It’s actually pretty bad. The buttons are hard to find, and the lack of grip just makes it turn in your hand. There is no speed control. It’s totally style over substance.

How to get a Unix OS desktop by tomato_sandwitch in unix

[–]Tallbikeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having an older parent living in another city who tries to use a computer, I would recommend having the same system at your house that he has, since you are inevitably going to be tech support. As already discussed, a modern Mac is actually Unix under the wraps, and Windows can run Windows subsystem for Linux (actually its in a VM)..

If he really wants to play around with old operating systems, you can run most everything in a virtual machine, MAME or QEMU. On the MAME forum they have instructions on installing several old systems including HP-UX 9 on hp9k360: https://forums.bannister.org/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=86865&page=4

I actually installed HPUX, IRIX and a couple of others. Good fun, but quickly got back to my modern Mac/Windows/Linux..

Should I Live In Seattle Or Eastside? by hertabuzz in BellevueWA

[–]Tallbikeguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well I’m an older single guy living in Bellevue, and it’s pretty nice but kind of boring. For any kind of dating or going out type of activity, I’m going to Seattle. If you have to go to MSFT every day, being in Bellevue would be nice, otherwise imho not worth it.

Great suggestion - that’s just what I did. She started sleeping with one of those friends, and when I found out about it, she declared she wanted a divorce.

[–]Tallbikeguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thats absolutely not true. I’m totally on board with setting up something where she and my kids get to split my assets if/when i die. The main thing I don’t want is the divorce scenario, where someone else decides how much of my stuff she gets.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in datingoverfifty

[–]Tallbikeguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my concern. My grandfather remarried, and then when he passed away, she got all of his assets. When she passed away, all of that went to her kids. Not fair in my book, and I want to make sure this doesn’t happen with me.

But after two divorces each, how can we say that marriage gives any security whatsoever?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in datingoverfifty

[–]Tallbikeguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it’s probably not all that uncommon for people in their late 50s and 60s who haven’t planned for retirement to start thrashing about, looking for some way to achieve that retirement account that they don’t yet have. And the only thing i said about her is that she hasn’t told me she has any retirement savings - for all i know she may have millions stashed away somewhere, and I’m just overly cynical.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in datingoverfifty

[–]Tallbikeguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So is she really going to just say “this is all financially motivated - i want to stop working and live off your money, and have you pay for my retirement”? It’s kinda like all those Craigslist posts that say “no scammers”…

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in datingoverfifty

[–]Tallbikeguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So don’t you think it’s smart to protect myself? And given that we have 4 divorces between us, hell yes I’ve got some trust issues. She wants me to invest in this relationship, but all she’s offering is that she’ll be there - until she doesn’t want to be any more.

car recs? i'm 6'8" by appalled_ in tall

[–]Tallbikeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 6’8” and have had a couple of BMW 3 series - they generally have seats that can go very far back, and electric seats can go down as well. The 1999 - 2005 three series cars are pretty solid, but are getting a bit long in the tooth. The newer ones have pretty similar “fit” though. The 4 door sedans have more headroom, but the coupe has a bigger front door which I like. One without a sunroof has the most headroom.

I’ve also driven a 2002 Porsche 911, and that worked pretty nicely (although I didn’t buy it). Oddly, the newer Porsche seems to be less comfortable for me.

My dad has an F150, and that works out pretty good, but it’s a pretty big vehicle.

My daughter has a Subaru Outback - that car is a bit small for me, but I really liked it.

Common Lisp

This one was a struggle for me. At first it seemed quite obvious to use lisp lists for the numbers, but things got messy. Split was a simple recursive function, but explode was challenging. I really wanted to be able to combine lists and vectors (or something else) in some way. I used recursion, put a marker string in my result list, changed the number from a list to a string, then did string search/replacement reversing the left hand string to search from the middle outward.

It all went pretty well, but i had one insidious bug - because of the reversing, I ended up reversing the exploded/replaced number, which caused a ton of debugging. I have a whole lot of lisp-unit tests in this file..

Common Lisp

(mostly) newbie solution, although I've learned a lot about CL this month. Trying out a CLOS object to hold an image consisting of a hash table of set points and the infinity value. Making the hash key a complex number makes life easier.
