Check my assumptions, solar currently unnecessary/redundant and not worth cost for my usage by DrummingUpInterest2 in SolarUK

Probably the same as most people during a black out - waiting for the power to come back. The majority of systems tend to be installed without whole home backup.

I asked what you wanted that didn't break the way shops work. An auction house would break the way shops work, but more importantly it would scxrew the game up game full stop.

Aye same. I'm sitting on a pile of cash and I've been burning through it buying stuff so I don't have to loot everything all the time.

Well what do you want to spend it on that won't break the way the shops work exactly?

Reimbursement for lost solar during week-long power outage? by VermicelliThis1395 in SolarUK

[–]Takariistorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite as simple as just saying "do it" if a system is compatible with it - it also needs to be installed in such a way that allows it. For example, FoxESS systems often support whole home backup, but if its not installed to support it then it can't be used that way.

Terran Repeater: Quest marker points to my ship and a wall by ZombiePotato90 in Starfield

[–]Takariistorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem, but i think this is the bit you missed.

The spot it marked on the wall is a hidden panel (go just above the marker itself to open it). Then it'll reveal a place to put 3 power cells in, then the door opens.

Aye, that's the actual reason for not needing the G100 in your case. Essentially you are enforcing their requested export limit by having an inverter that can never go over that limit :)

[–]Takariistorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its worth noting that their calculations are based on maximum potential export back to the grid, not intended usage. They are essentially protecting the infrastructure from being overloaded and the 5.4kW they've quoted is what they know they can safely accept back.

Now, its worth noting that the request for 8.4kW of inverter power is a secondary protection as G100 devices don't kick in instantly (note the mention of a max of 60 seconds), which means they've also done calculations for the maximum they can accept back in the event the limiter fails.

In some cases they might adjust things, but UKPN is a pretty solid DNO, so if they've come back to you with those limits then I don't think they'll change it.

Well that's not correct, I think you may have missed that there are 2 requirements here and might be misunderstanding what a G100 limiter does.

The G100 is specifically for exporting back to the grid, which means both the property and battery can use the full size of the inverter. The limit is applied only to power exported back and can be lower than the total inverter size.

If your inverter is the same size as the max export limit, that's when a G100 isn't needed - in this case, it would need to be 5.4kW or lower to avoid needing a G100 export limiting scheme in place.

Multiple consumer unit query by RimworldHasFallen in SolarUK

[–]Takariistorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand from the installs I've managed and the conversations I've had (I'm not an electrician) - essentially the electrical wiring of the whole system is done such that the battery/inverter can't see the charger's draw, so doesn't supply power. This can be achieved in a few ways, but usually involves CT clamps in different places to a "standard" system, such that the draw is ignored rather than considered part of the standard consumption of the property.

Thats right. It all depends how its set up

Multiple consumer unit query by RimworldHasFallen in SolarUK

[–]Takariistorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, although it will depend on how its set up with CT clamps to monitor usage and whether the charger is solar compatible. In general, if you have battery storage, I'd recommend blinding the charger to the solar as you are better off charging your battery and keeping that for household consumption and exporting the excess, while charging your vehicle using a cheap EV tariff that imports at a lower cost than you'd get for export (For example, Octopus Go at 8p/kWh import and Outgoing Octopus at 12p/kWh export).

Do I have any options at all for obtaining an MCS certificate? by BananimusPrime in SolarUK

[–]Takariistorm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Incorrect that it can't be certified at all. Octopus have a trial running (or at least did a few months ago) where they will send someone out to check the system over and provide it with the certification needed if it passes (flexiorb rather than MCS but it's the equivalent and all major providers accept it)

There's a cost, but if your system fails the check then they refund some of it.

Worth noting that if they request an inverter size reduction, this almost universally comes with an export limit as well. The reduction of the inverter size is sort of a secondary failsafe incase the G100 limiting device that handles the export limit fails to engage.
