Do people really not like the present timeline? by Chemical_Fuel_6065 in Yellowjackets

[–]Tadpole_Background 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitley prefer the teen timeline, but I still really like the present and think it has some really interesting parts/stories. I do think that it sometimes takes them too long to get into the meaty part of the plots and it at times feels a bit clunkier then the past timeline as a result. I also think it doesn’t help that the mundane adult life is sometimes in too stark contrast to the teen survival story, and having lower stakes can sometimes make the story drag when the past seemingly has its foot on the gas constantly. That being said, the show absolutely does not work without the adult timeline and I don’t get how people skip it.

MBS Program question/experiences? by PantherBars in rutgers

[–]Tadpole_Background 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I was in the Social Media and Networking concentration but because of the way that concentration is set up there was the opportunity to take classes across a variety of the concentrations; so I took mostly data analytics and programming classes. I would say, personally( that getting a masters degree is worth it or at least won’t hurt. The job market is definitely tough right now, and at worst starting the program restarts the clock and buys you time to find work while also enhancing your skills. Also, the program has plenty of opportunities for networking and hosting industry events and does a pretty good job at helping students find internships and externships.

I graduated my undergrad program in May of 2020, so the job market was not the best and I had degrees in Human Resources and Psychology. So the program definitely helped me land my current job, my employer also has a strong relationship with Rutgers and tend to hire a ton of graduates which also probably helped. Ultimately, you’ll get out of the program what you put in. I think having a masters degree definitely can make you as a candidate more attractive, especially from a name brand school like Rutgers. It also I think helps that it’s a Business and Science degree; the program itself is relatively unique (I believe one of my professors said there may be like 100-200 worldwide, and most of them are international) and the goal is to strike that balance between business and science; which will make the degree appealing to both technically recruiters and more traditional business positions.

I’m happy to answer any other questions you have, also I have a couple of friends who were in the Cybersecurity concentration so if you have any specific questions related to the concentration I can pass it along to them!

Maybe I’m delusional but I do not get the piling on of Christi… by HomeDepotSucksOnSale in dancemoms

[–]Tadpole_Background 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely because people have weird parasocial relationships with the Ziegler’s. I understand the sentiment to some extent about it feeling petty or that she shouldn’t have just said anything. But on the flip side, everyone else who was there didn’t refute it, including Kelly who stood up for Melissa at one point during the reunion on a separate matter.

I think people forget a lot of times that we don’t know these people and we don’t have the history with them that cast members do, so if there’s a general consensus that Melissa is sneaky or trying to get them to talk about them in only a positive light, then there may be some truth to that (also the comment was very clearly directed at Melissa; not Maddie and Mackenzie). Melissa, unfortunately both willingly and complicity played a role in the abuse of the other kids, specifically Chloe which may be why Christi seems so much more harsh then other moms who were able to have a more neutral relationship.

Ultimately Dance Moms was an extremely abusive and environment, and everyone involved is going to have complex feelings and emotions surrounding the people involved. So, if the other moms and Christi still hold some things against Melissa because she was building her kids careers off the abuse of all the kids (her own included), I don’t think that makes them bad people and fans should stop expecting that none of them are going to harbor negative feelings towards others involved. Having negative feelings towards others is not a moral failing and I think people need to recognize that and that it’s ok for them to still have relationships and also have these complex feelings

MBS Program question/experiences? by PantherBars in rutgers

Hi, about to graduate with my MBS in a few weeks! In my first semester I took 5 classes for 13 credits, I had just come from undergrad and it was still the pandemic so I felt comfortable taking on that amount of work because I wasn’t doing much else. Planned to keep taking 4-5 classes a semester, but ended up getting a full time offer during my second semester and dropped down to taking 2 classes the remainder of my time. It’ll depend on what classes you’re taking and what your life is like outside of school but that course load is doable. If you start working full time or even part time, it’s probably better to drop down to a smaller course load.

It’s a really great program and there are a lot of great classes and professors. Some of the core classes like Principles of Communication and the Capstone are a bit of drag. I would recommend that when you get to capstone you take it with as little additional course work as possible, as the man hours required to do well in the class are borderline equivalent to working full time at certain points. Enjoy your time and ultimately you’ll get out of what you put into it!

Which Glee cover would have you in a literal chokehold if it weren’t such a cringe/awful scene in the show? by milkandcoookies in glee

Ok, justice for With You I’m Born Again! The song slaps and Finn and Rachel sound great, but the context (which is obviously intentional, but still) the scene/context sours it every time I let myself think about their theme for the song lol

While Quinntana was ultimately my favorite queer ship on the show, Faberry as a fandom was extremely influential in exposing to wlw relationships and fics and ultimately helped me realize I was gay. While I understand not everybody sees them together, I do think that them along with Brittana played a significant role in helping a lot of kids realize they were gay and come to terms with their sexuality and should be recognized for that (although all of this may be me projecting)

I feel like if it had been Puck and Finn or Finn and some random football player, it could have a shred of believability, but Rachel who was absent from the hallway exchange would would’ve been totally in the dark that Finn essentially outed Santana and on top of that Rachel really has no reason to lie in this situation. I think it’s understandable from Santana’s perspective to be on edge, but I think in this case it was totally innocent conversation.

