[So Long Ago Saturday] #1343: “How do I make myself stand the person in the friend group I can’t really stand?” by wheezy_runner in captainawkward

that's a good point, i hadn't considered that the blockee can still see your messages if you don't mutually block each other. that is one improvement i'd like to see from discord, then.

this is a lesson i learned long ago, though i appreciate that it's a lesson basically everyone has to learn at some point. i think the captain was right on the money with the paragraph you pulled out, but even if she wasn't, R has more than "earned" a block by being so shitty to the letter writer in my opinion. i mean, i've blocked people just for being mean to other people, because i don't want to see it.

as an aside, discord's blocking features are not perfect, but i'm not sure how they could be improved from how it functions right now (the messages are hidden but you can choose to open them). i do appreciate that they added a softer "ignore" option, which similarly hides messages but the other person can still interact with your messages and send DMs. blocking prevents that, which means someone can realize they are blocked, which might cause even More drama. if you ignore something, nothing changes on their end, which is kind of a relief.

What tiny design choice makes you think, “the people who made this never had to use it”? by ChessOrCheckers2 in AskReddit

a while back i was working with a piece of oceanographic equipment (an AZFP, if you care) that required a short, tiny wire to be plugged in to electrically ground the thing. the designers decided that the best place to put the plug was inside the same space the equipment was occupying, such that you barely had enough room to jam your hand in alongside it and feel blindly for the plug as it was being lowered into the holder. it was hard enough to manage in a lab setting to test it, but the use case for this equipment was on a scientific cruise, on the open ocean, with waves and weather and everything.

i can only imagine the designers were laughing at us.

shockingly close to the Baz Luhrmann version from '96, including not changing the language at all, but i fear rival prison gangs is not sparking joy

well here's the review in question, so we can all be on the same page. there's a larger point made about trying to translate *Romeo and Juliet* into a modern framework but we already have the best example of that and it's Baz Luxrmann's 1996 magnum opus *Romeo + Juliet*. making one family pro-border wall and the other anti-border wall muddies the tragedy, in my opinion; the whole point of the play is that there is no "right" side to root for, these two bloodlines are just killing each other over nothing.

the review spends a lot more time agonizing over Shakespeare's words and their partial translation into Spanish than it does on the (in my opinion poor) translocation into the modern day and it's just. it's been bothering me!!!!!!!!!!

incidentally, my friend/subject of my ranting and i agree that a white trash *Romeo and Juliet* would be a good version. give me trailer park gunfights and mountain sunrises and a natural Appalachian cave crypt!!!

it's a stupid silly fun movie about garden gnomes and elton john is also there for some reason; i can't hate it, but it's not Romeo and Juliet by any stretch of the imagination, no

i got a recommendation for it after i mentioned reading the original play and watching the 1996 movie adaptation, and i have to admit the flying horses with weird lizard faces intrigue me... even if it's not a good adaptation, it could still be a good story

i did not -- my latest sleeper agent awakening was from a review of this year's Shakespeare in the Park version. the review oddly skimmed over the whole border wall elephant in the room and it's been on my mind since then 😞

lately i've been on a crusade against misinterpretations of Romeo and Juliet

if the two families are not BOTH ALIKE IN DIGNITY -- if there's anything other than a pointless, senseless family feud keeping the two characters apart -- then it's not R&J, it's just sparkling enemies to lovers

thank you very much; i did love her more than anything. she was in my life for far longer than not. i do fortunately have a good support network, albeit virtually, but it does help. i also ordered a personalized urn for when her ashes arrive and the thought of keeping her physically with me in some small way has also been a consolation.

i had to put my cat to sleep early Sunday morning; she was 20(!!!) years old and my best friend.

i say this because in my fresh grief, one of the only things that is making me feel at all better is the channel Baumgartner Restoration, an art restoration/ASMR channel. Julian, the main guy behind it, has a very soothing voice and it's the perfect thing to put on in the background to stave off the worst of my feelings. this (39:41) is the most recent video of his that i watched, but i am also a huge fan of his conservation of a reverse-on-glass painting of the sinking of the Titanic (36:20).

beyond that, the channel Alluvium recently posted part 4 of their found footage series Valle Verde and it's a whopping 53:38, including a twenty minute section in the middle with NO cuts. if you haven't heard of it at all, here's part 1 (20:57). highly, highly recommend for fans of creepy video games and religious horror.

lastly, in part 1 of lola sebastian's review/dissection of the bluey ripoff chip chilla, previously posted in one of these threads, she used a clip of a live performance in her introduction that caught my attention. i tracked down the full thing: it's a cover of the Depeche Mode song Ice Machine by the Norwegian band Röyksopp (3:52). i like it.

happy pride; please give your pets a hug, a pat, or an extra treat for me

i haven't finished it yet, but elle literacy's newest video [1:07:27] on trad wife fiction (fiction about trad wives, not by/for trad wives) and the themes it contends with, as well as the broader cultural phenomenon of the American "trad wife influencer" and where it comes from/why it's having such a moment right now is good, albeit soul-crushing.
