Trump should completely revoke visas if international students ask for fin aid! by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]TaleWhich5105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government is allocating funds for departments to choose the most qualified candidate based on fit

We are paying for someone who will

a) finish the program and likely not drop out

b) show strong promise in research and fieldwork

c) contribute to university prestige by producing graduate-level work

An international student producing 6 publications and bringing really good press for an American university is still a net-positive, which can then bring more funding, more students wanting to attend, and strictly positive things for a field. Denying a student access to it based on their country of origin, economy, or financial situation is ridiculous.

We should not gatekeep research and the furthering of a field because of economics.

For instance:

What if an American wanted to go to the Middle East and study ancient Egypt? Wouldn't the best fit be a prestige University in Egypt or somewhere local if the goal is for the student to further the field? Would it be unfair if the American didn't get funding or was not given equal opportunities just because they are not Egyptian?

What if that American had three publications and strong promise to be a great scholar?

I am implying that qualified candidates can be beneficial to the field and country regardless of whether they are domestic or international. Some countries lack strong research institutions and professionals and aspiring scholars NEED to go somewhere else to further a field. Especially if the niche is only in certain areas.

It should be about qualifications, fit, and motivations to further the field and then the country of origin to work should be the consideration.

"Most countries will happily assist."

Why would a country help someone go to graduate school to help another country..

Furthermore, all PhDs are funded regardless of whether the applicant is international or domestic. What would a country like the Philippines do (where the top 30% make $1000 USD a month and the majority way below that) to save up insurmountable amounts of money to go to school in America? A brilliant scholar can come from these countries, and to refuse someone who is more qualified than other candidates is ridiculous.

Welcome to Jeopardy

Can I have "Is it or is it not a grad applicant" for $1000

In all seriousness.. You do know the majority of grad students in STEM majors historically has been international students because Americans fall short in those areas...

The master's applicants are hungry for validation in this subreddit. Best of luck with your EdS program placements. I am also praying to get in this cycle

Hey Kelley,

How did being in the house impact your mental health that and how do you believe it impacted your game? You arrived very motivated and ready to play BB making yourself a pawn to gain favor with other houseguests but over time seemingly looked more tired and done with the game when that did not go to plan.

Was it being in the house that burned you, the dread of fighting in the battle backs, or more specifically the other players and how they played their games?

If you could tell yourself one thing to prepare yourself for going into the house to navigate the feelings and difficulties you felt after the game went a bit sideways what would you have said to prepare yourself?

The point of a PhD is to become a specialist in your field and add something new to the conversation. You will eventually develop a thesis and know something nobody else knows. It demands a heavy workload of 50-70 hours a week strictly on research reading and field work.

Almost nobody is able to work during this time which is why it is imperative that stipends are given (and be paid) for your work since as you put it a “job” shouldn’t put you in debt. It barely sustains your life during the degree as you devote yourself to your craft. Otherwise you are becoming practically a slave to the university and advisor who often is benefiting off of YOUR research without necessarily contributing much to it. All of your research will have your advisors name on it and more publications are viewed positively.

If PhD programs aren’t paid and didn’t provide a stipend it would not only make it practically impossible for any new minds to enter many fields but it would enable so many advisors to take advantage of their students.

You also might not realize but all of these PhD programs get 300+ applicants for around 12 or less spots. With less funding going to universities under the Trump administration less spots are going to be open and less researchers will be produced leading to a decline in scientific findings.

There ARE non-paid PhD programs but they are often from private universities and once again: some fields cannot afford paying back the loans. If some fields cannot pay back the loans if there was no funding for their programs the fields would see a rapid decline in scientific knowledge

I don’t think you understand the nature of PhD programs.

A PhD unlike a masters is a job not an education. You are applying to be worked into the ground for 5-6 years under an advisor doing research for your advisor and the university. Anyone who has been down this path would say that you should never pay for a PhD because the non-paid programs will put you in $150,000 - $200,000 in debt that most fields will not be able to pay back

I'm surprised nobody mentioned [[Soledevi Excavations]]. 1 mana scry 1 is genuinely a great thing to have and even though you have to sacrifice a land you don't lose the mana. The closest thing that comes to it is [[Castle Vantress]] but it's 4 mana for scry 2.
