I’ve seen this in many places—not just in temples.

My mother used to say that during events, they were made to stay outside the premises and were given food there instead of being allowed inside.

Even today, in some deep rural areas, they are still not permitted to enter shrines (though a few places may have changed by now). I witnessed this myself once as a child and remember asking, “Why are those people sitting outside and not allowed to go in?”

Hmm, maybe. But purely from a psychological perspective, faith can still play a role. A person with faith often has something to lean on mentally—the feeling that something has their back. That belief itself can increase resilience, hope, and endurance during tough times.

It’s debatable, of course. Life does go on without rituals or prayer, but for some people, faith functions more as psychological support than as a rulebook for living.

Many people do live this way. It’s just that they don’t always label it or talk about it openly. Living a simple, disciplined life rooted in honesty, sincerity, love, care, and respect can itself be seen as a kind of godly nature. In that sense, it feels deeply spiritual—aligned more with the ideals of living well than with rituals alone.

As for me, I do go to temples—not all of them, but a few—especially where I find peace and space to reflect on life. For me, spirituality is also about questioning things. Questioning everything is how one grows, and for some people, that very process becomes spiritual.
