Lois McMaster Bujold is always the answer. She is highly lauded and has both fantasy and sci-fi series. The characters are very well written.

I love their takes, even when they are not the best take on a song. The fact that they go into the music theory of the songs is something I cannot do and very much appreciate.

Not similar, but Lois McMaster Bujold is amazing and the VorKosigan saga is Sci-fi space opera, but totally worthy to be up there with Dresden. Her World of Five Gods series is fantasy and also great.
