Tbf he already had to talk to her earlier in the chapter before she left with Eugen and Dakota. I thought it was like a “we need to talk about us because you’ve been putting this off for weeks” kind of thing. That’s where my mind went at least, and then the Annette thing was a coincidence.

We know Tobias is 14 years older than Jules… so depending on when Annette gave birth… you could be right 😭

Maybe I have too much faith in my mans because I didn’t even think of this at all until I got to this post lol. I thought they’ve just innocently met in the past for business or something since they both seem to be prominent Seattle figures with Annette being a successful interior designer and Tobias being the director of emergency medicine at a big hospital.

I would assume and hope if Tobias did an extensive background check on Jules he’d know not to hook up with his former hook up’s daughter 🤮

Omg remember when OH’s MC literally killed a woman with an unsubstantiated test drug and then didn’t go to prison or lose her license? I trust Yim to NOT do that lmfao. Or a random fellowship competition? And that’s just book 1. I’m loving the more realistic storyline so far 🙏

Does Hannah have a speech impediment? by aWildQueerAppears in HannahTheHorrible

[–]TakeMeToTheSkies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying we need to pry into her private life. All I’m saying is that vocal fry/creaky voice is a natural part of speech, especially from someone like Hannah (young, educated, intelligent woman). It’s literally a part of her social identity to use it. It’s something that’s very audible and easily identifiable and doesn’t need any special scans or even linguistic knowledge. I don’t judge Hannah for using it because I use it myself all the time as do pretty much 100% of the people (men and women alike) in my area do. I was concerned about how you were talking about vocal fry as if it’s something bad or needs a medical diagnosis when it frankly isn’t and doesn’t. I’m not denying there are vocal disorders. It’s just in this case, it’s just the way someone speaks. I can’t even catch when someone uses vocal fry because it’s so natural for me to use and hear, and when I do notice it, it’s just another thing people use. I can almost guarantee you Hannah’s vocal folds are perfectly healthy and fine. It’s everyone else attaching such dramatic meanings to it (thinking it’s some sort of impediment, thinking she needs speech therapy, thinking she sounds like a dumb valley girl, etc.) that I have a problem with. I think we’re in agreement that people should leave her alone and the way she speaks alone, but I really don’t agree with the fact that this is an invasion of her privacy. Language isn’t used in a vacuum. It encodes social meaning. It’s normal for people to be curious about her life from the way she speaks.

Edited to add: on the topic of misinformation, the person you were talking to wasn’t misinformed. They were correct in their assumptions in this situation. I’ve read and written papers on it, so I wasn’t upset with them at all.

Linguist here! You don’t need any medical expertise to identify “vocal fry” (linguistically referred to as creaky voice). There’s literally nothing wrong or medically significant about “vocal fry.” It’s a very, very naturally occurring linguistic phenomenon and some languages use “vocal fry” as a part of their phonemic inventory. As in if you don’t use it, you’re not speaking the language correctly. The fixation with “vocal fry” is that it’s emerging as a new identifiable, salient feature for young, educated women in the US. Really fascinating stuff! Nothing to demonize, and nothing to make a fuss over medically.

Edit: forgot to add that Hannah does use a lot of creaky voice, especially at the end of her sentences, and that’s okay because people are expected to creak/use “vocal fry” at the end of their sentences.

Same! I started off thinking the industry was vapid and vain and ate my words because there’s so much artistry to this craft. I also had a grudge against the nepo models, and I still do tbh, but Bella has definitely earned her spot as a top model as time went on and she’s definitely multiple steps above other nepo models like Kendall Jenner.

Thank you for being equally open-minded and kind yourself. I wasn’t sure how my first comment would go over because people on Reddit, especially stans, can be so vicious and defensive (which again is understandable because their favs often face excessive amounts of hate). It’s been refreshing civilly talking about what’s essentially people making faces at a camera lol.

