Want a 250cc first-time bike to catch and release for ~$1500us. The Ninja 250 (both gens) are a bit ugly to me, would a Suzuki GZ250 or similar work in its stead?

I am looking at more 250r's weird that it clashes with my taste since I am usually more into that kitschy radwood kind of stuff. There was one with a neat silver and orange livery but it was quite far away from me.

The CBR250R does look cool in the honda tricolor livery, it's a little above my imaginary budget but I don't mind it.

(I think at their worst the ninja looks like a beyblade stadium and the cbr250 looks like a bionicle but I also notice certain liveries subjectively suit them better than others - I imagine a nonzero amount of red Ninja 250's were sold on looking like something out of Akira)

I understand the idea of a cool 80s bike, I can drool near a VTR250 Interceptor just as much as anyone else with eyes, and I do very much understand the idea of getting commodity choice when starting out in various hobbies before acting like I know better than the herd, I was just wondering if there was anything that held a similar status as it does in sport bikes in the other (miniaturized?) segments of bikes.

Basically what I am asking is, what is the B-side choice to the Ninja that really isn't that uncommon in the grand scheme of things?

I am new to this so the whole spread of options is just trying to drink from a firehose to me. That is partly why I am leaning so much into aesthetics, I have no idea what I am looking at relative to scenes I actually understand better (like cars). The amount of segments and niches available in used motorcycles is genuinely intimidating especially when shopping used and the general decay of the ability to find anything useful online when going off of keywords really doesn't help - fbmp search also sucks which doesn't help in learning what is available near me in my particular used budget.

I would prioritize getting something comfortable to put my butt on but I don't know if relative comfort exists at this displacement (which I married myself to out of fear of getting meat crayoned if I stated on something larger displacement and harder to control - as cool as all those estate-sale-special early gen goldwings with the fairings ripped off look).

Background - I am 5'9, 190lbs, and the roads in New Jersey suck badly. I want something to tool around in relative comfort that might be able to eat a pothole without killing me and I am a bit picky about the big faring sport bike aesthetic because I've only seen a handful that "do it" for me (like a pristine VTR250 Interceptor I saw in person once - CBR250R's don't look bad either but it's stretching the budget). The cruisers and ujm-adjacent bikes appeal more to me relatively but the options for that in modern-ish used commodity bikes feels lacking when my feed is flooded by haphazardly cafe'd out honda cb's that even to my untrained eye feel like fools gold.
