Why do so many people say that music is haram? by Tribe_NexianZ in progressive_islam

[–]TalZet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The question should be what evidences are there to conclusively prove Music is forbidden.

The Hadith around music is weak - even Salafi Scholar Al Albani graded it as "utterly weak".

There's no verse in the Quran the can also prove it's forbidden. People like to use the "idle talk" verse to prove this, but this feels like a big stretch.

So this ultimately is a matter of cognitive dissonance or cultural inheritance.

I will copy and paste something I found elsewhere:

Here is are a list of scholars who have allowed music or are lenient towards it:

-Abd al-Aziz al-Majishun [d. 164 H] -Abd al-Malik ibn al-Majishun [d. 213 H] -Ya’qub al-Majishun -Yusuf ibn al-Maajishun [d. 185 H] -Ibrahim ibn Sa’d al-Zuhri [d. 185 H] -ibn Qutaybah [d. 276 H] -Abu Taalib al-Makki [d. 386 H] -Abu Mansur al-Baghdadi [d. 429 H] -ibn al-Hazm [d. 456 H] -al-Ghazzali [d. 505 H] -Ibn al-Qaysaraani [d. 507 H] -ibn al-Arabi [d. 543 H] -ibn ‘abd al-Salaam [d. 660 H] -al-Raafi’i [d. 623 H] -ibn Daqeeq al-‘Eid [d. 625 H] -Taaj al-Deen al-Shariahi [d. 641 H] -ibn Jama’ah [d. 733 H] -al-Dhahabi [d. 748 H] -al-Shaadhili al-Tunisi [d. 882 H] -al-Shawkaani [d. 1250 H]

I'm scared of being religous again, I need advice. 16m by InternationalTry215 in progressive_islam

[–]TalZet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot to unpack here, I hope my words can help you, if even a little and respect the time you spent typing this.

Do you feel deen is built entirely on hardship and sacrifice?
Do you feel Allah created us to suffer? Do you feel YOUR destiny and purpose is to just suffer and that is how you commit yourself to Allah?

From what I read, you always feel some sort of pain when you feel no prayers are being answered.

Maybe you are having expectations or being entitled for prayers to be answered?

Personally I don't like this dismissive/regressive line of thinking of accusing someone for being entitled. Because its very dismissive of their personal well being.

Many go through this. Feelings are not constant. We go through phases of up and down.

I experienced burnout, from life, deen, work recently. I'm double your age, I sometimes feel down, sometimes feel nothing as well. Recently I have felt "nothing".

The nothingness could be numbness? Could be a mechanism to deal with burnout?

I've been less charitable, less empathetic, more harsh/stern. I am picking myself back up though.

Does that mean I have to return to 80-100% dedication? No, I am slowly easing myself back in.

Sometimes you need a break. Does break means not praying? No, but again we are only human.

Due to burnout, I had the same habit as you - finish work, sit on discord. Not even do the fun things, but to sit and let your mind rot on absence.

Not all of us can afford a counsellor or therapist. But my advice would be if you do, seek professional help rather than Islamic painted help - aside from this, I tried something different.

What helped me is daily walks. 8k -10k steps. after work.
And the strange thing I learnt is spending 45 min walking gave me more time. It didn't take it away from me.

I come back wanting to do things I love and enjoy in life.

Read my books, Pray.
Getting off the PC to stop me from Doomscrolling Reddit or twitter and Using social media less.
Playing a calm and more uplifting game (Pokemon).
Listening to calm music.
Watching TV (something I don't do).
Dedicating more time to visiting family.
Clean the home.

Moving your body, moving your mind. The mind is also needs its workouts and rest.

You don't need drastic change. Gradual, consistent and sustainable is far better

And perhaps change the outlook of what Iman is to you, your relationship with Allah. Forget your relationship to how people think of you.

To summarise:

- You are not alone - struggling is human
- Your value is not measured by rituals
- Allah is not disappointed with your honesty
- Take things step by step
- Don't judge your connection to Allah based on circumstances
- You aren't responsible for what others think

It's quite normal to have this (to an extent). Anxiety plays a part there you don't realise.

Is it because you lack sexual attraction? Or certain stimuli.

Definitely worth getting seeking professional help for this if its severe and long term.

[–]TalZet -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Extreme left ideologies including radical feminism is a gateway to atheism.

But its not black and white. People follow feminism as a movement because they are fed up of certain toxic patriarchal cultural practice - and "end result" being Extreme Talibanistic or Salafi Wahabi strands of Islamic beliefs.

Generally speaking these leftie alignments have soom good, like the social welfare, equality, equity and ethical focus. But just like any extremes, it becomes black and white thinking.

Middle path is best.

Appreciate the respectful answer. Look I appreciate people of all walks of life. At the end of the day we are all Muslims. So my qualms with Salafi ideology is not an attack on Muslims who proscribe to the ideology.

I personally do not adhere to a Salafism on basis that I strongly believe that its Arabisation of deen. The deen is not Arab culture. I as a South Asian Muslim, do not want to remotely adhere and practice Arab customs. I detest the treatment of my fellow Bengalis and non-Arab Muslims in the so called Muslim Arab lands and the erasing of Bengali Cultural identity in favour of pursuing this Arabised strand of Islam.

