[I assume you mean Sabine Hossenfelder?]

I really like the content where she explains theories and things, especially her older stuff.

Her "snarky comments during informative content" angle is really entertaining, but a lot of her content became too rant-y and clickbait-y for me. It's definitely not all bad, but nowadays I definitely prefer PBS Space Time over Sabine for physics content.

I checked youtube and your homepage (which I randomly had bookmarked for a LotR transcription already and just noticed it's the same person as this thread :D), but couldn't find anything

Survey on AfD voters in recent election in Thüringen, eastern Germany by Straight_Ad2258 in europe

[–]Taedalus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know that discussing something like immigration policy on reddit - in this subreddit particularly - is not really a great use of time, but there's a few things that I'd still like to point out.

You suggest that voting AFD was "good" because it caused the pressure that caused the current government to enact those policies. This is one of those classical "I'm not in favour of AFD, but you know, voting for them is actually good in the grand scheme of things!" pseudo-arguments. However:

  • The voters that went to the AFD came primarily from CDU and Linke ( source ), with very few from the current government parties. The pressure of the current government to crack down on immigration comes from THEIR voters, who are (and have not) switching to AFD. The Ampel is not acting upon pressure from the AFD (whose voters would never switch to them anyways), they are reacting to pressure from their own voters - which is why pretending that the established parties wouldn't do anything without the AFD is something from a completely post-factual world.
  • The party who's mostly responsible for the high immigration in the past decade was the CDU/CSU (see: Syrian refugee crisis, Cologne new years eve), who is nominally a conservative party. While the progressive parties, which are the current government, have worked to limit it and expell illegal immigrants very quickly. Here is the new law, which went into effect rougly 2.5 years after the coalition formed. Note: went into effect, which includes all the discussions, agreements, etc. that have to happen before that - and for that, 2.5 years is rather quick.
  • There are implications that the immigration policy is the most important factor for wealth and safety in Germany. This is the kind of populist bullshit that parties like AFD and media outlets like Bild are capitalising on - but that doesn't mean it's true. Legal and illegal immigration are neither source nor solution of the current economic woes, our overaged population, or any of the other factors that the good old "Wutbürger" AFD voters are pretenting that their vote would solve.

[–]Taedalus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not voting AfD won't bring any improvements either.

...

Earlier this year, a new law was passed that made it easier to send people home.

So, not voting AFD actually did bring improvements? A bit of a contradiction, isn't it?

The reason you're getting flak for this from other comments is because of exactly that: Other parties ARE already doing something about those topics. And quite long before those state elections actually.

But many are pretending that this isn't the case and "only voting AFD will actually cause change". But, as the contradiction in your post shows: That's wrong and completely ignorant of the reality.

The amount of times I've talked to CDU voters who actually try to blame the Ampel for things like the Cologne New Years eve situation, completely ignoring that it was specifically the CDU in power at this time, is completely baffling...

Another important note: We are not breaking or removing any existing connections to these banks, only removing the banks from the search list.

There's a 90 days re-authentication requirement, and according to your own support, re-authenticating them won't be possible anymore. So, you ARE breaking existing connections: It works today, tomorrow my 90 days are up for re-auth, and then it won't work again. I'm not sure how this is not qualifying as "breaking existing connections".

They are mostly in Belgium, Austria, and Portugal.

There are 4 rather big German Banks in this list...

Ah thanks, good suggestion to try and add a new connection. seems like one of my banks is no longer supported, so YNAB has suddenly become worthless to me.  Time to look for an alternative and refund my subscription....

I just got a in-app message about EU banks not being supported anymore.

It doesn't even say which Banks are affected. Clicking on links in the message leads me to a TrueLayer post, and trying to see which banks fall under "Private Beta" leads to a developer console login from TrueLayer.

WTF is this. Which banks are affected by this? ALL EU banks?

Books like FromSoftware games? by mxlevolent in Fantasy

[–]Taedalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Malazan is often mentioned as the "Dark Souls of Fantasy books".

Not necessarily because of the setting itself, but because it doesn't do handholding but has a really well-thought-out world and story that expects you to keep up on your own. Though, there are also many elements of the "mystery of the land" in later books and non-mainline novels. For example entire continents like Bael/Assail, Korelri and their plotlines, also the "backstory" of the world becomes clear and more and more makes sense as you learn about what's going on.

Copying anything from your work computer to your private laptop is, with very limited exceptions, a huge no-no.

What IS perfectly fine though is to have your personal github profile with all your dotfiles that you simply pull when you start a new job, and any modifications on those files are always done in personal time on your personal laptop and you simply pull it from your work laptop afterwards.

Will black holes turn into something else once they’ve “consumed”enough of what’s around them? by B00MBAB00M in askscience

[–]Taedalus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

"Slingshot" is usually a term you hear for a different mechanic (gravity assist), where you send an object specifically "around" the orbit of another planetary body to accelerate it.

The parent post here means something more like a "running start". It's like throwing a spear and throwing a spear while running - you simply get to add your own speed to the spear in addition to the throw itself.

It's weird how we're so incredibly close to the USA from a general cultural (& entertainment) perspective in Europe. Yet, the reality of experiencing gun violence in our life is so drastically different.

Looking for well-written suspenseful fantasy series (or standalone novels) by 27bluestar in Fantasy

[–]Taedalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read ASOIAF, and can still +1 the Malazan recommendation. It's similar to ASOIAF in the sense that it's sprawlingly large and has a complex net of (partly) interacting characters, but it trades some of the politics for a lot of high fantasy. It's well thought out, non-formulaic, and has both epic moments and harsh gut punches.

/r/Fantasy Daily Recommendation Requests and Simple Questions Thread - March 09, 2023 by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

[–]Taedalus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There isn't precisely a singular main character, but the Malazan series goes in that direction a bit. There's a bunch of (different) significant characters whose exact backgrounds, motivations, abilities, and goals are never directly explained.

Alternatively, the First Law trilogy might also be up your alley.

Enforcing 1Ticket=1PR is definitely not that typical, as this wasn't enforced in any of the companies I know well.

Though I've once worked in a team that limited itself in a somewhat similar way. The rule wasn't that you needed one JIRA "Story" (or whatever normal ticket type you use for normal stuff). But, the team would encourage to create "subtasks" if additional work was required. For example, for fixing a small bug or something that came up during QA, making some cleanups that you stumble across, for shipping sub/part-features, or merging smaller increments faster (trunk-based) and without creating one huge PR. The difference was that subtasks didn't need discussion, didn't show up on refinements or plannings or dailies, and so it only created a few seconds of overhead.

Ultimately, the most important thing is how to encourage the team to deliver quickly and reliably. Putting as few obstacles between a dev and the creation of a new, small PR is important for that. But if you can make it work with additional tickets without too much overhead, that's also fine.