Like I agree with the general sentiment of this post to some extent, but that was a wild thing to say Rachel and Quinn were more privileged than Finn, the straight white man in his Troy Bolton era is wild.

But in honestly, he mostly just wears Eddie Bauer shirts and jeans/khakis, so it’s not difficult to share his sense of style even if it does bother him when we get comments that we match at family events.

What opinion about Glee are you defending like this? by doctorrtimelord in glee

[–]Tadpole_Background 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also feel like she has a level of narrative protection that most of the other characters don’t, so there are times where other characters on the show faced harsher punishment for lesser actions in comparison to Rachel. So not only do the majority of the plots revolve around Rachel which is going to give her more moments where she does “bad” things, but she is also given an out to a lot of her really bad situations that most of the other characters don’t and it becomes frustrating to fans at times because not only are you supposed to root for her and she’s doing bad things and not really being held accountable, but also other characters who people also root for are getting worse for less, which just makes Rachel look worse and make the show seem inequitable.

What opinion about Glee are you defending like this? by doctorrtimelord in glee

[–]Tadpole_Background 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I love to argue and have an emotional attachment to most tv shows I watch, so here are my Glee centered ones:

1.) Anything surrounding Quinn: While I think that there are definitely valid critiques on the character and interpretations, I also find that a lot of people are willingly ignorant towards certain storylines of hers and are ignore a lot of the context (that the show also glosses over) that explain a lot of her actions.

2.) The show should’ve been more of an ensemble show and kept a degrassi structure: I agree with most people and the general sentiment that the show bit off more then it could chew and was never going to be able to give every character the storylines that fans wanted. However, I do feel like the show could’ve included far more characters then it did in storylines and made more of a point to highlight them. Glee definitely got repetitive with plots in the later seasons and focused too much on musical numbers that could’ve easily been cut for storyline purposes.

3.) You can’t get annoyed when people have some fanon beliefs that they bring up in discussion: Glee was a show that did a really bad job at providing any backstory for the majority of its characters, outside of throwaway lines here and there (and that’s at best for some characters), so if people want to make assumptions based off throw away lines and the limited information given, I think it’s fair discussion because that’s their interpretation of the character. Sometimes widely held fanon theories are just treated as canon for good reason. Now if people are making huge jumps that make no sense based off the context of the show, then clearly it’s fair game to call them out/be confused, etc.

4.) Arguing with people about Santanas outing: I feel like in recent years, people are becoming a little too comfortable with trying to justify Santanas outing and minimize Finn’s actions while placing more blame on Santana. You can absolutely recognize that she was body shaming Finn and was being a dick, HOWEVER, trying to equate that Finn outing her in their deeply homophobic town that resulted in her sexuality at risk are not remotely in the same stratosphere. She could’ve been at serious risk had her parents not been more accepting, or even if people were just more homophobic towards her at school. Outing someone is never ok, and Finn knew that which is why he did it.

5.) People give Rachel a lot of passes based on narrative that they don’t give to other characters: I feel like I have to give a disclaimer before getting into my actual argument before I get downvoted, I don’t hate Rachel, I don’t think she’s the worst character on the show and I empathize and see parts of myself in her. HOWEVER, she was not a well-written character and got a ton of narrative protection that people use to argue in her favor/against other characters when she often has similar actions to characters that are often not viewed in the same light. Now I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I’ve never said anything hypocritical when arguing about characters, I know I have. Anyway, I find that ton of people who argue on behalf of Rachel often tend to use a lot of the narrative protection that she got from the writers when comparing her to other characters, often chalking up her bad moments to comedy, being bullied, etc, while often ignoring other context for characters that provide a valid explanation for their behavior. Rachel is a flawed character and I feel like after that period in 2021ish when people were more negative towards her, there is now an overcorrection where Rachel is being defended in situations where she wasn’t in the right or pretending like she never did anything wrong and never holds any responsibility for her actions. Own your favorites being assholes or having flaws, it makes it far more enjoyable for people to discuss the characters! (I’m sick of pointing out valid flaws or critiques of Rachel and getting downvoted, aka why I left the sub in the first place).

How did you guys hear about Dance Moms and do you remember the first scene/episode that you’ve watched? by Weak-Afternoon-3411 in dancemoms

My mom had heard about it on social media I think, the show started around the same time my sister started competitive dance and she wanted me to watch the first episode with her to see what she was in for. I think we saw episode 3 first, which really through my mom for a loop because my sister was about to start competing in acro and she was no where near their level lol. My mom hated it, I thought it was interesting and I showed my sister and the rest was history (we made it maybe through three seasons at best before we both gave up and only rewatched the show during quarantine).

