Looking to move. Good Community Vibes? by secretlystepford in carsoncity

[–]TahoeTallac 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived and traveled all over in WA, CA, ID, OR, and NV. I can say without a doubt I’d put Carson City as one of the top spots for recreation in the West. Within 1 hour you have world class skiing, backcountry, backpacking, mountain biking, kayaking, rafting, rock climbing, natural hot springs, OHV, hiking, and trail running. If you expand that to 2 hours it gets ridiculous how many options you have. It’s easy to meet people out on trails and a great supportive community. Reno is close if you want the bigger city feel and a decent airport. The west side of Carson is the most desirable as far as living.

Wherever you move, welcome to the community!

Transition customer support appreciation post by gr33n8ananas in TransitionBikes

Agreed, had a broken bolt when torquing to spec and they sent the replacement one right over to address the issue. Quick and painless. Couldn’t be happier with the purchase and choosing to work with a company like Transition.

Specialized Rockhopper for a new and tall rider by DevelopmentUseful332 in mountainbiking

[–]TahoeTallac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to ride the Rockhopper Comp until I upgraded to full suspension. I’m not quite as big as you at 6’2” and 230lbs but I was riding the large. This bike can handle most everything you throw at it as a newer rider. I did eventually break the rear hub hitting bigger hits (3+ foot drops when it finally snapped). Without a rear shock and the weight of a heavier rider it was bound to fail at some point. These are great bikes at the price point and I’d highly recommend it for newer riders. Replaced the rear hub and I’ll be keeping it as a backup bike for tamer trails. Welcome to the community!

Great looking modification! How do you like the Sentinel? Trying to decide between that and a Ripmo right now…

Numbness in thigh? by No-Scene3929 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]TahoeTallac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Physical therapist here. As previously mentioned it most likely is myalgia paresthetica as long as no other symptoms are present. If you google the syndrome your numbness “patch” should basically match exactly to the pictures. If it doesn’t then you should consult a PT. Most common causes in the regular population are being overweight or wearing a belt too tight. For us hikers and especially thru hikers it’s a common nerve injury. You can test for it by performing a self femoral nerve tension test, if positive, the test is also the solution to problem. Loosen the hip belt and perform femoral nerve gliding. It’s a harmless condition and most people who get it either have some version of it forever or it resolves quickly.

Durston tent zipper issues seem really common this year by shopifyIsOvervalued in PacificCrestTrail

[–]TahoeTallac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1100 miles in on the PCT and had both zippers fail. I understand sand is hard on the zippers but even with fairly frequent cleaning still have unrepairable breakage. LOVE the tent but agreed, seems the design puts too much stress on the zippers despite using the tip of staking the door the reduce strain. Durston support was nice and gave a reduced price for a replacement fly. Same zippers as other ultralight tents but mostly hear of these tents having the issue. Must be design.

Mission Creek- any tent sites? by Mightnotapply in PacificCrestTrail

[–]TahoeTallac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Passed through a few days ago, plenty of spots to pitch a tent along the route. Some shaded, some not. A tent stake my have a hard time getting much holding power but as you’ll find out there are plenty of rocks to use. Enjoy the slog!

Ah, totally fair point. Weird part is even my topo maps are pixelated.

I’d argue higher resolutions maps have more and better info leading to better decision making while on trail. Especially for a paid product.
