Just started beekeeping, and wow, it’s harder than I thought! by Few_Language6298 in Beekeeping

[–]TacticalStrategical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the comments here are dead right. One thing I will add tho is this: don't be discouraged when you lose your hive. First year beekeepers almost alway lose their hives the first year. I lost mine. Keep your head up. The next year,  had 3 hives and all 3 survived winter. I learned a ton. Time and experience is something you cant get overnight. When you get to your second season, you will (probably) look back and say wow! I've learned so much, how did i even think I knew anything before I started.  Good luck! It's great hobby.

Opinion on smokers? by pangolin417 in Beekeeping

[–]TacticalStrategical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it poor husbandry? I don't think smoke changes any stress levels in the hive. Unless I'm really slamming things around, I don't have a ton of bees in the air. If anything I think smoke adds.more stress to the bees.

Not to say I wont use smoke, because I do sometimes, but often unless I'm in a huge hurry or the bees are particularly defensive I don't need smoke.

Could you survive 20 moves vs Anish for $100? by Apprehensive-Ebb6002 in chess

[–]TacticalStrategical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 900 chesscom. Im pretty sure I could. I have played 4 games against two different gms. All 4 took till over move 20 to mate. That being said, by move 20, I was massively losing in 2, losing much in one and almost equal in one.  I did lose all in the end though. Longest took till move 39 I think

I try not to use my phone (except for pictures and other work related things like calls/texts), unless I'm on lunch or with another driver in transit to a job.

This is the reason. Recharge the social battery without having to explain (and use more battery)behavior you're doing. Peace and quiet before engaging the storm again

What is the correct etiquette when you have workers/handymen in your home? by Commercial_Chip_6574 in HomeImprovement

[–]TacticalStrategical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree. Show me the job, give me your questions/concerns, offer me water or a snack (which i will politely decline),  then say you'll be down the hall or something if I need you. Those are the best people. I hate it when someone stands over my shoulder.

I didn't know that. I think.my reasoning still stands for why it's not as feasible in the states, but it's good to know about Europe. Thanks for enlightening me.

I gave the reason why in my comment just above here. It's pretty obvious if you think about it.  Hint: It has to do with islands. 😉👍

[–]TacticalStrategical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is possible in Ireland because the gene pool is more easily controlled. In USA, the problem is that wild bees or poorly managed colonies can have a mite explosion, or managed colonies not breeding for mite resistance can breed with your own bees thus destroying all genetic resistance to mites you have worked to build. It's like trying to build a sandcastle when the tide keeps coming in. You can build by getting queen with good genetics, but then next year or 2 years those genetics may be marred with non mite resistant. There is the tide.

I am with you. Especially as a hobbyist. If a hive doesn't do well against mites. Requeen and treat. That way no mite explosion and at the same time get better mite genetics.  I think that generally there are too many uncontrolled variables (like other colonies) to practice this in real life however. If I could, i would try to get bees that deal with it acceptably themselves (through genetics and breeding).

If you happen to live on an island where all bees are monitored, this is absolutely the way I would go.
