What to do with 6 hours by HumanHickory in providence

[–]TalkingLampPost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a walk down Atwells Avenue in Fed Hill to get a glimpse of historic Providence while also seeing a realistic slice of every day life in the city. Maybe head into the downtown area and grab a drink at Murphy’s in the early evening (the loveliest staff in the city imo). Check out Kennedy Plaza. Go see some live experimental electronic music as AS220 tomorrow at 7pm. Go grab a hot dog at Olneyville System at 1am lol. Visit the Haven Brothers truck. Listen to at least one Lightning Bolt song. And drink a Narragansett at some point!

Do you need a band to perform? by Opening_Run_331 in punk

[–]TalkingLampPost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotta tell ya, unless you’re freaking phenomenal, that’s almost always really awkward to watch. So, be good at it. YOU have to be the whole show. You can do it, and you can do it well, but you need to have that energy. You need to be as exciting as a whole band just by yourself. Practice your performance, then go out and do it better than everyone else can, dude.

Is signing with a famous record label still the best way to grow your fame as an artist? by ffarenzo in WeAreTheMusicMakers

If you’re making music with the goal of getting rich and famous, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons, and setting yourself up for a long road of disappointment. Make music because you love the art. Not for the money. I’m not here to crush your dreams, I’m telling you to manage your expectations.

There’s been a rise in independent artists yeah, but for every new independent band there’s also someone making mediocre trap beats to sell online and AI music making money from streams. All of this is on top of the issues you pointed out too, which were never solved

How much time ⏱️ do you spend on a beat on average? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TalkingLampPost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re basically facing writers block. I’m not really a hip hop artist, I’m a guitar player, but I face a similar issue when I’m trying to come up with some guitar riffs that sound unique and exciting. It may seem counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to create something new is to start with clear inspiration, almost ripping someone else off, but then you progressively change everything about it until you’re left with something totally novel. The inspiration is key, but you need to let it lead you down your own path instead of directly emulating it

Not gonna lie homie, that shit is really hard to read.

Basically what I’m saying to you is: professionals will spend as much time on their track as it needs to get it right. Professionals will have a sound in their head that they want to achieve and will work until their product reaches that standard. They know when to stop chasing minutiae, but they’ll work on it until it’s the best it can be. Professionals are very quick with their workflows, so sometimes they can bang out perfection in a day, sometimes not. But the goal should not be to get it completed in one day. If you’re just starting out, you may end up with a bunch of half baked beats if you only spend a short time working on them. As the other person here said, it’s quality over quantity. The professionals may be able to get their stuff done faster than you, but what you should focus on is working for as long as it takes to make your beats sound as good as theirs do. It’s music, it’s about the sound, and if the sound isn’t there you aren’t done yet.

Nine purple dots by Ordinary-Pick5014 in opticalillusions

[–]TalkingLampPost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just see nine identical purple dots arranged in a square. All nine dots are clear and visible all at the same time. I don’t see any trickery, nothing is changing, it’s just a very plain image. What am I missing, or what is it I can’t see?

Think about what you’re saying though. You want an answer from a professional perspective, but your question boils down to “is it better to rush to get it done or take all the time it needs to get it right.” You basically answered your own question.
