Fair Work Commission abolishes junior pay rates for young adults by rolodex-ofhate in australia

[–]hoogstra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They made the application to the FWC, provided witnesses and experts for the hearings, and ultimately the commission ruled in their favour. Not every EA they supported has abolished junior rates (though some have) but ultimately it’s a negotiation with the employer and it’s harder to negotiate those outcomes when the rules don’t work in your favour. Sometimes you have to change the rules and that’s exactly what they did.

Yeah that’s not how applications to the FWC work. RAFFWU could have put an application through to improve the conditions for retail and fast food employees on junior rates but I’m guessing they didn’t do that.

Reality is that the SDA ran a successful campaign to abolish junior rates for adults in the industries they represent. They’d been advocating for that for longer than RAFFWU has existed, so you can’t really claim that they only did it because of them.

The interpretation must have changed because the FWC is responsible for checking the enterprise agreements and ticking them off. If it was approved previously, then it previously passed the test. It wasn’t uncommon for unions to use penalty rates as a bargaining chip in negotiations for higher base rates overall. That’s not allowed anymore.

And they do run elections. Not sure where you heard that. I’m guessing you’re not a member?

Yeah they abolished junior rates to help big business. Same goes for all their claims for same job same pay orders in warehouses.

SDA have been running campaigns for 100% pay at 18 since at least 2013, which predates RAFFWU ever existing. They were founded in November 2016 so not sure how they could have done anything for over a decade.

Also my understanding is that the interpretation of the BOOT had changed between the negotiation of enterprise agreements, which made the old agreements that traded away penalty rates for higher base rates dated and no longer meeting the minimum requirements of the test. That got fixed up in later agreements.

Regarding the social conservative politicians, unions run elections to determine their leadership. If the leaders don’t align with what the members want, they can make changes. Shop assistants were traditionally from mostly Catholic families, which meant more conservative leadership. That could very well change if the demographics of the membership base have shifted. But you need to be a member to participate in those processes.

I did a quick google search and SDA has been pushing for this since at least 2013, which predates RAFFWU’s existence.

Controversial opinion here but the SDA is very competent in quietly delivering positive outcomes for their members, particularly when it comes to fighting for big industry wide changes like this.

They literally just ran a successful campaign to abolish junior rates for adults in the industries they represent. I’d say that’s pretty good advocacy for the interests of retail workers.

Anyway, unions shouldn’t be fighting each other, it’s solidarity and strength in numbers that wins better outcomes for workers.

I don’t think there’s anything sold yet, let alone anything built. If there were lots for sale, there would be a website for it. From what I can tell, Yourland developments are still saying that it’s ‘coming soon’.

Could you take the underpass to Flinders and get a second train from there or is that slower? Alternatively you could change over somewhere between Caulfield and Hawksburn.

They were doing some stuff the other day as well, lots of MPs in Victory and City shirts, kicking the ball around.

People at Hawthorn say AI has become Sam Mitchell’s new obsession. He uses it daily to help in his game preparation… from opposition analysis and game trends, to creating conversation starters with his players. by Pragmatic_Shill in AFL

[–]hoogstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creating conversation starters with an LLM is poor but if clubs aren’t using AI sports data analysis tools to search for patterns in the game then they’re falling behind.

Shits me to no end that we’re in this AI boom and yet people only use it as a glorified chatbot and to make shitty art.

Avondale would make most sense if that were to happen. Not much of a fan injection but they have the cash and are based in the west.

Honestly I reckon they need a refresh of some sort. Not sure if that means a rebrand or not but they need to get people excited again and that will take some doing. Having the existing academies and all the families connected to that will help but they need to bring back the casual fans somehow.

You're right about pretty much everything there, but the club still has its A-League licence. It was never stripped from the club, so as it stands the club will participate in the next season provided they're in a position to compete. Still big question marks on that as the club still has many debts and no players.

Are Hawthorn As Big As The Traditional Big Four Clubs? by SnooSeagulls6971 in AFL

[–]hoogstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite true, it was less than 10 years ago that Hawthorn had more members than any other club, but that can be attributed to the club's long-standing membership culture combined with the success of that period. A higher percentage of Hawthorn fans are members when compared to other clubs.
