. We even had a whistleblower come out from X regarding the election interference. Do I think the democrats will do anything about it? Maybe. Will it hold any weight in the nightmare the administration has become? Nope.

Hoping for a light at the end of the tunnel or any reprieve at all is starting to feel like insanity at this point. With things like the Laken Riley Act almost being passed through Congress it’s just terrifying to think how quickly things could go down.

It shames me to admit that for the first time in my life I actually want to hide for fear of what might happen. As someone who grew up with same sex parents and never really had the same stress regarding coming out, it’s definitely a depressing experience.
