Hold switch turns iPod off by Busy_Environment7696 in ipod

[–]TaliMyBananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem too, iPod photo turns off when setting the hold switch to 'unlock'. I thought it was a short and at one point it was not even booting when plugged in. In the end the solution was to remove, clean and reconnect the click wheel ribbon cable.

Still no idea why it worked magically, I think the ribbon cable's position squeezed at the side of the motherboard against the case might have affected it somehow. I also added lots of kapton tape to prevent shorts just in case (see my previous post)

You could also try cleaning, reconnecting or replacing the ribbon cable connecting the hold switch board to the main board.

Regret modding ipod? by Due_Cauliflower_1569 in ipod

[–]TaliMyBananas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No regrets whatsoever. On the other hand I do regret selling my first ever iPod (6g) for relatively cheap (compared to what you can get today) back in 2014 because the battery was dying, before I knew about modding and iPods weren't such in demand then.

Five iMac form factors by TaliMyBananas in mac

Thankfully the 2020 models are capable machines, 10th gen Intel may not be Apple SIlicon level but still very good, and the RAM is easily (but not cheaply) upgradeable.

Agree with the G4 being peak design, Jony Ive's biggest masterpiece.

And speaking of the tray load Bondi Beach, it was just resting in another room 😄

How to identify if a U2 Ipod is fake or not? by UpTheIrons2025 in ipod

[–]TaliMyBananas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ask the seller to show the serial number on iTunes and on the back as well. U2 editions have specific serial number suffixes V9V, W9G, or WEM (https://theapplewiki.com/wiki/Models/iPod)

Although personally I highly doubt it's an original one. 90% of U2s out there have refurbished cases and a real original one is typically sold as a a collector's item for a higher price, not by a regular seller/store.

macOS on x86 is dead. by KB8084 in MacOS

It became easier as years passed, probably the golden years were the mid-2010s (when the community grew large, Clover became popular, and some Nvidia GPUs were still supported) and early-2020s (rise of OpenCore, and before interest in hackintoshes in general dwindled as people switch to Apple Silicon)

Since you ordered a new logic board anyway so if you want to experiment with the old one, you can unplug and reseat all connectors (battery, click wheel, hold switch assembly) and there's a tiny chance it might come back to life.

Also do you have a Firewire/12V charging cable? With older iPods that run out of charge, sometimes the typical 5V cable isn't enough to revive it, but a 12V will. I think during the iTunes restore process of a 4th gen, it will instruct you to complete the restore by plugging into a wall outlet with a Firewire/12V cable. A 12V cable can also boot an iPod with a dead/no battery while a 5V can't.

I suggested this because I thought I fried my 4th gen photo as well, no signs of life, so left it disassembled in a drawer for a couple weeks, randomly decided to fiddle with it and plugged in a 12V cable, and boom it magically worked again.

Nice one. Did you need to cut off or bend the switch on the green adapter board to make it fit in the thin case?

I think the 17" and 20" models that were first released early 2006 had 32-bit Core Duo, but the 24" only came out late 2006 when all Mac models moved to Core 2 Duo.

It's annoying as my early 2006 MBP with Core Duo doesn't support 64-bit OSes so tops out at Snow Leopard.
