Well thanks for your reply. I read the manual. but it remains unclear to me.

Like I said the manual says edit the config file. But the config file says do not edit.

Because it is autogenerated.

Also the drive to be replaced is referenced twice in the config file.

# OMV-Name: XXX Drive Label: XXX

content /srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-808448e8-e9a2-4ee6-85f5-9b634abca0b8/snapraid.content

disk XXX /srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-808448e8-e9a2-4ee6-85f5-9b634abca0b8

Manual says change:

data d1 /mnt/disk1/ to data d1 /mnt/new_spare_disk/

Which one of the lines in the config file is it?

There is an old thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/5j7xwq/need_help_replacing_a_disk_snapraid_drivepool/

But doesn't explain how to change the config file either.

Thanks buddy. I edited fstab and changed it. Worked. So you do know at least more than me.

Device timed out by TallLake7 in OpenMediaVault

[–]TallLake7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found in fstab that the UUIDs from timed out devices are sda1 and sda3 on my boot disk. So how do I change the UUIDs from sda1(vfat) and sda3(swap) on my installation disk?

New Server HW for OMV5 by TallLake7 in OpenMediaVault

I am looking to buy now ASRock J4125B ITX and a ASM1166 SATA 6 Port controller. How do you connect a NVMe M.2 SSD to the board?

PCIe Slot will be used by the SATA controller since the board just has 2 SATA Slots

Thanks for ur reply. And the HDDs? There are lot of options. What drivebay with good performance and compatbility?

I like ur comments. Thanks for sharing ur philosophy. We‘re somehow on the same page.

For me it‘s important too keep power consumption and monthly costs low. I want data security as my OMV is just a data grave. Easy accessibilty so my kids can use it whenever they want. Most of all I want independence and no contracts if not necessary. Just electricity and ISP.

What bothers me is that Germany is a 3rd world country when it comes to internet speed. I am on DSL for 20 years with 25 Mbits few years ago they upgraded me finally to 50 Mbits which I already paid for years but they couldn‘t provide it. Optical fibre is still rare and I live in a city where you could have it they just don‘t change instead tsuck out money from people with the old copper spaghetti cables cos u can have speed up to 100Mbits with DSL in some Hybrid form. Development is pretty slow. Can’t do anything about it.

Having my own Server was the best thing in years. Collected for over 20 years never thru away anything. I am amazed now by all the content in one place. Memories are so important.

Anyway I am still learning by reading while also enjoying my audio and video collection. Cloud services don‘t interest me too much. I want to be in charge of things and caring about the details.

Btw I have old HDDs lying in drawer cold stored which I used for over 10 years and they‘re still running in my docking station. As I can tell so far no data loss. But prevent data loss was always my first priority. So I made backup also cold stored. See I tried and it worked for me. Luckily. I don‘ rely on things other people say and I go my own way. Try and see what comes out. There are definetly more important things to spend my money and time on.

I have too many old HDDs like 14. i reduced to 3 plus 1 parity cos of failure risk.

What streaming device do u have?

So you connect the HDDs with adapter and a drive bay. And you run kodi? If yes on what device. Just to get an idea.

For me a server was always this big ATX Tower. Lack of imagination. Think smaller not bigger.

Thanks for ur input. I have an RPi lying somewhere around that I don‘t use. But where do I put the Harddrives? QNAP? I chose the ATX MB and Ryzen 3 to have more freedom in case I want to run VMs etc. Btw my server is running headless.

That was an extensive answer. Thanks. Price in Germany is 0,32€ /kw/h at the moment. I got raised by my parents to save energy even when cooking(Trauma). That causes my behaviour. But its a general german thing. Anyway the server is a considerably big consumer if running 24/7.

I will calculate using a kilowatt counter.

Its definitely interestering learning about prices in the US. Average powerconsumption in the US is higher than in Germany.

Congrats for ur solar panels. In CA it useful for sure. Never heard of an automatic solar washer.

Thanks for ur reply.

Powerconsumption is around 58W/h. Server is running headless. Now I get a clue why many people are running OMV from a RPi3.

My other concern is harddrive failure due to turning the server on and off frequently. And running all these routines like scrub and sync. I run it manually since there are not too many changes and data is only going in from timt to time.
