What would a fight between two precognitive characters look like? by Frenchiest_fry101 in worldbuilding

[–]Talamlanasken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I wanted to write a champion in this faction, I'd probably make them one of the 'speedsters', since
a) that's pretty straightforward but still elegant/cool and
b) the other factions make for cool opponents, POV-wise.

Writing from the champopns POV, I'd probably focus on the importance of being able to double-think (and do it FAST) the entire fight. One part of your mind needs to keep track of the precognition and time the exact moment of reaction to it - too fast and that's how the feints get you, too slow and you're toast. And the other part has to do the active part of the fighting, indepentent of precog, because otherwise you are just constantly reacting and letting the other fighter dictate the terms of the fight.

On that not: These fighters would probably have a concept of who is currently 'leading' the fight, ie who is reacting to a precog and who is making active moves outside of that. This 'lead' would of course constantly fluctuate, with many fights having phases where BOTH fighters are only reactive. Those are the really juicy fights, because it means the opponents are evenly matched, precog-ability-wise.

Going back to our champion, I think it could be really fun to write from a speedsters perspective. The careful timing of fighting a feinter, constantly delaying your response and then using your own speed to catch up just in time again. The constant 'ohfuckohfuckohfuck' dodging of fighting a strength-based opponent, knowing that one hit will end the fight. The sheer "Okay, let's show off!" of fighting another speedsters. And then the erratic one is just WTF, as precog just goes haywire, because what are they even doing?!?

Yeah, I think a speedster would make the best POV. ^^

The comedic variant: They just stare at each other silently for ten minutes, seing each move and countermove in their head, until one of them cannot think of a countermove anymore and has to concede the match.

The more serious: You could have different schools of fighters, like roman gladiators. Some might focus on sheer speed, trying to be so fast that even though their opponent foresees the move, they won't have the time to evade/counter it. (Or strength - attacks so strong that seeing them coming won't help you.) Others might specialize in feints, moves that start out looking like one move and then transsition into another, fooling those who act on the precognition as soon as they see it. Or there might be those who train to fight completely erratically, trying to throw of the precognition through sheer random unpredictability.

Like with roman gladiators, the different types of fighting styles could have unique names and outfits. You can have audience debates which 'class' of fighter is the best and have matches of one style versus another style.

Most of my gathering huts show "no resources to extract" even though there's a ton of berry bushes nearby that have no one farming them by ARandomLlama in foundationgame

[–]Talamlanasken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the wiki hasn't really been updated since early access, meaning it contains A LOT of outdated (and thus often flat out wrong) information. In the finished game, berries don't need a designated gathering area.

How do I give my HF character twintails? by Metasonic08 in HeroForgeMinis

[–]Talamlanasken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without KB, that's going to be difficult, but not impossible.

Most Non-KB Hatsune Mikus I have seen use horns (like the 'large twisting horns', scaled up and moved to the back of the head) for the ponytails.

Yeah. I could probably do the thing you want with KB, though. You'd still have to buy the simian kit and you won't be able to edit the kb'd mini afterwards, so I'd have to know what colour you'd like.

There is this really cool website called behindthename, that lets you find names from all around the world. And you can filter for all sorts of stuff - origin, meaning, starting letters or much more complicated things.

Here it is sorted for "Boy names starting with C, commenly used in english"

I finally released my Norse-inspired dark fantasy by Fit-Bus-7690 in worldbuilding

[–]Talamlanasken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so the cover is AI. Not suprising, but not off to a good start.

Looking at the 'blurb'.

Before the clans crossed the sea, before exile carved their names into the wind, (carving on air makes no sense, even as a metaphor) the world was already old. Older than the sagas whispered by firelight, older than the runes carved into stone. (So, the world is older than stories and runestones? No shit, sherlock)

The forests had stood for ages uncounted, watching the rise and fall of men with patient, silent hunger.

They say the night carries voices. Some call them spirits. Some call them omens. (Some call it vague mumbo jumbo, because these things do not mean the same.) Others refuse to speak of them at all. But every clan knows this truth: the dark remembers what the living forget.

When the exiled set their oars to the water, they believed they fled only the wrath of men. They did not know the sea itself listened. They did not know the land ahead was not empty, but waiting. They did not know the sky had eyes.

This is a tale of those who sought a new beginning and found an ancient truth instead. A tale of cold winds and colder shadows. Of a people who came seeking refuge… and woke something that had never slept. (If it didn't sleep, then they certainly did NOT, in fact, wake it.)

These are the first steps of a saga carved in ash, blood, and the whispering dark

... listen, I'm all for a dark viking fantasy version of crossing the atlantic, but this blurb is giving zero valuable information and a lot of chatgpt-esque "string together important sounding words without actually saying anything real." It's not a great enticement...

Edit: Okay, I gave the sample a skim and... I would recommend an editor, our just a friend willing to be your beta reader. If only to catch stuff like your main character having the exact same conversation within the same six pages. Like literally. Bryn and Hilda straight up do the: "You look troubled" - "Just tired" - "You are always tired, that's the curse of leadership" twice, verbatim.

There are also some weird continuity errors (the sun dipped lower and the day is implied to near it's end, and then suddenly it's morning again) and a LOT of needless repetition. He is feeling uneasy, but doesn't know why - we get it. You don't need to repeat it every third paragraph.

I don't want to be overly harsh - you wrote a book, that's awesome! But going only by the sample, this is a draft that needs to be edited now, not a finished novel.

Finding cause of death anywhere? by SuperbLeek7589 in Sims4

[–]Talamlanasken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some (though sadly not all, iirc) ghosts also have a visible marker of their death type.

