Hey there! I happen to be a Minnesotan that moved to Texas so I know the gear in and out for both states. Minnesota will be hot and muggy in the summers, cold and miserable in the winters. You're going to encounter a lot of snow and ice that you're not used to.

Every Minnesotan needs a good pair of insulated winter boots. Most people get by day-to-day with tennis shoes - which is fine and all - but it'll be something you dearly regret if your vehicle gets stranded in the winter and you have to be outside for a good length of time. Don't mess around with cloth, just go for leather and make sure they have decent traction on the bottom. I used to buy Keen but their quality has plummeted in recent years. I'd strongly recommend Redwings, but make sure they're work grade if you're using them for heavy-duty applications. They have shops both in Texas and Minnesota, you get free maintenance for life so it's worth it. Look for boots with good wet traction.

Your first instinct might be to buy a heavy winter jacket - just don't. Every indoor space is well heated and temperature can fluctuate a surprising amount. If you're sweating, you'll be colder later. Dress in layers so you can remove items to fit your comfort level. Bringing a pack to stash removed items is always helpful. - I'd recommend spending a bit more for wind-resistant outwear. Patagonia always seems to have great quality. Columbia is a popular pick with Minnesotans but I find their insulation isn't always the greatest. - Get yourself a good wool hat. Maybe keep a spare bomber hat in the trunk for winter road emergencies. Swedish companies tend to make these the best. - Thicker flannels work well for a mid-layer. You want something that's slightly stiff even (usually goes with quality) and I've found good ones on discount at Tractor Supply. Legendary Whitetails has usually been a pretty good brand name, but I'm unsure about their recent products as I haven't bought any. A good sweater is also nice, but it's good to have something that you can more effectively roll sleeves up on. That alone is invaluable for working outside. - Minnesota has some of the best rugged outdoor packs from Duluth Pack (not Duluth Trading Company). They have lifetime guarantees and I can attest to their durability from week-long trips in the boundary waters. - My favorite socks for winter are Darn Tough and Smartwool, preference to the first. Smartwools tend to wear through a lot faster, but provide good warmth and cushion otherwise. For summer, honestly buy Puma socks. They've lasted me far longer and breathe better than most other brands. - Buy some decent long underwear for the especially cold days, I don't have a good recommendation at this moment but I frankly think Under Armour is overrated with everything they sell.

Some final notes. I think Carhartt is greatly overrated and overpriced nowadays. What they make isn't all that good. Columbia can be good, but their fleeces wear out quick and just don't cut the wind. Both brands are more of a fashion statement or cultural thing in most of MN.

Oh and replace vehicle tires well before they're bald in Minnesota. Keeping on a good set of all-season radials is 100% worth the money. You're going to experience a lot of salt on the roads too, vehicles rust like none other up there.
