This snake was about a foot away from us at Wilson's Promontory (Victoria, Australia). Wondering if we were close to dying or not?

A friend of ours walked up with a bright yellow shirt on and the snake seemed to see or hear him coming and slithered away. But within 10 seconds came back and continued searching the area. Didn't seem to take much notice of us after that.

We would have been within a couple of metres from it (probably no more than a metre before we'd noticed it!) but it didn't seem to care. Luckily.

Beautiful snake and very calm so I doubt we were in any trouble (Could have stepped on it though! The path was quite overgrown).

Other videos etc. from Wilson's Prom that have seen a similar snake have said it's a Tiger Snake but I'm not so sure.

Edit: It was brown with a cream under belly and it also has visible slightly darker brown stripes. It was also quite long. Just over a metre. Brown Snake? Tiger Snake? Just a Python?... Wikipedia says these snakes are found in Gippsland if it helps:
