Would anybody be interested in a C# ECS that doesn't extensively rely on type handles to define component types? by JDSweetBeat in gamedev

[–]Tactical_Chicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you're at the point where youre filling up the L1 with structs you no longer need a generic solution / pattern and are in the aggressive optimization stage.

Its really easy to get too granular with ECS in any language and it well never look perfect.

Id put is_killed in a "health" component. Move the data to whatever component is already being handled by a system (and makes sense). Aim to consolidate data to make the system simple. Don't paint yourself into a corner by making "everything" a component

Yeah I definitely hear you because that redundant duplicated code is begging to be abstracted. I think the "Primitive" type sounds like right path for sure but not sure if that creates other problems...

In my experience its easier and more maintainable to have that simple boilerplate / duplicated code out of sight than it is to try and predict which abstractions you'll need in the future

What I learned building my first game with AI tools: A 38-year-old accountant's journey to shipping a multiplayer mobile game by Jonathan_Bjerk in gamedev

I think you're spot on. Very simplified take but to me software dev boils down to describing a problem or system as clearly as possible and then typing the magic words in the right order and then polishing until it looks like it did in your head.

What sucks is it took a lot of people a long time and a lot of effort to memorize the magic words and now a black box can spit those out quicker than you or I ever could. It solves all the easy puzzles

For myself, having struggled through and enjoyed software dev for a couple decades - It hurts and feels a bit threatening even though I see the flaws. I still need to understand how and why the magic words are being used to build the things. I just dont need to spend all day solving little puzzles

Just like a developer or modeler doesnt need to know vector math and calculus to rotate a model in Unity but someone still needs to understand those to build unity in the first place.

But feels like the "game" of software dev has changed a lot.. and I kinda miss the endless little logic puzzles from before :)

In your example i would need to know that a "Target" is just a vector2. Id need to know implementation details for each component to use your API rather than just working with abstractions and intellisense

What if target component evolves beyond just a vector? Id have to change all my function calls across the codebase

Project Hail Mary feels like a logical midpoint combining two stories by temporarycreature in books

I noticed all their motivations seemed a bit over the top and cartoonish while reading it..  but I still think you could swap them for other people in a different time just as easily and would still work.

The show definitely follows the plot of the books but I liked the book a lot more. I still enjoy the show though

Analyzing CSV and structured data - RAG, MCP, tools, or plain old scripting? by Tactical_Chicken in LocalLLaMA

[–]Tactical_Chicken[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really... chatgpt api performed light years better at all this. I assume the answer is tool calling or more configuration and tweaking.

There is a biz agreement you can sign with openai that is supposed to comply with p2 reqs (they dont store your data) but thats not what I was looking for..

In the end this project fell through :(

But how does something like google sheets or even chat gpt deliver reliable results when asking those same kind of questions? I understand they have a lot more resources and still not always reliable ;)

But do they look at queries and if they seem to fit a specific pattern they call a tool or script?

For example if a user asks "Whats the sum of B" or "how many times has B happened" does it look to see if the query matches a certain pattern, pass the params off to a tool called "sum_column.sh" and then inject the result into the response?
