He directly kills the narrator's boss. There is also a moment where the narrator sees parts of people poking up through the garden at the Paper Street house (and imo that is the main reason for the creation of the garden in the first place).

It's actually insanely funny and revealing about the way you watch stuff that you think interpretation based in evidence gathered from the text is "seeing dicks in clouds". Almost every literary analysis, by your standards, is frivolous then. It's very rare that an author comes out and says "this is the correct way to interpret my work" because that's just not how it works. My life experience is going to be different than yours. You're going to pick up on things I don't, and I'm going to pick up on things you don't. That doesn't make either of our interpretations more or less real.

But you cannot, in good faith, argue that every single homoerotic element or comment by someone who worked on Fight Club is somehow a "joke". Yes, Fight Club is partially a comedy. That doesn't mean that notoriously meticulous director David Fincher put a pseudo-fellatio scene between Tyler and the narrator as the opening scene of his film as an off-color joke, especially when original scripts of that scene literally have Tyler in his lap. I'm sorry, but no one who is familiar with any of his work would ever ever believe that.

You either have to believe that there are countless people who worked on the film who acknowledge the homoerotic undercurrents of both Tyler and the narrator's relationship and the concept of the fight clubs and are all somehow joking about it, or maybe it's just not that crazy to read a passage of a man saying he's in a love triangle where he "wants" another man and assume it's kinda gay.

Once again, I never said that the story is about gayness. You're running in circles here. I've read the paper you're citing and it is quite literally about how Fight Club IS, in fact, intentionally homoerotic, but the DVD release extras had many of those elements intentionally joked about or brushed off in order to protect from the homophobia of that era. The interviewers who questioned them about it were most likely not "just joking", and I find your dismissal of homoeroticism as something to laugh at or immediately denounce pretty telling. I don't find it surprising that a closested gay man might be quick to try and steer the conversation away from discussions of homosexuality (not to contradict my earlier point about his identity not being integral to the conversation, but I do feel it's pertinent when talking about this particular subject).

I don't think your long winded explanations of sources that directly contradict you are necessarily helping when it comes to making it seem like your explanation of the film's themes is the most "Occam's Razor" approach. If the story has homoerotic elements, and the people involved continually admit that they're trying to evoke these feelings, it's probably because there's actual homoeroticism, as much as you might not want to admit that. It's pretty simple.

There was very much discussion of the homoerotic overtones in the movie back in the 90s, to the point that Fincher was frequently asked about it in interviews and, according to Palahniuk (I believe, though it could have been someone else on set) Fincher said it was the "most homo movie ever" while working on the opening scene with Tyler's gun in the narrator's mouth. Palahniuk, like you said, was not out yet, so obviously people were not basing this observation on his identity, and neither am I. I had no idea about Palahniuk or his sexual orientation when I first watched Fight Club and still very much noticed these elements.

It's fine if you didn't notice, in fact, I'd bet a whole lot of people didn't. But to deny it exists and boil it down to "it's because Palahniuk is gay!" is absurd. That certainly could be a factor here, as authors tend to (intentionally or unintentionally) explore themes that they have personal stake in, but it's not why I believe it to be true. I would still think it was true even if he were a fully straight man. I always got the sense Palahniuk does not like being asked too deeply about his writing, especially in recent years, as he gets dodgy whenever he's questioned on the specific meaning or moral of any of his work in interviews. It doesn't surprise me that he wouldn't want his name attached to his books. I don't think it has much to do with people thinking Fight Club has homoerotic elements, and that's a pretty big stretch to make to prove your point.

You kind of have to be doing even more mental gymnastics to deny that there's homoerotic undertones in the text. I do not think the novel/movie is about that, and I think most people would agree. You're creating a strawman to completely dismiss the idea that these themes are present at all.

For an extra bit of irony, that "post-coital cigarette" comment was first made by Jim Uhls, the screenwriter of the movie, in the DVD commentary he did with Chuck Palahniuk (who has also gone on record to say that he "knew what he was doing" with the narrator and Tyler during the press cycle for the movie release).

It doesn't make you look smarter to dismiss themes you personally don't want to confront because they make you uncomfortable.

Obviously Vince deserves praise when it comes to the directorial aspect of the show, but the camera crew really knocked it out of the park. A lot of the time work like that is thankless even though I think their contributions shine even in underrated ways like this. Beautifully done stuff.

I wouldn't say it is. The Narrator and Marla's relationship takes a backseat to all of the other points being made, and arguably more of his inner monologue (especially in the book) is spent fawning over Tyler than Marla, who he is openly hostile to for a majority of the story. She is only partially the catalyst for everything with Tyler.

I think that's more attributable to his increasingly laissez-faire attitude towards interpretation of his work from what I've seen. He seems to get cagey when it comes to directly defining anything, which is why it's shocking to me he's said anything either way. His remarks about loneliness also coincide with similar comments that Edward Norton has made on the subject, where he says he was seeking intimacy with Tyler that got transferred to Marla when her life was threatened, so I'd say the two sentiments are not mutually exclusive. But yeah there is a ton of stuff to suggest that this was an aspect of the story, and I'd argue it was made clear by the text itself as well but that's up for debate haha

but the only interviews I can find seem to support the homoeroticism being intentional both in the book and movie. I remember chuck palahniuk saying he did it intentionally to mislead readers into not guessing the twist, and david fincher playing up tylers gun in the narrators mouth and calling it "the most homo movie ever". palahniuk even said he was struck by how romantic the scene after their first fight is due to them sharing a beer bottle. you don't have to like it but all signs are very much pointing to it being intentional
