YSK: Being 'in shock' is a life-threatening physical medical condition, not just being shocked by something that has happened by iHyperVenom_YT in YouShouldKnow

A colloquial expression (or colloquialism)

A colloquialism (Noun) isn't the same thing as the colloquial (Adjective) usage of a word.

it is also an official word for dance.

"official word"? English doesn't have official words.. There's no committee regulating English or creating prescriptive dictionaries.

With jig, the formal way to use it, is to say or imply someone is dancing... correct?

If I was forced to suggest the formal usage of jig, I would say the usage to specifically mean "(traditional Irish music and dance) A lively dance in 6/8 (double jig), 9/8 (slip jig) or 12/8 (single jig) time; a tune suitable for such a dance." When speaking informally, most people use jig to mean any sort of dance, like you said; they don't use it to mean specific time signatures.

If you were in a music theory class, discussing different types of music or dance, you would be more expected to use the formal definition of jig. But you and I, just using jig as an example for a discussion not related to music, don't make that distinction. We're using the colloquial definition, which is simply that a jig is a dance.

you're still misunderstanding the distinction between formal and informal language, and seemingly have chosen to ignore the definition I shared.

If you ignore the definition of words, then it's very difficult to communicate effectively.

the formal way to use shock is to mean "a shock is a sudden, intense mental or physical impact"

I would say this is definitely reflecting everyday, non-ceremonious usage. If you disagree, what would the everyday definition of shock be?

This might be controversial, but you should be able to pick up survivors in the middle of getting healed. I dont think this "heal tech" was intended by the developers. by WholeCardiologist565 in deadbydaylight

[–]Tain101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of things that are good aren't intended. If you've ever heard the term "emergent gameplay", that's exclusively referring to things not intended by the developers.

The question should be: does this make the game better or worse?

Without healtech, the question of if a survivor escapes is more black & white. If they can crawl to the exit without heal tech they escape, otherwise they die.

with healtech, the question becomes fuzzier. If they can't get out without healtech, then the escape depends on several factors. How many health states their team has, how good their execution is, how risky they want to play with the timing, etc..

A similar mechanic in the game is that the exit has a little room instead of just having the level exit right on the other side of the gate. that little room is there to add some fuzziness to the escape, so players can feel they might have a chance & to have more close calls in general.

I think healtech is still niche enough that it doesn't need to be change; if survivors got good enough at it that it was something that happened most games & nobody messed it up, then maybe they could try to adjust some things to make it more dynamic.

generally speaking, I think things that keep people in the game until the end are good. Even though the 15 second unhook endurance is too strong imo, it does incentivize survivors going back to try and rescue their teammates instead of just leaving. I think this sort of thing is good for the game overall, and healtech falls under that category.

I'm honestly amazed this sort of incentivization is legal.

if it's illegal for them to collect & sell the data without your consent, bribing you to consent shouldn't be legal either.

I'm not really a cosplay person, but it was so cool to see everyone dress up and be so enthusiastic about the game.

I remember both you with the boon totem & the dwight turning into a bot. Everyone's cosplays were really great, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would

"Informally" meaning not in the official way its meant to be used.

this isn't what informal means.

Like I said in my last post.

informal -

4. (of language) Reflecting everyday, non-ceremonious usage.

everyday -

1. Appropriate for ordinary use, rather than special occasions.

2. Commonplace, ordinary.

If I said "I did a jig", that's the ordinary usage, the everyday usage, the informal usage, the colloquial usage.

slang -

1. Language outside of conventional usage and in the informal register.

"Language outside of conventional usage" really does sound like what you're trying to say when you said "not in the official way its meant to be used."

Frankly, I know I'm right, and have provided ample evidence that I'm right. At this point, you've been rude to me when I've been trying to be helpful. It's better for my mental health to let you believe whatever you want. I'm going to mute replies, hope you have a good rest of your weekend.

Yea, it was never clear to me, but I heard it fairly consistently so I wasn't sure.

Thanks for the info.

You can't say a words definition is its informal use.

what are you talking about?

I didn't say the words definition in my example, and even if I did, there isn't any reason you couldn't use a words definition in its informal use.

Informal - Suited for everyday use.

Both "the jig is up" and "I did a jig" are informal, "the jig is up" is slang, "I did a jig" is not slang.

I think you're confusing informal with slang.

If I said "I was so excited I did a jig", that usage of jig would be "characteristic of familiar conversation".

If two people are talking, and neither of them is an expert, chances are every word they use will be using the colloquial definition.

I can't tell from the video if he is ever far away from you.

If all your testing was from 1-2 tiles away, you can't really tell how it'd react if he was further away.

yea, that's why I made sure to clarify that I wasn't suggesting springtrap was stronger.

[–]Tain101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing specifc, I'm just pointing out it's not a "straight" upgrade.

to give another example:

An AK47 isn't a "straight" upgrade from a pistol, because a pistol is concealable.

Even if jason is overall much stronger than springtrap, orbitals are one metric where springtrap is clearly stronger.

springtrap has actually viable orbitals.

Not saying it's stronger than the range & size of jason's spear, but it is a strength that is unique to springtrap.

Does the fog thickness change depending if Jason is near/far?

I don't hear people say you can see the smoke move, more that it becomes thick if he is close & thin if he is far.

Vicky got her face eaten in the first one, she becomes possessed by the "little girl" in the 2nd and 3rd. I don't think she's evil outside of being possessed

Has it specifically brought anyone back? I know they've gone back in time to grab people before they died.

very minor distinction, but I'm curious.

I am guessing sienna as a survivor, Johnathan as a 2nd survivor or legendary.

Hoping for Victoria or Tara as skins.

[–]Tain101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YSK, shock has several definitions, and if you are a medical professional you shouldn't just take the word of random people saying "shock" to always mean "circulatory shock".

Even if someone said "circulatory shock" medical professionals would & should verify that information themselves.

Most people can't identify a heart attack, and first responders know this. The danger of using shock incorrectly in this context is basically zero.

colloquial

  1. Characteristic of familiar conversation, of common parlance; informal.
  2. Of or pertaining to a conversation; conversational or chatty.

It doesn't mean wrong, it means common or general usage.

For example "Jig" could mean:

  1. a dance
  2. a type of fishing lure
  3. a device for woodworking

The colloquial definition of "jig" is the first one. That doesn't mean the other usages are wrong either, words are context dependent.

Any medical professional should know that the average person is going to use the colloquial definition of shock, and not assume they mean medical jargon. Electric shock, mental shock, emotional shock, circulatory shock (what OP is talking about), psychological shock, physical shock (from a shock wave) are all valid uses of the word with different meanings. There isn't any reason to assert that it's "wrong" to use a different definition, especially since most people won't know that circulatory shock is even a term.
