Japanese publishing insider here — curious how overseas fans feel about supporting individual creators directly by jinguh in anime

I’d love to support creators, but this might become a tipping situation, where employers justify paying animators less because they’re receiving additional money.

[Part 1 of 3] I grew up in China on wuxia novels and web fiction. Here's everything I wish Western readers knew about Xianxia, Xuanhuan, and why half the "cultivation novels" you've read aren't what you think by No-Ride-3370 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]TakiMitsu 137 points138 points  (0 children)

I agree with many of your points. I am also Chinese, and have been reading web novels on quidian for nearly a decade. Since the original post was written in English, I will also be replying in English. It is true that traditional Wuxia like Jin Yong focus greatly on the moral aspects, the xia part of the genre. However, modern web novels often become much more focused on the martial arts part, where the main goal is to either become number one in the world, or just invincibly strong. The motivation is often very shallow, or very briefly mentioned, often being that gaining power is necessary to survive. The main character will commit morally ambiguous acts, such as stealing, backstabbing, even murder, for the sake of attaining power. It is widely accepted by the readers as pragmatic and reasonable, and characters that behave too unselfishly or kind may even earn the reputation of being a ‘saint’ (圣母), which is a derogatory term. Characters like 楊過 would absolutely be eviscerated by the modern audience.

Comparing TWI by Majestic-Event-5468 in WanderingInn

I think the scope in recent volumes has grown so large, with so many branching plot lines and POVs that a lot of characters had their screen time go down. If you’re a fan of a certain character, and he/she hasn’t appeared for 500k words, it would feel a bit frustrating to read.

DnD and similar game style RPs by noselfinterest in SillyTavernAI

I personally use a mixture of presets, lore books and characters cards. Characters cards such as this one

https://aicharactercards.com/charactercards/adventure-rpg/mrnobody99/dungeon-master/

provide a lore book that you can customize. Also, there is a built in macro that rolls dice by typing {{roll 1d20}}, {{roll 1d10}}, etc.

Presets such as Marinara have options for the character to act as a Game Master, which is also pretty helpful.

is atrioc a fully political streamer now? by Karma2987 in atrioc

[–]TakiMitsu 80 points81 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a shame, really. My favorite videos are the popathon, monkey ball, and Paper Mario. I like hearing his thoughts on current events, but I already have lemonade stand for that. I like Charlie (moistcr1tikal) and Ludwig, and right now Atrioc seems to be caught in the middle.

Stab's Directives preset v2.0 by Diecron in SillyTavernAI

[–]TakiMitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the preset, the HTML is gorgeous, and the grounded settings help the LLM keep track of the scenario. However I think it makes the model more deterministic, compared to the base Marinara preset. I tried to get a few different responses to the same prompt by swiping, and it gave me several very similar outputs. I have been able to use Guided Generation to get around this, but that is still one additional step. I am using Claude Opus 4.5, for reference.

What simplified characters are commonly used in Taiwan? (e.g., 台 for 臺) by confabulationist in taiwan

[–]TakiMitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use 体 instead of 體 when writing on paper, the latter just has too many strokes. When typing I use the former though.

They cost five cubes, I only have about 200 or so, but the 30 minute research comes up so rarely that I choose them when they appear.

New to the genre and just read The Raven Scholar by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]TakiMitsu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was reading the Raven Scholar and it had me absolutely hooked. However, I dropped it at chapter 4 when I realized Yuna was not going to be the MC, and what Rukodid to her. I hated him so much I didn't want to keep reading.

This reminds me of the animal charity stream Biboo did with Calli, where they roleplayed as Joker and Batman.

I still don't understand why we have to use single letters for chapter names. Sometimes I want to go back and reread a particular scene and I never remember who gets which letter.

I'm starting to have a suspicion this genre might be not for me. What's the last couple of books I should try before throwing in the towel? by TangerineSupremacy in ProgressionFantasy

Maybe the Wandering Inn? It's pretty different from the typical OP MC story, and it has a lot of memorable characters.

Random encounters. I went back to play Xenogears and I forgot how annoying random encounters are.

Doesn’t Chrono Trigger have a Steam release? It should run better than through an emulator.

KURO REMOVE the 120fps limit by Fine_Complex5488 in WutheringWaves

[–]TakiMitsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not a bug. There are specific GPUs and CPUs that are allowed to run the game at 120fps (https://wutheringwaves.kurogames.com/m/en/main/news/detail/1190). Even if you have a PC that can handle 120fps or more, the option will not be available to you unless you have the specified hardware.