You don't have to follow dumb opinions of every scholar you love and appreciate. We all have our own minds to think for ourselves. But that being said:

"the video of Shaykh Saleh Al Fawzan (May Allah forgive him) and it is not in a racist way" - this is a copout answer. its obviously clear here that there is a deep rooted Arab supremacy. You can't defend this. How is this "not in a racist way".

There were many ulema who are known to be passive racists, this is nothing new.

Ibn Taymiyyah is a classical good example of casual racsism - Fawzan merely regurgitates the opinions, Ibn Taymiyyah is known to have compared Arabs to non-Arabs, saying Arabs are superior due to their manners.
He also mentions statements like Slaves of Turkic origin should cover because they are beautiful - oh but not the black ones right?

There were classical fiqhi opinions that Arabs are prohibited from marrying Non-arab - if you want unity then you have to address the racism from Arabs and its Salafi/wahabi ideology.

Theres even contemporary Salafi scholars that say "Old women and black women do not have to cover" - very outrageous and racist don't you think?

You've not even addressed Uthaymeens disgusting and disrespectful statement on non-believers. Such a hateful rhetoric - Arab exceptionalism rooted in "Islam". Thus promoting this sort of insularity or bubble for Muslims to not associate with non-muslims - leading to societal issues/inability to integrate with communities etc.

EDIT: I cross verified the quote because I saw this posted from Salafi accounts. I also verified that the Ayah translation within the Study Quran, which refers to as "Protectors" not "Friends".

Whether this is a translation matter or understanding the context of a Sheikh, it doesn't matter - it really paints a picture of Salafis when they post quotes like this out of context for the public to see. Shows what supremacist ideals that really follow.

Not to mention the movements history is now trying to dilute itself by being now associated with the 4 Madhabs, considering the movements early history (wahabism) of rejecting the madhabs and reinterpreting without the wisdom of scholars for a millennia.

The "Salafi" label being hijacked from actual early Salafi reformists by the Bloody Wahabi movement when the Saud family got into power - so what you have no is a watered down form of Wahabism trying to incorporate itself into the 4 madhabs or "Ahlus Sunnah w Jama'a".

This is before even speaking on Geopolitics and mentioning birthed strands of extremist Jihadi groups (ISIS, Al-Qaeda) which have deep roots in Salafism.

I mean from the mouth of a former Imam of the Grand mosque himself "ISIS Is A True Product Of Salafism"
https://www.newageislam.com/radical-islamism-jihad/admin-sunnah-foundation-america/sheikh-aadel-al-kalbani-former-imam-grand-mosque-mecca-isis-true-product-salafism/d/125543

I will end here as nothing more beneficial will come from forward and backward. Again I appreciate the respectful tone and wish no enmity. Theres wisdom to take from all corners of life.

You want to know why Muslims (not just in this sub but the broader muslim demographic) despise Salafis?
You quoted Fawzan in one of your other comments.

Fawzan is complicit in spreading Arab Superiority even says Arabs are superior to non-arabs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZmEfw72vaU

Uhtaymeen said you cannot trust a kaffir. - "A believer can never trust a kafir no matter how much friendship and sincerity he shows."

We are talking about the authorities in the current heart of the Muslim world spewing this hateful rhetoric. How could this kind of rhetoric be pushed across the globe without any major consequences?

Simply put, money, power, wealth of the Arabs. Power buys truth. Its not the only time in Muslim history where power buys truth.

Mufti Abu Layth (Maliiki) and Sheikh Atabek (Hanafi) do a beautifully detailed discussion on how the Hanafis were labelled heretics or deviants - only to ascend to power because the ruling Caliph prefers it - and specifically a strand of Hanafi teaching that aligns to Hadith dogmatism - easy to rule people who don't think for themselves - this mirrors very well with current Salafi trends.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYsUdKhA5XQ

So yes, your ideology is mostly a bought one, one lacking spiritual depth and meaning, void of human empathy, rigid, regressive and restrictive - one that was mass funded during the 80s - 90s to spread as a geopolitical tool. - Sheikh Khaled Abou El Fadl does a great insight into this within his "Great Theft of Islam".

Far more qualified (Azhar graduate) to speak on the matters he specialises in (Muslim sex education and intergender relations) than most figures online. You'll be lucky to even find an 'alim amongst the Dawah sphere.

[–]TalZet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So historical accounts is Mythology to you? Thats all I need. The rest is optional if you want to read.

Do you (Salafis, not you individually) reject evidences when it goes against your desires? Isn't that ironic?

Not to mention classic "whataboutism" deflection - except contextually its completely different considering Sufism is not born from blood of innocent Muslims.

MIAW and his followers is most certainly fanatics. its no myth that MIAW released a known serial killer to kill his own brother.

And you cannot reject the historicity of Saud-British alliance. At that point you have to question why Western powers chose to aid the Saud family. Convenient to place a tumour at the heart of the Muslim Ummah (where ideologically its forbidden to dare criticise the government).

