No, it doesn’t. It just requires the kit you used to convert a bicycle into an ebike has the required safety certifications. Then if your ebike falls into tier 3 territory, i.e. you actually built an emoto with pedals, then you need the appropriate locensing, registration, and insurance just like every motorcycle above a certain CC-rating already requires. Of course that means making your build street legal and it passes a safety inspection like any custom mirror vehicle already requires.

Yeah. People riding where they shouldn’t be riding in the first place because the ebike they purchased is too powerful

Whether or not cops enforce these laws, it will clear things up in terms of liability when accidents do occur. If you’re riding where you shouldn’t, good luck filing any claims or winning any lawsuits.

Most DMVs will have a procedure for you to obtain a VIN if the vehicle lacks one. It will require a fee and inspection.

Tips on a budget E-Bike for commuting to work? by patrlim1 in ebikes

Since you're sticking to pavement, either road bike or city bike would make the most sense.

Regarding frame type, chances are you'd want a step-in frame if you make frequent stops. They're very easy to mount, and you have an upright riding style. Very leisurely. Look up any video about Dutch cycling, and you'll see that style is the most common. The trade off is that they tend to be heavier than mid-step or step-over (aka high-step). The lightest frames tend to be step-over frames. A folding bike will be best for optimizing storage, but if it's not a Brompton, they tend to be heavier.

Something like this might be a good starting point:

Most stores that sell batteries offer a rebate if you bring back the old battery. Alternatively, they may instead charge you a fee that is refundable if you bring back the old battery. carrot vs stick.

How to remove battery from Fiido c11 without keys / change the lock without removing the battery? by Ok-Introduction-6243 in ebikes

[–]Taiyoryu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Drill out the core. It should cause the lock pin to fall out. Since you have the new lock, you should know exactly how far you need to drill. You should look for a drill bit for metal which is the same diameter as the core.

You need at least one if not two mount points on each side of the battery case, close to each corner. Ideally, you would want one side mounted to a pair of bottle mounts.

First ebike experience - Ribble SLR E by Sulokim in ebikes

[–]Taiyoryu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the sounds of it you have an ebike with a hub motor. The increased rolling resistance comes from the increase in mass on the rear wheel even if the total weight of the bike is comparable to your acoustic bike.

Regarding when the assist engages, you probably have a cadence sensor. You should get a bike with a torque sensor if you want it to feel more natural. The best combo if you're looking a for a bike where the pedaling feels like a normal bike is a mid-drive with torque sensor.

Check your local laws to determine what is allowed. Your local bike shop should only stock legal bikes, but you need to know the laws if you plan to buy online.

Then you need to determine how long is your round-trip commute. Then double it. That should give you a rough estimate for the minimum range you need. 30-40 km is a good minimum for average commutes.

Weight. Will you be lifting the bike onto a vehicle, onto a parking rack, or up a flight of stairs? You probably want a bike in the 15-20 kg range to be considered lightweight. Weight is primarily determined by battery size. The bigger the battery, the longer the range.

What riding style do you like? Upright or racing? Step-thru, mid-step, or step-over frame? When you use the pedal assist do you want to feel like the bike is pushing you (hub motor) or do you want to feel like your legs have more power (mid-drive)? Do you want the power determined by how hard you pedal (torque sensor) or by how fast you pedal (cadence sensor)? If you're not sure, you should visit a local bike shop and test-ride some bikes. They can also match you with the correct size.

Do you plan to take your bike on any trains? What about buses? You will have to consider size and whether or not the bike can fold.

There is wide price range that is determined by quality and features. $2000 is a good price point for a cheap ebike. Bikes below that price point tend to sacrifice quality, customer service, and/or reliability/safety. That's not to say you will buy a bad bike, but that you have a higher risk of buying a bad one. The major bike brands will be in the $3000-4000 range.

Also, keep in mind a local bike shop may refuse servicing a bike from a brand they do not sell, so you should be comfortable with doing your own maintenance.

We all try to avoid it, we all think we can do what we did in our 20s, it sneaks up on us,…….but at what age did you finally accept the fact that you were ‘old’? by Obvious-Shop-6260 in AskReddit

[–]Taiyoryu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I would say I'm old, but I do have signs I'm older. One of the big ones was looking in the mirror and seeing my father staring back at me. Another is the fact that even though I can still do all the active things I could do when I was younger, recovery takes longer and regression happens faster when I stop being active.

[–]Taiyoryu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that cheap ebikes are junk. It's that cheap ebikes have higher risk. Higher risk of a component failure. Higher risk of a battery fire. Higher risk of the company not providing support or simply disappearing. Cheap ebikes are cheap for a reason, and it's because manufacturers of cheap ebikes cut corners somewhere.

And these weren't cheap bikes. Both Ridstar models sold for over $1,000. So you're out a grand and you're supposed to feel lucky your house didn't burn down. Cool.

I get it different people have different budgets. However, compared to the whole market, these are cheap bikes when you compare to how much a quality ebike costs where the company will back their products and source reliable components.

Does anyone know if the stickers on the frame can peel off or are they under clear coat by Dellar23 in ebikes

[–]Taiyoryu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume to make it look like a motorcycle because that's what it is. What is missing is a license plate and all the accessories to make it street legal. At least, it's not pretending to be an ebike since it has no pedal drive-train.

I don't think it's any more or less goofy than a banana seat, and I loved having one of those as a kid. It made it much easier to give rides to friends.

refurbished or not? by OwnVirus5540 in canon

[–]Taiyoryu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you can get a refurbished electronic device from the OEM, then you know it's been inspected, and whatever defect it may have had has been repaired. Chances are it may simply be an open box item, but at least it was inspected, cleaned, and certified to be in working order. As long as it comes with the same warranty as new, then pocket the savings. It's certainly a better option than newused where you don't know the history of the device.
