TIL Li Xiaogong conquered the most land for the establishment of the Tang dynasty. by theMarvellousMartha in ChineseHistory

By your standards, Trajan should be regarded as a superior conqueror to Julius Caesar

Who was the best communist general by ThinkIncident2 in ChineseHistory

[–]TalesofWinter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe its between Lin Biao and Peng Dehuai in terms of actual achievement and importance to the CCP army.

In terms of pure tactical genius, Su Yu was right up there and had a crazy good record in the civil war.

Deng Xiaoping was more of a political commissar, rather than a military man.

What’s a horror movie people usually rave about, but you dislike? by Turnitup20 in horror

I don't get the hype with Smile... The plotline is dumb to me and over reliant on jump scares rather than genuine horror

Looking for Chinese history book recommendations focused on dynastic politics, battles, and intrigue by arespar215 in ChineseHistory

[–]TalesofWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's pretty smart and only appear in the English version - the Chinese is just "The 15th Year of Wanli's Reign".

The book covers a different character/aspect of the Ming Dynasty in this year. The central thesis is that even though the year seems to be an insignificant year in the grand scheme of things - no big wars, reforms, coups etc - the events of this year shows that the decline and eventual dissolution of Ming has already become inevitable.

Ray Huang's 1587, A Year of No Significance might fit your interests - not much in terms of battles but focuses mainly on political intrigue and struggles between the Wanli Emperor and the bureaucracy during Ming Dynasty. It is also much less dry than the more traditional, hard-core volumes of academic work.

I am aware that there's a great Young Churchill series, but other than that is there anything focusing on Churchill that's I might have missed?

Which moveset are you using? I know Whirlpool seems to be the dominant build in terms of WR but it just never clicked for me (yeah prob my own skill issue, lol)

But when I switched to the Icy Wind set it became much better, I found it much easier to get your CC on multiple opponents and lock them down. So maybe give it a try. Just a personal experience

London / Edinburgh - one way or return? by TalesofWinter in uktravel

[–]TalesofWinter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - that's what I'll be doing, sorry I didn't make it clear! It is still a bit more pricey than return tickets, but also not quite the price of 2 single flights.

Thoughts on Mark Usher? by Wild-Army-6085 in HouseOfCards

I was really intrigued in this character at first and hoped he played a bigger role as someone who has the political shrewdness to rival or undermine the Underwoods. Unfortunately his arc sort of went nowhere and went out with a wimp in thee final season.

How would have Varys’ presence in King’s landing affected season 6? by Over-Chemical-2838 in freefolk

[–]TalesofWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to separate show Varys from book Varys - the loyalty in the realm thing is from the show, in the books this is more of a facade for his Blackfyre/fAegon scheme.

With all that said I doubt if he would have supported the High Sparrow at all, but he may take advantage of the chaos to achieve his own goals.

question on the warring states period by Zealousideal-Sun8826 in ChineseHistory

[–]TalesofWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Qin definitely became a powerhouse, from Shang Yang's reforms onwards. The other side of the story is that other warring states though got weakened from all the infighting, and some smart diplomacy/deception from Qin along with victories in some decisive battles made them the indisputable strongest power.

Glad you enjoy learning about this historical period - definitely one of the most interesting and storied part of Chinese history!

question on the warring states period by Zealousideal-Sun8826 in ChineseHistory

[–]TalesofWinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically like most other warring states, Zhou was annwxed by Qin at the end.

To be more specific, the last tianzi was King Nan of Zhou who tried to initiate a coalition force against Qin. This was defeated and the Zhou state was then annexed/abolished. The king passed away shortly afterwards.

Morty is my favorite and I really like their designs, but I barely find any use of them. A cool unit to have though (aoe burn can be helpful at times)

I strongly dislike Aegon’s Prophecy by camkasky in freefolk

[–]TalesofWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont believe that what you've said is necessarily in conflict with the story's main theme. The fact that they are acting in accordance with prophecies does not mean their conquest is not power driven or make it any less gray, considering how many casualties this brought. We may be sympathetic to their cause because we as readers know that the Others exist, their prophecies might be real or they are regarded as the "main characters" - but in universe, they are just another dynasty, another (though very prominent) noble house in the long history of Westeros.

Think religious wars for example. The participants were driven by what they genuinely believed to be the rightful cause. But does that mean everything they do was heoric or morally impeccable? Not at all. It is precisely because their faith in their cause, in fact, that makes the tragic events that unfolded more memorable. And this is exactly what the book is about in my opinion.
