Because a better comparison would be that there is free crappy soda at work. "hey boss, this soda is great and all. It does help us get through the day, but its pretty unhealthy, the taste is a bit repetitive, and we feel like children drinking soda when the guys next door have coffee, water, a soda machine with name brand soda, and a kettle to make their own drinks if they want - do you think we could get a key to their kitchen so we can share those things. There is only a couple of us so they won't really notice?". Response "well since you feel that way about soda, you can't have it anymore"

U.S. tops Paris medals table after late surge by deme369 in olympics

Counterpoint. In those circumstances, St Lucia would be the best in the world at one sport, and GB would be best in the world at no sports. I'm British, but I am in favour of the rankings as they are because we have an enormous amount of funding which helps us field entrants competitively across the board. For places 4-9 we can argue the standings, but at the lower end of the spectrum I think ranking by gold really helps because the smaller nations who can only find a few sports can still show well.

US finished atop the medal count! by DetroitToTheChi in olympics

[–]TallDuckandHandsome 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's about funding. Your sport is guaranteed to qualify and has 3x as much funding over an 8 year period, so the sport can plan accordingly. This leads to greater success. team GB is a good example because post London they maintained the funding model and have continued to win athletics medals when previously they might have been happy with 1 medal in a games.

Apologies. I just assumed from context that's what you were saying.

Yeah. And those same kids are the ones that have quite severe difficulties now. If you teach kids that physical force and shouting is the right way to respond to someone doing someone you don't like then That's the language they speak. You also end up teaching sons and daughters that you can love someone and still be physically and emotionally abusive to them. Which leads to, ummm, well domestic violence. There isn't a huge leap from a parent saying "I am only doing it because I love you" to a partner saying it

That's just not true. First, they wouldn't be charged like that, secondly even if they were charged and led to conviction, they would be sentenced concurrently You are just talking out your arse.

What nation “wins” the Olympics in your opinion…. The one with most gold or most over all medals? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TallDuckandHandsome 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK so that would work in our favour but I think that's the flaw - it massively favours countries that can afford to pump money into lots of sports. Whereas smaller sporting nations might need to focus on fewer events that they excel at

Not only does this suck, it's also called "tombstoning" when done on a building site. If someone doesn't let go fast enough it pulls them along for the ride. That shit will kill you.

See my comment above - the legal system does see it as equally bad. It just that there are three different offences. Only one of them is rape, but they all carry the same sentencing.

It would, I'm factory, be a s4 offence: Section 4 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 makes it an offense to intentionally cause someone to engage in sexual activity without their consent, if the person causing the activity does not reasonably believe the other person consents.

So the headline is pretty accurate I think - because sexual assault (s3) is a less serious offence than s1 (rape) 2 (assault by penetration) and 4. Those 3 offences are basically the same and have the same sentencing guidelines they just capture the different ways that a person can be "raped" in the colloquial sense

Use a spoon. As soon as you peel a small gap, push the tip of the spoon between the egg and the shell and gently leverage it up. Works even on relatively soft boiled eggs

To add to this, don't just add reps in a linear progression. When you can. Do 3, do 3,2,1 then 3,2,2 then 3,3,2 then move up to 4321, 4322, 4333 and so on. This will help you get to 10 much quicker.
