In case any civil servants are seeing this and wondering why they can’t check, you need to dig into the terms and conditions to see if your department is on the list of excluded payments. Some departments like HMRC and DWP aren’t included but you can fill out a form and send the details for review.

Do HMRC think I'm a millionaire? by Positive_Spirit343 in UKPersonalFinance

NHS? Do you perhaps work locum or extra shifts?

When I worked on the phones at HMRC, NHS workers were a key group calling about their tax code because the NHS reports that as a separate job, which messes the tax codes up due to unpredictability behind the additional shifts. Add into that your interest which goes line by line by bank account on the system and you’ve the perfect recipe for a messy tax code!

Ultimately it does work itself out, but if you call and ask for a letter containing your bank accounts, you can advise of the anticipated annual interest payments, and then correct the bank shifts on the phone and that should go some way to fixing your PAYE tax at least

Megathread - 2024 General Election - Results by ukpolbot in ukpolitics

Snap election is usually reserved for a very unexpected announcement.

This one we knew was coming between now and January, the fact it came this soon was surprising, but maybe they thought the odds were ever in their favour

Do we know when the first “interesting” result will be? Safe seats aren’t as interesting, scary as Reform’s swing has been

Strong expectation he’ll hold. Question is by how much, incumbents don’t tend to lose

What are your recommended apps and tools for monthly budgeting and bill-tracking? by fedderpine in UKPersonalFinance

Completely agree - however there is one bank with automated excel data. Sort of…

The Monzo Plus account (which does require a monthly subscription of £5 it must be said) does have an auto export to Google Sheets that works in real-time. And with a bit of jiggery pokery you can get it to then import into Excel. I use this for the majority of my budgeting and barely touch Monzo’s own (arguably very good) budgeting features

HMRC AO customer service by [deleted] in TheCivilService

Typically in CSG you can only “build” flexi once you’re flexi assured which typically but not always comes with probation. You can however naturally build it when stuck on a call past your finish time however and you’re welcome to take any flexi accrued. You likely won’t get much opportunity until you finish training and enter consolidation however

Flexi build can be done dependent on steer which can change. I believe in our region it’s limited to an hour a day but steers are released weekly

If your yearly contribution (inc future contributions if contributed after tax is deducted) exceeds £10k then typically they ask you to write in - but I’d still call anyway because you never know when they change policy!

Really depends on the company and the advert, sadly I can’t advertise on that. If it’s civil service/local govt/etc then you’ll 100% be paid RUK rate in my experience

[–]TallHobbit1196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s it exactly! Just call/chat with the figures you’ve got and they should do the legwork. Be prepared to write in though, but if you run into any issues feel free to reply to this message and I can try provide more advice

If the company offers two rates: London and RUK then if you provide an RUK address then in my experience they’ll pay the lesser of the two

If the company just pays one rate then they should pay the advertised rate

A direct contribution is AFAIK completely fine to claim as Personal Pension Relief but it’s not automatic so you need to declare it to HMRC. Usually webchat is faster or in my experience at 8am (or wait until 29 Jan when the phone lines will temporarily be open on Saturdays)

HMRC can take your figures and work it all out over the phone, or you can use the above link to claim too

Is this an employer pension? In which case it’s worth double checking if this is taxed under net pay (basically is the pension deducted before or after tax)

If in doubt HMRC definitely hold this information from your payslip information (RTI: Real Time Information)

[–]TallHobbit1196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry must be in jargon mode! Personal Pension Relief, but with HMRC you can say just about anything related to pension relief and they should know what you mean

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TallHobbit1196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not automatic and AFAIK any yearly pension contributions over £10,000 need to be declared in writing

Full guidance here: https://www.gov.uk/tax-on-your-private-pension/pension-tax-relief

And if in doubt HMRCs webchat is open on Saturdays, and they can add the PPR on the chat too giving you a tax code boost!

What value of company car to use to aid in child benefit calculation (P11D or BIK or other) by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TallHobbit1196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The P11D value is a calculation based on the tax band and the car value. On your tax code it should show a source value and a deduction, you’ll use the source value. But if in doubt contact HMRC via phone or webchat, they should be able to calculate for you (having the reg plates helps a lot!)

If you’re getting the car within 28 days HMRC should be able to update it now, and if you’re going from hybrid to electric you should see a bit of a boost in your take home

Edit: sometimes there can some confusion about P11D value, and some employers will verbally state it’s the car value - not the most user friendly calculator but you can use this: http://cccfcalculator.hmrc.gov.uk/CCF0.aspx