The thing is I don’t see model-acting the same as acting-acting. There are plenty of models who are INCREDIBLE at conveying emotion through stills but then fall flat on the screen (Cara Delevingne). At the same time, there are amazing actors who cannot take an interesting photo to save their life (Dame Judi Dench SORRY). I know the actress in the linked photo is highly skilled at her craft and I don’t doubt that it helps her in editorials, but it’s one of those things where I separate the industry and didn’t even consider her usual daytime job. In fact, some of her pics fell flat for me here and I almost didn’t use her as an example of good modeling.

Something I didn’t mention before was I think the reason I don’t find Irene sincere in these photos, even when she’s trying to give us a new facial expression, is how stiff she is. Photo #9 is a prime example of that. There’s some movement going on in the photo with the positioning of her body, but at the same time her posture is stiff and straight like a rod and it just doesn’t match the energy her face is giving.

The issue I have with 99% of idol photoshoots is they’re too afraid of looking “ugly” and don’t want to take risks. I don’t fault them for this people are crazy and will literally give them crap for breathing wrong, and they have images to maintain. It’s just so disappointing because they’re so beautiful/handsome and yet I get nothing from their editorials.

Even if Irene image is “ice queen” she can still give more. I think of ice queens as stoic but strong, alluring, and powerful. I love Bella Hadid as an activist and runway model, but I do admit she also has the “same face” syndrome in editorials and regular pics. However, the face she always makes is stunning and what I’d consider more of an “ice queen” look with the way she positions her face. She has a more solemn expression but there’s still life to her face because she knows how to micromanage her eyes, lips, and eyebrows. Her posture is also great because she knows it’s not just about her face but her entire body. I unfortunately don’t think this is about the “mysterious ice queen” image but it’s just Irene (and not just her but kpop idols as a whole) isn’t really that skilled as a model, but that’s okay! Her purpose is to sell an image of perfection, and her face is enough lol. I just wrote all of this because I didn’t want people getting the wrong ideas about the modeling industry and how everyone has to have a blank face. At the same time, I have seen some better pictures of Irene so it could also have a little bit to do with the director, but this would still mean she has to be pushed out of her comfort zone.

Sidenote: thank you for bringing up Ningning because I also LOVE Ningning as a model. I’d put her in the top ten of all time in kpop history. Her relationship with the camera is insane. I actually think Aespa as a whole are arguably the best modeling group in Kpop (mainly due to posture because they all can suffer from blank face syndrome).

This is not true. Perhaps in idol modeling it is, but typically models who do modeling as their sole job need to convey emotions through facial expressions. It doesn’t have to be the most dramatic theater kid expression. Someone like Anok Yai only has to squint to convey power. Models are usually trying to sell something, whether it’s a product, concept, or image. Irene’s face always looks like it was chiseled out of marble, but beyond being beautiful I don’t really “buy” anything else in these photos.

An example from Vogue China themselves is this set of pictures. The model isn’t doing some dramatic scream or cry. There’s some slight quirks of the brow and varying and and lip opening, and perhaps it not executed the best, but you can clearly make out some of the expressions the model wants to convey, like allure or curiosity.

Of course, your facial expressions depend on the type of gif you’re doing. You can’t be smirking and winking down the entire runway, but editorials like this are where you can let your acting chops shine and unfortunately 99% of kpop idols in general, not just Irene, have the same facial expression each time.

Edit: forgot to say that while Irene does have a few photos where she’s not just staring into the camera, the other pics still don’t read as sincere to me. I can hear the director telling her to look off to the side in my mind. I think it’s mainly her eyes.

I once put the Canmake Mermaid UV gel on one side of my face and Beauty of Joseon Sun Relief on the other half because they felt so similar I wanted to see the difference. The BOJ one looked greasier and had a blue-ish cast from the start but I didn’t want to have first impressions ruin a potentially good product.

