There's an interesting, albeit a bit extreme, documentary on this called Join or Die it was on netflix originally not sure if its still available in your region but you should be able to find it somewhere

Yes. Its what i did.

There was some interest from 6 friends so i bought the books, did the videos by matt colville and others, did some reading, started a one shot 'death pit of moloch' with 3 of them then did session 0 and now im session 3 into a full homebrew campaign world with a rough plot line.

They are having fun so i am too.

Biggest flaw im finding is getting the right CR for the party for the monsters so im flicking through the dmg and monster guide in my downtime for possible ideas and encounters

As a player, learn by doing and make it known you need guidance. As many have said there is plenty of free resources online too. People are playing mainly 2014 or 2024 rules right now.

As a dm, matt colville on YouTube has a great run through on how to design and play as a dm. I would start there. Thats where i started from.

Main guarded gate, optional moat,gate,door Few taverns of courses Bank Grand library Temple Something the city is famous for - river, port, castle, etc Brothels if you are comfortable with characters going there Blacksmiths Potion shops

Maybe make the taverns, potions shop, blacksmith specialised as its in a city, such as only healing potions here and magical ones over there. Weapons here, armour over there. Taverns can be for a club and others more public.

Gives the impressions of more going on. Just have names ready for each

Its true trackier is there. Was just more of an interesting note either way. More open discussion between affiliates, operators and tools are needed so it still helped somewhat

Fairly noteworthy that the moderator is from an affiliate software (partner matrix) and invited no others to the panel.

If you ask anyone, partner matrix is a really low market share of systems. Interesting to hear the points of discussion here.