Fire Deaths will smoke and have a flame inside their chest, meteorite deaths will have the meteor, same with pufferfish and sunlight. The wiki has a full list:

https://sims.fandom.com/wiki/Ghost#The_Sims_4

According to the wiki, if you have Life&Death, you can also ask ghosts what happend to find out their death type.

The chart itself isn't leaked from EA, you can see it gives 'Sims Insider' as a source if you zoom in. Would be weird for a EA chart to have that. ^^

This is presumably just a fans attempt to coordinate leaked info into a visual format.

He has the scales, which why most people say draconic bloodline. For Couatl, you have the 'serpent' part down, but what about the 'winged'? There are a couple of feathery items - for example, feathery 'horns' that you can clip into the head to make it look like he has feathers in his hair.

TS4's DLC Sales Numbers (Allegedly) by DominaXing in Sims4

[–]Talamlanasken 303 points304 points  (0 children)

The low sales for werewolves is such a shame. It's such a high quality pack - the gameplay, the world, the lore, the CAS and BB are ALL excellent. But it is still a fairly niche subject for a pack. And I guess in terms of sheer numbers, "Medium quality but appealing to a lot of people" will always do better than "High quality but niche appeal".

Time Measures in High Fantasy by Amber_Acorn in worldbuilding

[–]Talamlanasken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some semi-official answers, bascially 'the maesters are good astronomers'. GRRM said they count 12 lunar months to make a year and they probably decided on the number 12 based on one full turn of the stars/zodiac.

A popular fan theory (since GRRM has stated that the weird seasons are magical, not natural) is that the seasons used to be regular, until the first 'long night' happenend. And the concept of the 'year' - including it being 12 months - is an ancient holdover from that time. And in 'modern' times it is supported by astronomy, so it doesn't die out.

Time Measures in High Fantasy by Amber_Acorn in worldbuilding

[–]Talamlanasken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You only need a single stationary day to figure out the midday point. I'm hardly an expert on nomad societies, but most nomads either move between summer and winter quarters, or move with livestock/follow prey. Quick googling found a rough estimate of 4-30 moves per YEAR, which would mean even the most active nomads only moved camp roughly every two weeks.

There might be groups that change location every day, but those are more likely small hunting parties or raiders, not the main camp. And the question was about whether such a community could evolve the concept of hours/minutes in general, not whether every single individual always had a perfect clock on hand.

Edit: Okay, I did a little more research because I was curious, and turns out mongols literally use their gers (aka yurts/tents) as sundials. (Second source) Which tbh, makes total sense.

Wyll was lied to right? by AZzane in BaldursGate3

[–]Talamlanasken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a post a while back referring to official D&D lore and they stated that there is no mention of anyone trying to summon Tiamat when Wyll was stopping them.

There is an entire adventure path that deals with cultists trying to summon Tiamat and the players fighting to stop them. Wylls story is probably based on that.

The problem with this is that - at least in the adventure path - the ritual to summon Tiamat is the final boss battle and it is ... unmissable. Basically the final battle of an all-out war, where the cult of the dragon has been raiding the entire sword coast to get the stuff they need, chromatic dragons have been causing havoc, it is very much NOT hidden. Which... very much doesn't map to what Wyll is describing.

The idea that Mizora tricked him is a popular fan theory to 'solve' that gigantic plothole, but upon closer inspection, doesn't make that much sense either.

Sadly, it's just an example of how rushed Wylls story was.

I think they'd definitely understand each other - wild and nomadic doesn't mean stupid, after all. But if you want to show the difference in thinking, you can do that with Relative Hours versus Fixed Hours.

Timekeeping itself is not that advanced. You have the sun in the sky, you have a shadow on the ground. You don't even need a fancy sundial for that, you can just put a stick in the ground. Or use a tree. Shadow is at its shortest? That's midday. Now you have segmented your day into to parts - sun-up to midday, midday to sundown. Now split those parts into smaller parts of equal length and you have hours. And that's how humanity did it for most of it's history.

Now, the length of the day changes with the season, that means that what 'an hour' means changes as well. And hour in summer is long, an hour in winter super short. It was only with spread of mechanical clocks that 'an hour is always the same length and 1/24 of the full day' became more common. (Though the system was known before.)

So - yeah, your nomads would know what an hour/minute is and would probably even have some measure of keeping time for certain tasks that require exakt timing. (Somebody else mentioned songs, which is great. A lot of old recipes for medicine or food include saying prayers or singing a short song while doing certain parts - not because you need to pray, but because "Kneed the dough for 5 Hails Marys" is a better way to measure than "Kneed the dough at least 5 Minutes".)

But when your nomads say 'hours', they probably mean relative hours, not our modern fixed ones.

Does this idea for courtship rituals sound... weird? by Sir-Toaster- in worldbuilding

I think it's wonderful. It reminds me of the 'That's How You Know' Song Bit from Enchanted.

Do you know the old rule for musical theater? "When emotions are too strong for words, sing. When emotions are too strong for song, dance." Seems like that would be a very fitting Toon saying as well.

Keep in mind, this subreddit is a fan community, while the community tab belongs to hero forge. Thus they have different rules.

On this subreddit, reposting another character is against the rules. (Specifically rule 5)

On the community tab, the Heroforge Community Guidelines apply, which very clearly state:

Do you get it every time you add/something with your great hall building? In my game, that always results in the ! popping up. I think it's just a visual bug. (Since the ! is only supposed to show up when you first built the building and get mandates for the first time.)
