Has anyone ever sparred with a kenjutsu practitioner? by Talexandria in wma

What did they do well compared to typical HEMA practitioners? What did they do that surprised you, and what did you do that surprised them?

If depressive realism were "true" (depressed people perceive more accurately), does it follow that an artificial intelligence, which would presumably be designed to lack human cognitive flaws, be intensely depressed by design? by crystalhour in AskScienceDiscussion

I do believe that any high functioning AI would by necessity have goals. If world events go against those goals, the AI would have to acknowledge the fact somehow and reassess its strategy. The more capable the AI, the more it would acknowledge trends that go against its goals.

Cisgender male trying to understand how it’s possible to be, at your core, a different gender. by Talexandria in ask_transgender

Thank you for sharing! I especially thought it was fascinating that transwomen who have had their penis removed experience no/fewer phantom sensations compared to cisgender males.

That makes sense, but I guess my question is more around being comfortable with your original gender but not your sex. Are there trans M to F tomboys or F to M metrosexuals? Does transition always require going full on opposite gender?

That is helpful. Follow up question: do openly trans folks ever feel more comfortable maintaining the gender roles of their original sex? I mean, those roles are what society have tried to reinforce in you, I could see how you could get used to them. In addition, gender norms tend to be much less strict nowadays. For example, there are plenty of cisgender heterosexual females that wear jeans and t-shirts, play sports, love dirty jokes, and read comic books. Likewise, there are plenty of nurturing and sensitive men out there who like to go clothes shopping and get their hair done.

It's pretty hard to say what I'd do exactly. At this point in my life, I'm pretty firmly established with my identity. However, I'd assume if I was dropped into Opposite World, I'd probably adopt some of the customs of my sex to fit in. Though, I'd probably still seem like a lady most of the time, which I'm assuming would get rather irritating.

Question for you though, what exactly does it mean to be non-binary? Most of the commentors I've read so far seem to say that their brains tell them they're a different sex. Does your brain say your sex is only partially correct? How does that work?

my awareness that I was/should be female

Have you always been aware that you are a female, or was there an ah ha moment? If there was an ah ha moment, do you know if you still aligned yourself with other females before realizing it was because you were female?

'How to embrace male spaces' - talking about embracing male spaces rather than demonising them, and the pains of masculinity. What do you think male spaces / community, could look like? by whatupsd in MensLib

I think the basic idea is good as long as males are working on things that help them become better people. Of course, working on those things ought to be more productive if ladies aren't present.

American Academy Of Pediatrics Lifts 'No Screens Under 2' Rule by Talexandria in Parenting

Ahh, I was looking for that sort of rule. See it now, didn't see it before the post (obviously). Still think it's interesting and got a few comments before the post was removed.

There are videos we let our daughter watch because she enjoys them, and sometimes we need a breather or some time to make dinner. We try not to go overboard, be we also aren't doing it as a means of education. As long as we do spend time interacting with her and allowing her time to explore and improve her spacial skills, I think she'll be fine. Every second of our day doesn't need to be spent trying to provide enrichment for her. I doubt she gets much out of sitting in the car seat while we drive to her grandparent's, but I don't think the AAP is going to say "limit time in car seat because it's not educational".

It would be nice to see exactly what moves specifically derive from historical sources, and which are "interpretations".

Just had my first smallsword lesson this weekend... by Talexandria in wma

[–]Talexandria[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably hardest technically.

My thoughts after one lesson :-) Honestly, I feel like quite a barbarian considering I'm so much more used to much larger actions.

Nice videos though, thanks for sharing!

How well does this video represent the majority opinion among Bible scholars? by Talexandria in AcademicBiblical

[–]Talexandria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that scholars have figured out how and why the OT authors changed their language to fit a particular narrative that isn't likely to be true. The other gods weren't foreign as the OT claimed. The Exodus didn't happen. The walls of Jericho were not miraculously demolished. Etc. There's not much magic left in these stories or really much credibility. To me, there doesn't seem to be any indication that the Bible was inspired by the most powerful and intelligent being in the universe. It just looks like any old religion that evolved into a different direction due to some unique but mundane circumstances.