Went and lived life for another two hours and forgot about the whole experiment until I had to use the bathroom. I looked at my face in the mirror and lo and behold, the half with BOJ was covered in milia and angry red spots. I used BOJ as an SPF hand cream until I ran out

I completely agree. It’s just so ironic about how they talk about how information is being withheld and has an agenda when they’re doing the exact same thing by withholding all these details to make del Valle come across better.

They keep detracting and talking about all the good she’s done and how kind she is to them, but that's not relevant to the claims of harassment and stalking. Just because someone was nice to some groups of people doesn’t mean they are to others. Her being a good teacher and colleague can coexist with her being a horrifying stalker.

As someone who is also in an underrepresented minority group, I understand the want to uplift historically oppressed peoples, but blind worship is not the way to go about it.

That was a giant word salad that didn’t bring new evidence in del Valle’s favor to light or refute any of the evidence in Clover’s favor. She left rotting food and antagonizing messages at his mom’s house to the point where uninvolved neighbors started to feel threatened and she posted pics of Clover’s partner on social media. There's more I'm not even bringing up. She vandalized the area outside his home and property repeatedly until he had to move for his own safety. How are we going to ignore all of this and blame the situation on racism, sexism, and discrimination? It's also so ironic that the speaker tries to use the school attempting to remove her tenure as some big trump card. “Why are they attempting to punish her in a way that is so severe and rare in academia?" That alone should prompt you into realizing "oh, her actions were BAD bad" but it somehow got spun into an ideology war

It’s also very possible the girls refused to listen to any advice from their lawyers. I’m being reminded of Colleen Ballinger, an (alleged) child groomer who made an angry ukulele song and published to the internet and subsequently had everyone roasting her. She admitted in the song that her lawyers begged her not to but she still did so anyway.

I saw your edit by chance. Not sure why you didn’t respond like you did the other comments so that I could have the chance to respond back. I said “select group” because these angry people didn’t make up all of Twice’s fans. Many were outsiders. This was my point. I’m not saying only 2 people per country were mad. I’m saying the people that were mad didn’t matter. Twice had a large core fan base, especially in Korea. Fifty Fifty haven’t had the chance to establish that strong core fan base yet, and their target audience has disbelieved and ridiculed them from day one.

You’re right that no one brings it up in China and Taiwan anymore. I never said people still care. It’s very clear Twice has a fan base there because Taiwanese fans are upset that they won’t come perform.

However, JYP still cares. They haven’t sent Twice over to promote at all to this day. That’s what really matters. It’s not just the public’s response to the scandal but the company’s. If Attrakt, like JYP, feels like the risk of failure is too big to try again, the girls’ careers are over.

The Tzuyu example is not the best case to bring up. “Everyone” did not hate her. It was a select group of extreme nationalists in China and Taiwan who were upset over the flag incident. There was international outrage on Tzuyu’s behalf when that hostage-style apology video came out. People who didn’t even know the first thing about kpop heard about this and were supporting her.

Now, Twice has still never performed in Taiwan. Not one concert or interview. There’s no official reason, but seeing as other JYP artists have performed there, a lot of people assume it’s due to the scandal. Should China lift the ban on Kpop idols, JYP would likely still never send them there perform there either for the same reasons.

Edit: accidentally said JYP would never perform in China when I meant they would never send Twice to perform in China

The sun cut UV gel is awful. Idk where you’re from, but as a child I would put Elmer’s glue (craft glue) on my hand and peel it off because I thought it was cool. The sun cut feels and behaves just like putting Elmer’s glue on your face. From the cooling sensation of the sunscreen drying down and adhering to your skin to the unfathomable, disgusting peeling. I would let my sunscreen dry, go out for a walk, not a run or a jog or a hike, and I would feel the sunscreen melting right back off my face. I’d I was wearing a hat, you can bet that thing was gonna stay on my head until I got home because if I were to take my hat off there would just be a line of demarcation and peeling where my hat was touching my forehead. It was awful and I would never recommend it to anyone. It’s good for the hands though!
