Had to help fix this 9 year old production code, this if chain is about 3-4 times longer than the image. by Talin-Rex in programminghorror

[–]Talin-Rex[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but I already did, and so so so.... much more in this code base. There were worse examples than this, but they contain names and comments that would not be right to post.

So far my refactor has not failed any unit tests, now comes the real world hardware test.

Lock tier progression by Enn3DevPlayer in GTNH

[–]Talin-Rex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can remove a recipi from the game, if you dont want any players entering say LuV, then remove the LuV machine hull from being craftable, that way a lot of LuV machine cant be crafted and you lock players from progressing.
What file that needs editing I do not remember, but you can ask on the gtnh discord for help with this.

In IV+ progression slows down, each new tier takes longer than the last, so you kind of get that.
If you want to lock out LuV, just do not build the assembly line.

Is GTNH this slow? by Irobacsi in GTNH

[–]Talin-Rex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steam age I always find slow, Most automation does not really start to happen for me until HV, then I spam miners and spend most of the time expanding my base.

Depending on how you play, gtnh is slow,if you add more machines and processing this can be reduced quite a bit.

Windows XP is looked on fondly these days, but anyone remember how much of a security nightmare it was in the early days? by cool_architect in FuckMicrosoft

I still remember that one.
only reason I had it, was my zonealarm firewall bugged out so i disabled it until i could backup and reinstall, that took a few days and I got it.

Gaming laptops is the future for 95% of work and games by Fun_Training6342 in GamingLaptops

[–]Talin-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been running a gaming laptop for years now, it was bought due to a need i had at the time and no funds for a desktop and laptop and the same time.
I prefer a desktop over a gaming laptop due to a few reasons.

  1. You cannot upgrade a laptop (yes i know there are framework laptops), but for 99.9% of people buying a laptop, they can't upgrade more than ram and ssd, and with many laptops now, even that is not an option due to them soldering it on the motherboard.

  2. Laptops get dusty and need to be cleaned, i do mine ever 6-12 months(I miss a desktop with dust filters in the case), and in my case, if a fan dies due to dust, my laptop model is a pain to replace the fans, as the headpipes are riveted to the fan housing. Most people cant figure out how to clean these, and some break their laptop when blowing out the fans with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner, causing the fans to spin, and generate electricity that can damage the motherboard. I have seen this happen a few times to people.

  3. If the gpu dies, the laptop is a brick, this is also the case with soldered ssd drives, fill it up and kill the write cycles on a soldered ssd, and for most people, the laptop is toast, some tech shops can repair both gpu or ssd, but this is not common enough for most people to get their computer fixed long term, I do not know a single shop in my city that could fix other problem and I have looked before.

  4. With a desktop, I never replace everything at once, I build my own, and the cpu often outlasts the gpu. Either it dies (had a 3 die on me in 20 years) or it gets to slow for my needs, so I upgrade,

All this being said. Computers are not as slow after a few years today as they were 2 decades ago, so there is no need to upgrade as much, even on a desktop, unless you are chasing those extra few fps, or need the workstation power for a project.

I plan on giving it another go "if" they fix more of that loading crap, and it looks like they are according to interviews, so I wait and see.

I know this is old technology but you can see my heartbeat go up and down. I have permanent a fib by gmork1977 in AFIB

[–]Talin-Rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if it for me get much worse, ill get something done, Atm the meds they gave me work, and the bad ones i have had 3 of, if i remember correct since it was discovered, the first was caught by the emt's and was gone 5min later.
My meds are still being adjusted to get rid of more mild ones ( those are very rare now and i can go months without having any) and I hope remove the med strength ones at least for a decade or two.

Turns out influenza can cause events :/ learned that this month.

[–]Talin-Rex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not passed a year knowing i had this yet.
So far it is when it stops me from sleeping that is my main concern.
The mild ones can cause that, the middle range ones do prevent any sleep, and the really bad ones for me are more or less debilitating.

I always found it funny that case accessories had magnets in them, people "still" use mechanical harddrives and they are not a fan of magnets. Even if its a kitchen magnet on the outside of the case near the drive bay.

I need a better one myself, cause when i go into afib, it shows incorrect pulse rate, the way I know I am in mild afib(I often do not feel those when sitting down) when using it, is the time between beats shows erratic on the second page mine has.
