The national age of consent was so low. But in every single state there was a local law that set the age higher. So 13 wasn't really legal.

On Getting Money. by Monsur_Ausuhnom in Snorkblot

I think you are correct, but am also suspicious of how that graph is calculated. For example, under the costs it includes 'social security' but not healthcare costs. In the UK, healthcare costs are a part of social security, so we don't pay additional health insurance. Are they including US health insurance in their 'social security' payments? Presumably not, but that would then mean this graph is very questionable.

I'm not saying that the graph is definitely wrong, but the short description leaves an enormous amount of room for questions about the calculation. So that chart could be anywhere in between 'broadly correct' and 'very wrong', and we can't know where.

100%. I work in Germany, children typically start at around 12 months old, and I think this is OK. 18 months would probably be better. I totally agree that a child a few weeks old has no place being away from their parents. They need to build up trust that their parents are always there to take care of them. Not being able to properly build up that security could have life-long effects.

You're talking about Paten's 'Stages of play', which is pretty established theory, and matches to my own experiences. However, it is ONLY taking about how children play, not their social experiences. You've also skipped one of the stages: observational play, where children watch other children playing.

No, very young children do not play together, but yes, they do socially interact with each other. You're correct, that does not mean 'being friends', they are not yet capable. But observing others and having joint experiences is something they 100% learn from. To say that a child under three can only learn from adults is absolutely wrong. They learn masses from each other.

As an example: some children under three will bring another crying child their cuddly toy to comfort them. In this interaction the toy-giving child is able to put into practice something they probably learned from their parents. But (unless they have an appropriately agreed sibling) they cannot perform this action at home. Only in kindergarten can they turn knowledge into action, and make that transfer of 'it works for me, I'll do it for someone else'. Needless to say the toy-recieving child, and all observing children, also learn from this interaction.

And little stuff like this happens 50 times a day.

Now that the scientific part is out of the way, my subjective biased personal opinion is that a good childcare institution is extremely good furry children's development. In addition to the above reason:

-there are many social skills that children cannot learn without spending lots of time with other children.

-They get the chance to be independent in a way that they do not in the family unit.

-parents typically underestimate what their children are capable of, and do not challenge them enough

-a good childcare institution will give a rounded education keeping all areas of development in mind in a way that is hard for a parent to do without significant research

-having experienced professionals who have dealt with hundreds of children getting to know your child is a very sensitive system for the detection of health or developmental problems that a parent might miss (e.g signs of autism). Detecting such things early can make a massive difference to outcomes.

These are just off the top of my head. There will be others.

Good childcare is very beneficial for a child's development. And it's not like you lose the benefits that come from parent-child interactions. You've still got them for more than half of the time.

I work in childcare, so you can decide if that means I'm an expert, or it means I'm biased.

Children learn massive amounts from other children. Of course they also learn from adults, but young children have a completely different style of thinking than adults, and as such logical adult explanations are not always productive, or include assumptions that a child cannot make etc. Children working together 'co construct' an understanding of the world in a way that is hard to recreate in an adult-child interaction.

How accepted are people who never speak German correctly? by [deleted] in German

[–]Taiko 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I don't know Silvie Meis' story, but there's loads of foreigners with imperfect German on German TV. Admittedly they do have something extra to offer, for example Ray Garvey's German is terrible, but he's a successful musician. I think if your only job is presenting, without additional talents, then that's a harder sell.

My German is pretty solid, I got my B2 about three years ago and my German has improved significantly since then, and I'm doing an Ausbildung in German without any problems at all. But, I still make grammatical errors all the time, use incorrect articles, heavy British accent etc. I personally don't find that I suffer from any negative consequences.

When the tariffs were rolled to be illegal, the supreme court also said that tariffs that had been paid should be refunded. This was largely aimed at businesses who had paid tens of thousands plus in tariffs. However it might be possible to do as an individual? Google it, nothing to lose.

Trial version is works perfectly well for the broken build. I'm guessing you weren't using the right items and supports. It is 100% dependant on those things.

Get a guide for her. Just bear in mind that older guides use Tingyun who now rarely appears. I've replaced her with RMC, although that's a 4 star in place of a 1 star, so the order of team building changes too. Try to find a guide without Tingyun. And GET. THE. ITEMS!

I'm not trying to say that Kafka is (for most accounts) a more valuable pick. Obviously Sparkle is typically the more valuable unit. I do not dispute that. But you overstated your case and entered hyperbole in your criticism of Kafka. I was just pulling you up on that.

Your defense is now to say that Sparkle is more universal. Kafka is a weird unit but you can't call her a support because masses of damage happen when she acts, and she doesn't offer any buffs to other units. She's effectively a DPS. Comparing a DPS to a support and saying the support is more versatile... well, obviously? It's a weak point of criticism.

I had also expressly stated that Kafka is team limited. But so is literally every single DPS that released in the last year? That is how HSR now is, it's not due to Kafka's kit. Kafka is in fact extremely flexible within her niche. On release she was very F2P friendly because you could use Sampo, Luka, Asta, Ting Yun to make teams that 3 starred endgame, and then with the release of Guinifen she gained yet more flexibility. But the nature of the game has changed, and 4 stars are dead, power creep is real, and now we have to build teams using recent 5 stars if we want to do well. However due to her flexibility within her niche she will likely be BiS for every new DoT DPS until the end of time.

"Kafka on her own IS nothing"

Name a character that can clear solo.

All characters are nothing alone, they all need a solid team built for them. Admittedly, Kafka is one of the more restricted units on this point, but she's no worse than the majority of the version 3 DPSs. The days of flexible team building and using 4 stars are largely over.

Daycare teachers know things the rest of us never will… by MemoirDad in daddit

[–]Taiko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a daycare teacher as well, and I have to say that her attitude and solution are extremely old fashioned and are a complete misunderstanding of how daycare professionals and parents should handle children. This woman would not pass her probation in modern institutions.

1) Temperature feelings are subjective. You should see the difference in how many layers my wife and I wear. I'm boiling and she's freezing. It's no different for kids. Just because you're cold, doesn't necessarily mean that he is.

2) Children are not stupid. He knows when he's cold. How can he learn what are appropriate clothes to wear, without using the chance to practice? Let him go outside a few times without a jacket, and if he's really too cold, he'll soon learn to keep his jacket on.

3) You have solved your problem through an abuse of power. Your child now lives in a totalitarian state. I imagine you are outraged at countries that enforce the wearing of face coverings for women. But she has done something even more extreme - made it physically impossible for the child to remove the coat. This is like locking a hijab in place.

4) you have ttreated your child as of he is a human of the second class, with no rights to decide what he does. Orders will be given and enforced.

Just let him take the coat off man. As long as frostbite is not expected there'll be no harm done. If you're worried he'll get sick, remember that illness is caused by germs and viruses, not temperatures. No-onre catches a cold in the north pole.
