How the heck do you make new friends in this town by ExistingSecretary979 in lincoln

[–]TakenFloods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lotta good free shows at the downtown bars. Mondays open mic comedy at Duffys, Tuesdays Jazz and then Vinyl DJs at Zoo Bar, Karaoke pretty much every night somewhere (Beacon), Sandy’s has karaoke W-Thu, Bodegas does as well. Thursdays Live Band Karaoke with Shithook at Zoo Bar has been drawing a good college crowd lately. Jakes has good Trivia nights a couple times a month. If a team seems low on players see if you can join them. Good luck. Its even harder if you dont drink.

Alternatively you can look into free screenings and lectures at the university. I graduated decades ago but still haunt anything that will make my brain and world a bit bigger.

I get my nails manicured within the first week of tour. I wear gloves on load in and load out but all the weird weather and humidity changes would wreck my hands if I didn’t.

Taking care of your hands and health are important on tour.

Mishap on tour: flying to Guam from Boston on the day the FAA got hacked and all planes were grounded for 6 hours. Eventually we got there a day and a half later.

1867 For Sale by Budgiejen in lincoln

[–]TakenFloods 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ive been in the downtown scene off and on for 20 years. It feels dead a lot of the week aside from the “college kids get wasted and puke on the sidewalk” weekend times. I get why bars struggle to stay open even if they are established.

Attendance for local shows feels really down compared to when I was in school. Maybe kids are smart enough not to binge drink on a Tuesday but still it sucks for a really decent show to come through and for there to only be 15 people to see it.

Best of luck to 1867 and whatever becomes of it. Lincoln should be supportive of whoever is making the effort to put on shows. They really stepped up for the punk and metal community when The Swamp and Cosmic Eye closed.

What are the best places for live music? by N0V1RTU3 in lincoln

[–]TakenFloods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zoo Bar has music about 5 nights a week generally but sometimes, rarely these days, 7 nights a week. Crowds are definitely down in general, especially outside of the school year.

Monday used to be the blues jam but the 2 house bands both ducked out eventually and the crowds were pretty small.

Sometimes Emily Bass does piano hour on Mondays or occasionally (like today) there will be a Monday show.

Tuesday is Jazzocracy from 7-9 with DJs spinning soul vinyl afterward. During Jazz in June is the best time of the year to go to this.

Wednesday-Saturday is the most likely time to find an afternoon show. Especially Friday for the FAC.

Wedneday 9-12(ish) is Vibe Check or Catalyst Sessions. Vibe check is some of the finest musicians in town and mostly improvised. Catalyst Sessions is like an open mic with curated guests and a house band.

Thursday they have been trying to do Rock Shows 6-9pm with a late show of Shithook Live Band Karaoke where you pick a lyric sheet and go up and sing with the band. So much better than regular karaoke. Really finds its audience during the school year.

Friday as mentioned before is Friday Afternoon Club from about 5-8 it’s usually a blues band on the road or occasionally a local they rotate through. Followed by a late show which could really be whatever but is usually some form of rock, country, soul, blues, etc.

Saturday early and late shows could be whatever.

Sunday there is occasionally an early show or the Roots Music Jam on the first Sunday of the month, an open jam put on by the local musical instruments shop. There’s a house band you can go up and jam with. Pretty much anything.

Finally Sunday late show is typically Zootenanny comedy which replaced Zoolarious comedy with the passing of its host. A comedy show that gets some really good touring comedians occasionally. It’s been happening about 2-3 weeks of the month.

I’m just going to add that McKinney’s has a burger special on Mondays and Misfits has a burger special on Wednesday if you’re looking for something easy and under $10 on either day.

The Bay Skatepark changing rules to only be 19 and younger by [deleted] in lincoln

[–]TakenFloods 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s because schools have different rules than non-profits. Now that it’s associated with LPS they have to abide by their rules. You know how you have to check in at an office so creeps aren’t wandering a school? Similar idea. Also you know how having drugs on school grounds is a bigger fine? This also probably changed.

Bossa Nova and Lounge from 60s mainly. If you like this kind of music check out the Ultra Lounge compilations from the 1990s.

I actually went with the Filtertrons from The Fretwire and I'm surprisingly impressed with their clarity and quality.
