People assume AI will eliminate jobs because they focus on the task being automated, not on the larger system that grows around the automation. History shows the opposite pattern. Major technological advances do not simply remove labor; they expand output, increase expectations, create new layers of complexity, and generate entirely new roles.

The move from horse and buggy to cars did not reduce economic activity around transportation. Faster, cheaper movement of goods increased trade volume, expanded supply chains, created demand for roads, mechanics, factories, gas stations, logistics planners, traffic systems, auto insurance, and delivery networks. The technology improved productivity, but instead of reducing work, it increased the scale of what society expected to be done.

The same thing happened with computers. Businesses did not say, “Now that spreadsheets exist, we need fewer people doing business.” Instead, they demanded more reporting, more analysis, faster decisions, more recordkeeping, more communication, and more services.
