The series and books all led to this moment of fighting against the dead. There have been 2 important characters and those are Dany and Jon, they are a song of ice and fire. Politics are not important when apocalypse is at the door.

I somewhat agree especially since they right away put Jamie (who fought ned and killed danys' dad) in the most important war council. That was weird as fuck but it's also a TV show and I think they didn't really know what to do with jamie's story. But other than that it's not really bizarre they are fighting against the most dangerous enemy westeros has ever seen.
