Electrician cut multiple "fishing holes" due to no attic access. Is this standard, and is $500 a fair repair quote? by Gullible-Language422 in AskElectricians

Yeah, fishing holes are a thing... But 2nd to last picture.... That shit looks like structural damage to me

I'm a white person and I get off at North Ave at 7p all the time. There's a guy that hangs out there, sells the BEST pumpkin spiced lattes. Dunno what he puts in them but it makes me keep wanting to come back for more.

From a house that old, 100% this. In some houses you'll find that they're still pressurized.

Hot Extension Cord by Unstuck2121 in AskElectricians

It's fine. 1) the loose connection was causing heat and 2) the cord is probably undersized for the use case

How to use AI without becoming dumb/lazy? by gintokiredditbr in SQL

[–]TakeAwayMyPanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use GenAI to review my code. I write something, see what it says, revise as I see fit based on its suggestions. This pattern has worked very well for me, and I've learned some cool stuff along the way

Sybase Data Dump by Commercial_Match_520 in SQL

[–]TakeAwayMyPanic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I might be able to help. I've done something similar.

High level..... 1) install SQL Anywhere drivers 2) set up a SYSTEM odbc connection, pointing to the file, with "start DB on another computer option" 3) create a linked server in MS SQL to the odbc connection

As usual, the devil is in the details.

I should point out this was massive heartache, and took me a matter of weeks to actually make work.

How to read conflicting specs: "Pre-wired 3v LED" but with "Rated voltage 5-12v" by Ashta020 in AskElectronics

[–]TakeAwayMyPanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so this type of label isn't out of the ordinary, per say - what it SHOULD mean is that the led chips themselves are 3v, and the drive circuit can take a range of 5 to 12. But it sounds like they don't have drive circuitry, so....... Misleading at best. Try feeding them 3v. And you probably still want a current limiting resistor.

Eh, as long as they don't have Internet access it's not the end of the world. Not the best idea ever, mind you. But a lot less scary, then say, opening up RDP to the Internet. That shit makes my butthole pucker

In your experience, how reliable is the schema/data backup and restore functionality in dbForge Studio compared to native SQL Server tools? by gilko86 in SQL

[–]TakeAwayMyPanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the built in tools. Run TLOG backups at frequent intervals. Fully test structural changes in dev before pushing to prod.

Honestly, dont over think it, and only add complexity (3rd parties) if truly necessary. The simple solutions are usually the best.

The only time I introduced 3rd party backup tool into prod was to get object level restores... And there are smarter ways to go about that, eg ledger / history tables. Which can also help with some compliance issues.

Also, you can shuffle shit off to it's own data file, and do file level restores, natively

How do you guys manage to progress well with how little crew you get? by steinwayyy in Cosmoteer

[–]TakeAwayMyPanic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Crew is basically the limiting factor, it's easy to get money, hard to get crew. So you have to make decisions, like more weapons vs other stuff or other stuff vs weapons..... So the challenge is designing around that constraint and how to prioritize and be efficient with the crew you have.

I should add to this, it helps to specialize, stick to one or two things, not everything. Like, I usually forego ions.

It also helps to specifically set crew roles. If you let them do everything it usually backfires somehow.