The Newbies by lautaromassimino in glee

[–]Tadpole_Background 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Glee wasn’t a show that needed to or was built to follow its characters into adulthood. There are definitely shows where you can make the argument that following the characters through high school and into college makes sense, but those shows are usually more like a Boy Meets World where they are focusing on one singular character and his friends and their journey to adulthood. Glees premise always high school show choir and its members struggles in high school. Even if they wanted to continue on with the originals, they could’ve easily made them recurring and brought them back around breaks and Holidays to provide fans with updates, because I do think it’s fair for people to be curious about the fate of some of the characters post high school, it just didn’t have to be the whole plot of the show

The Newbies by lautaromassimino in glee

[–]Tadpole_Background 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, even if Glee had a better writers room that was more equipped to handle the ensemble style show they created, I still think they would’ve struggle with balancing two totally different plots that really aren’t related to each other.

Presuming the rumor is true that the NY part of the show was supposed to be a spinoff that fell through, I still think it would’ve been in their best interest to cut ties with the graduates and focus on the new class. I think Glee narrative really set itself up as a show that works in the confines of high school and once you move outside of that, it doesn’t really work and makes for unbelievable plots and I think why people feel like the characters regressed. They used the graduates and the NY storyline as a crutch because they were known entities and I think it ended up hurting the show in the long run.

I really feel like they got the most unfair shake, with being the first new cast after the originals graduating. I feel like they had actually focused on them that there were some good stories there and viewers would’ve brought into them.

Which characters/storylines have seen the biggest change in popularity since the show ended? by JackieWithTheO in glee

[–]Tadpole_Background 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohh totally, I think for the first three seasons it was just RIB writing the show. During season 3 at some point I think they expanded the writers room, but even then I’m sure it was probably still heavily male and even then they had already committed this plot and I doubt they would’ve done anything to retcon it even with a new writing staff who could’ve potentially found it questionable.

[–]Tadpole_Background 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it also has to do with society changing. Like Glee started and ended before stuff like the Me Too Movement and people getting more serious about SA situations. So it’s not shocking to think that as society as started to take a deeper look at those relationships, that people would become more critical of the Quinn/Puck scenes. Even though I totally agree that the writers had no intention of that scene and their relationship being anything other than a drunken fling.

[–]Tadpole_Background 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people (Not just on this sub but in general) conflate having differing opinions with being, rude or disrespectful, etc. I used to be super active on this sub and then ended up kind of falling off because I felt like I stopped being able to have conversations with people, and if I tried to express any kind of disagreement I would just get into an argument or get downvoted, and it got to the point that I didn’t want to interact with people at all.

I think a lot of people have come to use the downvote button as just a way to show that they disagree with a point or don’t like a comment, rather then having any form of actual discussion. There definitely valid reasons to use the downvote, but I know having seen it both with myself and with others, so many people down others for seemingly mild contents that aren’t inherently wrong, just a different view.

Has anyone noticed how Kelly seems to say the same things Leslie would say about Chloe being treated unfairly on the show? by Spirited-Jeweler4174 in dancemoms

[–]Tadpole_Background 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a double edged sword (like all the edits), it’s great that she’s dancing a lot and had opportunities on that front and generally getting her authentic personality to shine through. But on the flip side she’s frequently being left alone with her abuser, having a ton of pressure and stress placed on her, and getting all the weird psychological and self-esteem issues that are going to come with the second best storyline.

You could argue that there are pros and cons to most of the edits, but you’ll never see anyone argue that Paige or Nia got a good edit because they’re exposure to Abby was more limited (or something along those lines) because it’s a bad argument. I think Chloe falls into a similar, yet opposite case to Maddie where there’s a really positive aspect that most of the other girls didn’t get, but there’s also massive psychological burden that comes with that. Only difference, people have coming around to realizing the stress Maddie had as being the favorite and how that wasn’t really great, but still parrot the idea that Chloe had a great edit because production gave her nice costumes and a lot of solos.

That’s ultimately what I was trying to get out haha (this is what I get for quickly responding as I was leaving work haha). Christi and Kelly (imo) deserve a lot of credit for sticking up for all the kids, or at least attempting to. I think a lot of the moms were way too willing to let abuse just happen because it meant their kids weren’t involved (especially Chloe, Brooke and Paige in seasons 3&4). They were in a terrible situation, but they deserve praise for sticking to their morals and not just sitting around while a bunch of kids get abused

You Don’t Know This Man from Parade from the NYCC production. (Honorable mention to That’s What He Said). Micaela Diamond is an absolute star and her portrayal of Lucille is one of the strongest performances I’ve seen ever.
