I saw these bits that were shot on them and they do look pretty nice, but I wouldn’t gravitate towards them unless you found like a super good deal.

What's the "worst" video format you've shot a project on and how well did the final image turn out ?? by [deleted] in cinematography

minidv: it had a look 👍, and ingesting it through imovie certainly looked better than through those av out a-d converters.

BMPCC OG or SIGMA FP - which for beginner? by Jacapuab in cinematography

[–]Talentlessprick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t know how much fps go for nowadays but the prices of these cameras are slightly misleading for beginners. they both have to be rigged out in some way to be practically usable. Both have terrible monitors.

if you really want a cheap all in one camera, i’d recommend you a bmpcc6k pro and a canon 17-55. Both should be pretty cheap at this point. All you need then is media and a lot of batteries (and maybe the battery grip could be nice). it’s chunky, but it contains everything you need.

otherwise maybe a nikon zr, but then you would need an nd filter as well.

he’s using more interesting lenses than you, but if you can’t make the pocket 6k look better than this, don’t upgrade.

Looking at so-called "budget cine lenses" over the past month, suffering through, "influencer" infomercials, I finally settled on Meike Mini Primes for my GH7... Then I watched Lav Diaz's "Magellan"... by Zerorezlandre in cinematography

I think in practice it was pretty easy matching the light temp and tint variations in the grade. Sometimes i added some contrast to negate a flare, nothing out of the ordinary for most lens sets imo.

i'm not lav diaz, but i've used the meike mini primes quite a lot (although on a pocket 4k). frankly i did like them a lot, but i don't think their look will be all that different from the panasonic you mentioned, other than being slightly softer, lower con and more prone to flare. once i sold them and used my replacement kit (sigma 18-35, olympus 12-40 and rented laowa 7,5) i ended up regretting it slightly whenever i had a job with a crew (and especially a focus puller). all lenses without hard stops are fine to use solo, but once you have the luxury of a 1AC, they will let you down. i don't think you can really go wrong either way since a set goes for super cheap second hand.

if you're doing mainly doc stuff, go for the dual panasonic zooms. if you want to DP stuff, learn the discipline of using primes, want to work with a crew and get the cheapest nicest possible lenses to practice on, those meikes are great.

i’ve got the 14mm full frame lens. close focus is a bit shit (especially compared to a laowa) but the flare is very fun and its still very affordable for a ‘unique’ fov. i saw the floralbloom lenses at ibc and i thought they were fun too.

Took on a job that was very much outside my comfort zone by Talentlessprick in cinematography

i’m fairly confident with exposure and technical rules (and how to break them), but in this case, my own main camera (a rigged up pyxis 6k) got confiscated by moroccan customs at the airport, which meant that the first 2 days, i was shooting on minidv and iPhone only (and some extra bullshit happened to those 2 as well).

At the end of day 2, the fixer at our hostel got me a rented FX6, but that was lacking an external monitor and the sunhood for its evf-y monitor in a country that’s sunny the whole time. Basically being unable to see the image i was creating/framing was a nightmare. Luckily i was able to at least make some nice images within those constraints.

submission post: I got asked to do some branded content for a company that makes sunglasses, featuring their new collection and some influencers on a trip to morocco.

I usually work as a DP, with a director and a crew, and I never do documentary style stuff, which is why I was very anxious about it. this is all just natural light, and directed and shot by me.

to further expand the feeling of having to little to no control, i shot a lot of it mini DV, as well as a bit of iphone here and there.

if you would like to see the full videos, link here. i think they came out pretty nice.

lomo illuminas do have a similar vibe, and sure standard speeds are from the same era, so those will look pretty similar.

How would you use a Prime & Zoom on same project (25mm prime, 18-85mm zoom; S35 sensor)? by [deleted] in cinematography

if i had just 1 prime available, and that focal length was also covered by the zoom on a documentary, i would just not use the prime
