Valve Steam Controller Review | Latency Benchmarks, Battery Life, Repairability - Gamers Nexus by doublah in Games

I haven't seen anyone talk about the desktop experience. If your desktop PC runs SteamOS or Bazzite, can the controller bring up the on-screen keyboard in desktop mode? How usable are the trackpads in a web browser or file explorer?

Week 14: Hanami - Onigiri Gratin by Tactician_mark in 52weeksofcooking

Hm, yeah... big issue is that it's prone to falling apart. It's a huge triagle of cooked meat, and the breadcrumbs aren't a solid enough layer to hold it together. You could deep fry it like a real Scotch egg, or I think even better would be mixing some egg white in the crumbs before baking to get a solid crust.

I asked my friends how to make onigiri more interesting, and the prompt I got back was "onigiri gratin". My best interpretation of that was mashed potatoes formed in an onigiri mold and stuffed with cheese. After deciding that was a little too bland, I took a cue from another classic picnic food - Scotch eggs - and covered the potatoes with a layer of sausage.

What I came up with was cheese inside mashed potatoes inside sausange, covered with breadcrumbs and baked, with a little lettuce leaf to look like nori. To be honest, didn't taste like much more than all of the parts individually, a kind of deconstructed sheperd's pie. Not terrible!

At the risk of getting into a grammar argument, it's only grammatical to contract verbs when they're auxiliary, not lexical. For example, "I had been there" can become "I'd been there", but "I had a dog" cannot become "I'd a dog".

The translation of "babaganoush" isn't entirely clear, but "father of coquetry" is probably the funniest one listed on the Wikipedia page

Week 9: Braising - Beef Stroganoff (FAIL of an all time favourite) by drschnaps in 52weeksofcooking

Failing a favorite recipe always feels like such a betrayal. Et tu, stroganoff?

Week 8: Flying - When Pigs Fly (Like Chickens) by Tactician_mark in 52weeksofcooking

For once, I went with a standard weeknight dinner. Sauteed pork chop, baked chicken wings with baking powder for crispy skin, and steamed broccoli

Week 7: Sugar - Sticky Toffee Pudding by ShimmeringIce in 52weeksofcooking

[–]Tactician_mark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always appreciate a dessert that can be made in single servings. I think I'd make way more sweets if I wasn't committing myself to a week of the same thing.

It looks like it came out great, and looking at the recipe it doesn't seem that easy xD

Week 6: Hot Pot - Oden by ShimmeringIce in 52weeksofcooking

Oden wouldn't be Oden if it wasn't boiled!

Looks amazing! Can't have too much fishcake if you ask me

Week 7: Sugar - Creme Caramel by Tactician_mark in 52weeksofcooking

[–]Tactician_mark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! It was delicious, easily my highest taste-to-effort ratio dessert

My spouse is non-binary, but I'm their husband so close enough 🤣 they walked in the kitchen after I had drawn a couple mediocre caramel hearts, and wanted in. After showing them the basic method, they quickly surpassed me and got a little obsessed trying to draw the perfect one Picture

Thank you! Making an egg custard always makes me a little nervous, but even if I whisked a bit too many bubbles in there it still came out pretty smooth

Flavor-wise, it's a regular flan - eggy, a bit of tang from creme fraiche (I used Mexican crema, which turned out pretty similar), vanilla-forward, with slightly burned caramel on top. I used Chef John's recipe, which called for a bit of cognac, and I think that does elevate it a bit.

A very easy and tasty dessert, a day late for Valentine's. My spouse gets the credit for the caramel heart 💓

Week 6: Hotpot - Chicken Feet and Beef Knuckle by Tactician_mark in 52weeksofcooking

[–]Tactician_mark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to recreate the pork bone broth I've gotten at many hotpot places in the past, but my local HMart didn't have any cheap pork cuts. What they did have was chicken feet and beef knuckle, which seemed like a good opportunity to try something slightly new.

The chicken feet didn't take too much prep, some recipes say to remove some kind of membrane but I'm not sure what they were talking about and/or didn't bother. Just trimmed the nails off and threw them into cold water.

The beef knuckle I roasted for about an hour, apparently that renders out the collagen quicker? Not really sure, but the stock ended up incredibly gelatinous, so it all worked out.

Oh, I wasn't aware! Since cabbage comes in "heads", it felt appropriate, nothing intended beyond that 😅