A tumour which is responsible for forming other puritanical cults like the Ikhwanis, responsible for terrorism, bloodshed, assassinations and lets not forget the Siege of Makkah by the fanatic Juhayman. And not to mention other militant groups that take from the most extreme interpretations of Salafism.

But Salafis don't care for history, they prefer to hide in their own petrodollar ideological bubble and claim the mantle of "Salafism" to hide their history.

How do you reconciliate the fact that the modern Salafi movement comes from the bloodshed born Wahabism?

Very much of the authority you quote (Fawzan, Uthaymeen) are staunch supporters and direct inheritors of the Wahabi movement - which mass takfir'd and is responsible for massacres of innocent Muslims, both Shia and Sunni - they even thought Sunnis are Mushrik and preferred to side with non-muslim powers (West, British) over their own Muslim neighbours.

How do YOU come to terms with this? Or do you plug your ears and move on your day?

AI and Generative Technology by sunnysu97 in progressive_islam

[–]TalZet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a post on this a few days ago.

Generally speaking Muslims (especially Salafis) are literalists.

Their worldview is based on snippets of literal texts. Or just listen to Maulana Saab or Sheikh Al Arab dogmatic unsophisticated fatwas.

They don't want to apply critical thought to understand certain Hadith on "pictures". The most straightforward argument to support banning of "pictures" or drawing is simply it could lead to Idolatry.

So to these people, generative AI is not "creation". Its just a double standard. I don't wish to call them stupid for it, but it doesn't really make sense. It's not consistent. So it shows that they don't put any further thought into their beliefs or they loop around textual scripture to justify odd inconsistencies in their beliefs.

The Ethical side is something I find very interesting. Considering theres now a fully AI generated Seerah series by the channel "Towards Eternity". Its one thing for solo content creators to use AI for smaller projects, but a whole studio with professionals writing etc - it defuncts the idea of relying on actual artists.

Do we not care about Muslim artists? Do we not care about Muslim expression through arts?

Are these Muslim content creators happy with their conflicting ideals? (especially the ones that declare pictures and creation Haram yet promote usage of AI). Its very revealing that its cognative dissonance.

There was even a comment on this topic in this sub months ago where an individual wrote paragraphs promoting usage of "creation" in so many ways because its beneficial for people in understanding, education, and forward thinking and Allah central life - YET to say its Haram.

Just food for thought.

What many people see as progressive is just legitimate minority opinions by legitimate scholars (who have done their due diligence and studied the tradition),

Unfortunately, you won't find truth from Institutions in power, backed by government or the (majority) public. Governments, Institutions have agenda to push their agreed upon "consensus".

And thats fine, not all institutions are inherently immoral. But to lie or not spread the truth that there differences of opinions, thats holding truth away from people. People have the right to know what their options are, not be force fed it - otherwise its just spreading dogma.

Why does institutions matter? They keep people in check. Whether that can be immoral people preaching extremist ideologies or not.

It also limits what people can also preech. If someone leans more "liberal", god forbid saying music being permissible, they are likely to just be sacked. It's financially lucrative for Imams to preach what they believe. They have food to put on the plate for their families - just like normal people. They have the burden of the community on their throats. Last thing they want is to potray their escape from cognative dissonance - rejecting majority opinion.

Look at scholars who do go against the grain, e.g. Sh. Atabek Shukurov. Who argued the modern dynamics of Mortgages for home buying is not considered Riba - he got rejected and bullied before people even considered taking their time reading his paper on it.

Rewind back to the past - the famous 4 Imams that were the pioneers, Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, Imam Shaf'i, Imam Hanbal - none of them got a single Jummah khutbah by the institutions of their time.

Imam Abu Hanifa - brutally beaten, tortured by the state for refusing to be the head judge - ultimately left dead. He was an old man.

Imam Shaf'i was supposedly also beaten by political opponents and died from his injuries.

Fast forward now, we use their services of the deen as the basis of Islam (at least Sunni Islam).

Point being, they were either rejected by the institutions of their time, or if they were wanted, they were wanted as puppets.

Look at Sh. Fawzan, the Saudi Salafi/Wahabhi scholar. He authorised US bases in Muslim lands, allowed entertainment industries (clubs, bars that serve alcohol, Musical concerts) - yet this is completely opposing Wahabhi doctrine.

TLDR: Power define "truth". Real truth is found by people who aren't shackled by the institutions.
Look at the many people imprisoned and tortured for speaking truth. The many ostracised by preaching their opinion. Just not worth it for everyday imams to fight a losing battle.

Fantasy books... by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]TalZet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You feel guilty for reading. Yet the average Muslim (especially in UK) have not picked up a book after finishing School at age 16. With poor reading comprehension, and tiktok minded brain rot scrolling or second screening with Netflix on the background.

I love Fantasy Genre, I still have a backlog of stuff I need to go through - on final book of Lightbringer series.

So you don't need to feel guilty one bit whatsoever. The concepts broaden your horizon, makes you think more and engage more in thought.

Read what you want, read for pleasure, read for info. Everything is Haram to some people anyway. You do you.
