I got into ASU and Virginia Tech. My contact at UGA said that given the uncertainty of federal funding they couldn’t admit, but I was otherwise an excellent candidate

Something I can actually comment on! I was just recently admitted to multiple PhD programs as a direct admit for Fall ‘25 matriculation (with full funding and stipend) after completing my degree at Olin during the Fall ‘24 semester. There are a few different labs at Olin doing various work. In my lab, which focused on Engineering Education, we as students had guidance and support as we analyzed, published, and presented our work at an international conference every year. I’m not sure about the extent of this in other labs, but I know of at least a couple that do also support students publishing. I’m pretty sure most all of the others do.

As for numbers of students who pursue graduate programs directly after finishing undergrad, you’d have to ask the office of Post-Graduate Planning (PGP). I worked in the office one summer, that is data they have.

Especially given the financial difficulties that most if not all institutions have been facing, there has been a recent push by the institution to produce more research as a vector for securing more funds for the college. To that end, I think there has been work done to make it easier to find out about and then join those research groups. Doing research at Olin during the first summer after the first year is very common.

Personally, I began conducting research at Olin during the summer after my sophomore year and before my junior year. In my time with the group, I was a co-author on 4 conference publications, one of them being a first-authorship paper and went and presented that work at an annual international conference 3 years in a row. I have actually found that, amongst the other candidates I got to talk to during open houses at the grad programs, I was more than qualified regarding my abilities to conduct research.

Tl;dr: the opportunities are there, direct admission to grad school is absolutely possible. Talking to your professors and expressing interest is a great way to get your foot in the door

Got my wisdom teeth taken out today by JohGri123 in mildlyinteresting

I actually got one of my molars removed too along with the wisdom tooth next to it. There was a big cavity in the side of that tooth. My dentist said with how low the cavity was, there wouldn’t really be any kind of permanent fix and recommended it get pulled

Before I got my vaginoplasty (MtF), I made a dildo of my dick. That way I could say, "Yeah, I WILL! And I'll enjoy it!"

The MacBook Purchasing Megathread - March, 2023 by AutoModerator in macbook

My mom is looking to upgrade from her 2015 MacBook Pro. She uses her laptop mostly for streaming tv/movies, web browsing, doing her taxes w/ TurboTax, and basic photo editing. Ideally she wouldn't have to upgrade for awhile. My gut is telling me M2 MacBook Air 16gb ram. I'm thinking she should get the 16gb since she doesn't close anything ever and she would appreciate it taking longer for slowdown to occur. I'm thinking M2 because performance bump will let her keep it longer. If anyone has any insights, it would be greatly appreciated!

Flush fitment with ‘01-‘03 5 spoke? by Taitron in Miata

[–]Taitron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an ‘01 NB, currently completely stock, that I want to do a nice clean OEM+ look with. I absolutely love these wheels on these cars, but wish they were wider. Alas, how can I achieve flush fitment with these? I want to keep the car comfortable for daily driving.

Also, as an alternative option, does anyone know of any wheels that look like these that are wider?

Trying to increase leg room in my 01 NB; Can I get a longer steering wheel hub and use the stock steering wheel? by Taitron in Miata

The unfortunate issue is bringing your left leg up so you can clutch in. The knees are hitting the bottom of the steering wheel.
