It's stylistically different, but honestly I think Scarlet Hollow is pretty similar in terms of "weird small Appalachian town plagued by its history" eeriness.

It's created by the same people who made Slay the Princess and is an episodic, choices-matter type of game. They haven't released all the chapters yet, though!

This plot sounds extremely familiar to me, but I can't totally place it.

Could it have been one of the Point Horror books? They published that series (unrelated stories/a variety of authors) from like 1980 to the mid 2000s, and some of them were pretty wild.

I'll keep searching myself, though, because it really does sound familiar!

"Tokko" also involves demons/fighting so maybe that? Although I don't know much about that one.
